As someone detransitioning (MtF), when I was 16 I was absolutely given HRT without proper "informed consent" from doctors. They literally just asked if I was "aware of the risks" and then send you off. After just saying yes without any further confirmation, I was impressed at the time but now older knowing better, I'm disgusted it was so easy.

I've always felt the problem is _identifying whether_ a kid is trans. When they reach a certain level of emotional maturity, preferably around at least 14-16, minimum, then I feel we can start operating with more certainty that a diagnosis _may be_ correct. I just don't trust any child to be emotionally/intellectually sophisticated enough to accurately relay these complex notions of "self" accurately to a therapist- or to anyone. I say let the kid grow and mature and experience the world and find the language skills so we can trust that a diagnosis is accurate before giving them any kind of drugs. Childrens' minds are mercurial and susceptible to influence. I feel this means we need to be extremely hands off until they reach a certain age.

Gender-affirming care isn't automatically hormones or surgery. It can include that, but, specifically for children, usually involves them talking to a doctor/therapist about their gender identity, being able to use their preferred name/pronouns in particular spaces such as at school and at the doctors, and also receiving governmental protection if their parents abuse them, neglect them, or disown them for being trans. Things that I think children should receive regardless of being trans or not.

Even as an adult "questioning" their gender is not enough to warrant mutilating yourself to TRY to become something that genetically science has proven that you never can be. You as every gene and particle of DNA in your body will always be what it was born as. You cant change that. Its objectively more healthy (mentally and physically) to just learn to live with it through counceling and mental healthcare rather than mutilating yourself. Which, by the way MOST patients that undergo those surgeries have to have MULTIPLE corrections done and a lot of them die or are even more horrendously disfigured from massive infections that they dont warn you about because it effects their profits. I’m all for children and adolescents getting the therapy and care that they need if they’re struggling with their identity… However, I just cannot wrap my head around WHY a loud minority thinks that it’s morally okay to tell kids that they’re transgender when they’re not even old enough to properly wrap their head around that concept. Kids should be learning how to do a variety of other important life skills and figuring out who they are as a person before deciding if they’re the opposite sex. It absolutely does happen where parents are irresponsible and think “oh my son likes playing with dolls and wears dresses… he must want to be a girl!” When I was a child I preferred playing with boys, hated dresses/skirts, owned Hot Wheels, watched “boy” cartoons, etc. My mother never told me I was a boy. I was considered a tomboy. Now, I’m not saying ALL cases are like that. Kids can very much grow up and realize they do identity as trans. But that’s something for them to decide on when they’re an ADULT. Allowing CHILDREN to take hormones/testosterone and puberty blockers can cause irreversible damage to their bodies. Let them mature and grow up first, get them proper counseling and therapy, and for the love of God… Leave it to the PARENTS to have those discussions with their kid. That shit shouldn’t be taught in schools because it is not up to teachers to discuss those heavy topics with children other than the parents.

Honestly, giving drugs to kids is NOT the way to go about it. If they believe they might be trans or going through a different gender/sexuality experimentation, then talking to a doctor or therapist would be the absolute best way to go through things. Well thats the issue. Scientist and social researchers and gender researchers previously came to the conclusion that its actually better to not transition as a minor. Its only now that major reports are coming out saying the opposite. So we followed the science and it lead to 8byears of children transitioning and there is no current way to reverse that. I feel like the biggest problem with this whole "If you don't transition as a minor then you will be ugly." Its so sad that people think HRT is like some magical thing that will make your dreams of being a woman a total and complete reality. We are in the infancy of finding the best way to transition MtF and FtM. While the medicine, techniques and technology will improve over time. You are at a time and place where its not so simple. You HAVE to be willing to put in effort on your part to make yourself look good. You cannot expect doctors to fully take on that role. They are trying to get you at the starting point.
