09/09/2022 Hampton, Ia. Got to the Spine Line just in time to catch the ballast train leaving along with the large crane! Seems impressive to me how fast they got this bridge and track section repaired!! On the way home caught a UP detour train in Shellrock, Ia. Cedar Falls, Ia. 09/07/2022 Great to catch this UP detour train at the Cedar Falls Junction. This East bound mixed freight was just coming off the IANR line and on to the CN!

These railroad crews are always amazing how quick they work. Imagine if our highway workers work that fast.
@Max-eh8gk
@Max-eh8gk 2 жыл бұрын
Imagine the bill though. Railroads do it fast because it costs them money every minute a mainline is closed. Its pretty rare for an interstate (equivalent to a mainline) to be fully closed, they do maintenance one side at a time. Also its very rare for an interstate or major highway to have a bridge failure like this. Happens relatively frequently with railroads. They probably find it cheaper to have an acceptable level of failure and greatly lower maintenance costs. It would be nice if they could do highway work that fast at a decent price though.

I always hear about the derailments because everyone wants to complain about them. This is the first time I've ever seen such an in depth view of a derailment sight and repairs being done. I find it quite interesting. Thanks for taking the time to show this part of the industry that many don't get to see. You're the best😊😊!

Excellent follow-up on the derailment and they made good progress. They were very fortunate it did not rain during this time otherwise that would have been a sea of mud. The wrecked cars sitting in the field looks like a small Cemetery and they will have an outside contractor come in and cut them up. While some cars didn't look that bad their age and remaining years of service are not worth the cost of fixing. On the ballast train the first group of cars look like they had fresh UP stencils but note the balance of them had SI reporting marks for the long gone Spokane International which UP. acquired in 1959. With all the abandonments and downgrading of Rail lines in Iowa they were very fortunate to have a detour out close by. Another Factor on detours is the pilot crew for the line that is taking your train. On the 1st detour the car behind the SP boxcar was one of those old CLSX age waiver cars! Thanks much for walking down to the IANR. CN. JCT for the detour train to help make the story complete. Looking forward to the next installment

Thanks Paul B! I was thinking the same thing on the weather. They had sunny dry weather long enough to get the line back up. If the old M&STL were still there the UP would have had a very close detour. The UP may start looking really close at some of these bridges. Many of them are a century old.

It's amazing how fast they have that rail up and going. Just the amount of rock they have hauled in is amazing...I've worked for an owner of a short line RR and he said when there's a derailment "just get the checkbook out"! Lol

Saw your other video on this derailment, and looked it up. Apparently, back in 2015, UP put out that they were doing a several hundred million dollar revamp and modernization of the Spine Line. While the bridge in this video looks like what one would expect to see when you think 7 year old bridge; that one in the original video looked like what was probably there since the days the first rail was laid on this line. Wouldn't surprise me if the start of the derailment was bridge failure.

Cedar Falls Jct. 16:21 - 16:49 " . . . I figured they might be using this old Rock Island line . . . so that's a pretty good 'catch' right here! . . . Yeah, that's a rare 'catch,' a Union Pacific detour train right here." GREAT 'catch,' Red. Congrats and Thank You. An aside: Imagine if this track had been pulled for a rails-to-trails project, where would THAT leave UP? "Up the creek?' Or, UP and other lines at all sorts of diverse, heavily traveled locations where infrastructure and rights-of-way become lost / destroyed / sold? Finally, concluding observation, a note to Rod: "No need to sweat missing your drone, as you advised your KZbin audience, as what you've captured here from ground level is fine and breathtaking as is." Continued "Thanks" and "Good Luck" sentiments to the UP repair crews as well as detour crews. It's amazing how far this seemingly insurmountable task has progressed in a handful of days!

Nice video work especially with your drone! Unbelievable how fast they can get some of these derailments cleared and operating again. If I was the land owner I'd have them leave a couple of the boxcar's for storage of all my new wood stockpiles!! Unfortunately most freight must be destroyed to get settlements on the insurance. Red you sound like me every time I see an old C&NW car go by as part of a consist especially being in the CSX & NS area of the country now, but I grew up not far from Proviso and my dad took the C&NW commuter to and from work downtown!

A few notes. The covered ballast cars are 'wreckers', kept in reserve for all weather repairs. Next, in situations like that, once all lading has been removed, the cars are scrapped (note later in the video that the contractors were bringing in scrap containers) Two whistle signals mean going ahead. Last, most of the former CNW 4650 cuft cars were returned to the leasing companies.

First of all I would like to say that the video (together with the last one) was a real treat to watch. As for this video I'm really surprised to watch how far they have come in terms of making track repairs, removal of wrecked railcars and the new bridgespan construction (I actually thought that the rail line would be closed for one month or more due to the destroyed bridge), but I guess it is just a matter of pouring enough manpower and money into it in order to get the rail line up and running again fast.
