09/01/2024 Quarry, IA. Not quite a month after a loaded coal train derailed here and still wreckage at the site. The crossover tracks have been repaired but it looked like the signals were still inoperative at this time. Caught a West bound Z train through the area along with a West bound light power move!

Crossovers are Extremely Important on the Railroad and keeps things moving very efficiently. 🤔👍🙏

At around 430 you talked about using a combine. Back when I lived on my family farm, we hand picked the outside 6 rows of corn and hand chopped the stalks to load on wagons. One wagon for the stalks, one for the ears of corn. The stalks were ground up with a stationery chopper that shot the contents on the ground for cattle feed. The ears were tossed into the corn bins. The reason to OPEN the field is to allow the 2 headed corn picker mounted on a Farmall tractor to enter the field without destroying the crop.

Around 940 you mentioned about packing the ballast down. When I was still working maintenance of way the UP was testing a machine that was part of a tie gang that simulated ballast packing by shaking the ground all around the piece of equipment as it traveled down the tracks. That machine was nearly as large as a box car. Just 1 operator typically.

Thank Red for the update. I was wondering if the new crossovers had the movable point frogs. I'm not seeing any switch motors near the frogs though. The UP uses the movable point frog switches on the Sunset Line in southern Arizona, I think that allows them to run at a higher speed through the turnout. There is usually a sign posted at each frog, noting them as movable point frogs for when they are manually switching.

Thank you for taking us back to Quarry, Iowa, Red! It looks like there is still a lot of cleanup work that must be done. That pile of coal is about the same size as it was in your original video of the wreck site. It is gre4at to see that crossovers are in place. Hopefully, the crossovers will be in working order soon. The Big Boy is on its way east. Are we going to see a video of it passing through Montour? (Posted 5 September 2023 at 1800 CDT.)

hope the farmer is overly compensated for the mess and the lack of urgency on clean up. Destroyed corn, use of field, etc., plus any damage to soil. I saw 5 workers hanging out, no equipment running. UP has the resources and heavy equipment making it possible to have area spotless yesterday. I guess UP is lucky I'm not the farmer.

That there is CP A148 East Marshalltown. Are you sure all the signals are dark? It's kinda hard to tell in the video for sure. I doubt that train would be moving that quickly with signals out of service. The signals can and will work without the switches being "online."
