Wether its solo trips, group rides with the boys, or family trips in the mountains, UTV's provide a freedom and excitement that is hard to find anywhere else. There are however a few things we wish we knew before we bought. In this video, Dave shares a few things about owning a UTV that he wishes he knew before he took the leap!

I deliver bulk oil for a living. There are only 6/7 major oil companies and they make all the other brands. Harley davidson oil is mobil oil. Lube tech makes polaris oil and mobil makes lube tech. Just a few examples. There are 1000 of brands of oil. But remember all standard oils are the same no matter the brand, because they must follow the Standard oil regulations.

Especially for a first machine, buying a (good) used machine with accessories like windshield, roof, winch, bumpers etc is a way to save some of the entry expenses and figure out exactly what you want to move into in the future.

All good points . The only thing I would add is that you need to know how to drive them and understanding what snaps belts and how to take care of your belt . I owned a side by side for 6 months and it’s been a bumpy ride,From Axle boots coming off, belts ripping, tires but with the satisfaction of climbing mountains to crossing rivers and whipping turns and hearing your turbo choo - choo !!!

My family recently bought a used 2011 Polaris Ranger Crew 800. It came with a fold-out windshield, top, winch, snow plow, brand new tires all for about 8K. It's been maintained flawlessly and runs perfectly.. It's great for taking the kids around our 40 acre farm, snow plowing, hauling cut down invasive trees & so much more. I do all the maintenance and repairs so I don't have to worry about shops. This is the way to go if you want to get into a UTV/ Side by side and not spend 20 to 50k.

I got lucky. Knew I wanted side by side - was retiring from 4 wheelers, too old and to many people depending on me - can’t get hurt. Went in to dealership thinking I needed some 50 inch trial machine, and wanted to spend $15k or so. Dealer showed me my Maverick Sport XXC, and I couldn’t be happier( yes spent $5k more than planned). Wow the capabilities, the ruggedness, the fun!! Still a noob - but been a little over a year, I still feel like a kid at Christmas every time I am going out for a ride. May not be for everyone - but it has brought me on adventures I could have never imagined and brought me closer to my 9 year old son. PS the frequent stops to just check stuff out along the way for the kids- GREAT advice!

I was told by friends who sold their’s not to buy one, but I did in 2015. So in brief I dropped $17,500 (additional $3500 for my trailer) to get started and a LOT of time just maintaining as recommended and installing mods. When I stop and add up the of money & time I come to the conclusion I’m glad I’m not in a lot deeper. Every trail is hours away for me and now only drive in a few time a year, so think long & hard on how many other things you could have spent the money on to have a good time.

In my state some people are using them for cars. Cheaper than a jeep to buy and insure. They are allowed on our streets and highways but not on the interstates

Agree that maintenance and checking SxS all the time is a needed very frequently. But I am pretty sure, if we use our trucks same way like we use SxS we will need to do that too. We push those things to the limit . :)

This is a great video having answered a lot of my doubts about buying a UTV. Where I live the dealerships suck . They will sell with a smile and steer you towards all the accessories in the world. For maintenance be prepared to wait for awhile even if purchased from them. Only service what they sell. When in Wisconsin I go to a boat dealership which Sells boats and UTV with a great sales,parts and service center. Great place I would definitely trust but being 400 miles from home is not feasible. I haven’t bought a machine because of what you describe as ownership obligations. Thanks for your honest talk.👍

You're not kidding about the accessories. Bought a 21 rzr Turbo S and already spent over 3 grand and haven't even got it out in the dirt yet. New set of paddle tires on beadlock rims were the most expensive, around 2 grand. Put some 5150 6ft whips that ran $450. Rock sliders over $300 and polaris storage box for the bed almost $300. 32" light bar was the cheapest thing around $150. I think I'm ready for my Glamis trip in a few weeks finally!

This is a great video! Many years ago I used to ride dirt bikes all the time but it has been quite a while. I just bought my first SxS after a year or so mulling it over (2024 Rzr XP 1000). Watching this list just now for the first time made me smile because all of those (with one exception) were exactly what I considered before I made the jump. The one about the dealership ..... great advice! I did not think of that one. Fortunately I am very happy with the dealership I used so maybe I got lucky on that last point ;)

Good points….. I have been riding for years both quads and UTV I currently have a Yamaha Viking because I needed the 3 seats and a dump bed. The only advice I would give is if you have access to a machine to test drive with your wife and or kids especially if they don’t have experience with riding as they may not enjoy it as much as you do. Most dealers in my area do not have demo machines so sometimes you won’t be able to drive the machine you buy until you own it.

Here is another tip. Storage. Where are you going to store your UTV so you can easily access it for riding without having to unbury it or moving several vehicles around. Thieves like to steal them, is your storage area secure? Are you now parking a vehicle on the street so your UTV is in the garage? If you do park your UTV outside, is it covered?

if you don't have garage space just buy an enclosed trailer. A used enclosed trailer is usually less than 5K. It's an expense but at least you can lock it up indoors.

I bought a Honda Pioneer 500 for many reasons but, mostly because it fits through the 60" wide doorway of my 12'x16' shed. It also only cleared the top of that opening by 1". The short 2"x8" wood ramps to get it in with came with the shed and work fine. It also fits nicely on my 5'x10' tilt bed trail that I use for another vehicle. The other vehicle is a 1948 Harley Servi-Car and was very difficult to load so I put a winch on the trailer for loading and this makes it so much safer and easier to load. Strap tie-downs were a problem, they kept coming loose so, I put the Erickson tie-down straps on the trailer, and these work great. I still add two straps on the back because the law requires 4 tie-down points. Hauling has also been an issue with too much weight in the back end of the trailer so I've added ammo cans for tools and tent pins and gear to the front of the trailer on each side of the winch for a better-blanced load.

Good point David. Bought a UTV in February and did the musical machine thing in my 2-bay garage for a couple months. Now that the snow and ice are gone, I’m parking my car outside. Much harder to steal that. But 10’x16’ shed is on order.

Back in June I bought the Polaris RZR XP4 for the fam.. I live in Michigan and where we go camping there's a lot of good trails so me and the wife decided to get a toy to enjoy with the fam. So far the brake switch went out and the passenger side has a noise can't figure out wheres coming from hopefully it's nothing super expensive. I will be getting it checked this Winter. Hoping to have many good rides out of it without costly maintenance.

One of your best if not the best video you guys ever put out. Just straight up truths and facts. I did the SXS thing for about 15 years. (Rhino and YXZ) I still love them and the performance was unreal! However the hassle of owning one started to outweigh its fun. I since switched to a new 2DR Rubicon and I’m in love! My wife and teenage daughters actually ask me when we are going to take a Jeep ride. They want to stay clean, cool, dry or warm. We live in north Phoenix and pack a lunch box and hit the trail! Sooooooo easy! Drive the Jeep as a daily also…you get a lot of bang for your buck. This is just my opinion…SXS’s are still great but I’ve moved on…

Dave, great video. I am in the market for a SXS, I’m not looking for speed, I’m more interested in comfort. I’ll be riding mostly on Sand Mountain. ( I can see it from my window) The Kawasaki KRX 1000 4es is one I looked at recently at Rocky Mountain ATV. You opened my eyes to the amount of maintenance, the need for insurance, and to look for a good dealership. I hope I have found one with Rocky Mountain ATV in St. George.

I Financed my X3 through Can-Am and they don't require insurance. They recommend it but you don't have to. I have mine over insured, with extra coverage for injury as well. This can get dangerous and I'm not taking any chances.

The service dept. is a HUGE thing. I only buy from one dealer and one dealer only. We have Honda dealers that are 20-30 min away from my house and they’re good for parts like oil or coolant but if I have to take anything back to get worked on I’m going to make that 4 hour drive and waste an extra 100 bucks In gas just to not have to deal with the hassle

Some good points for ppl to look into. This is very spicific to the type of sxs you bought though. Of course an inclosed sxs is going to be hot without a/c on a hot day. If you work with them and have a polaris Ranger etc. there are litterally none of these issues. I definitly agree with choosing the right dealer though.

Nice video I bought CanAm trail glass widow not plastic with there so called magic coating. Wish it flipped up like plastic one. I'm still doing research (watching youtube videos) and really feeling the SXS category out. At first glance it looks like fun. Then I saw the price tag of these machines. And I'm not a grease monkey, which I think you would need to be...at the least, develop at least a rudimentary knowledge of to be safe (and save money). Getting over that hump....then I saw a video about washing a SXS.....jesus....and after that hump.....then there are the accessories.....talk about getting bent over (a few of which should be included in the base model (decent seatbelts, roof)-not to mention the time and energy to install them. And then there is the trailer you need to buy. And on top of all that-how much am I going to use it? That's an open question. But whatever it is, is it ultimately enough to justify the cost? And, in my video research I came across all the things you need to do to an X3 right after you buy it.....so that it won't break! Sounded like a couple thousand dollars worth of parts and labor. That was enough to make me not want an X3.....so the research continues....still on the fence.

Do the research & test drive before buying. If you’re rock climbing or going up steep trails, get a full crash/roll cage. Easy to damage a machine with small roll.

Nice video but today’s machines don’t require much mataince , most belt changes are 4-5k on today’s machines . Today’s machines have motors in bk so little heat in cab . Great points . Take breaks get out take breaks . Man biggest thing I tell people go rent one or two it helps . Nice video

I couldn't find it in a comment so I'm going to say it incase anyone didn't know. Your oil change on any SXS is NOT measured buy miles. It's is measured by time. Your break in period is 10 HRs. Drive soft to break your belt in unless you get a Yamaha YXZ1000 or Honda Talon/Pioneer. After the break in period, its every 20-25 HRs. Of course each vehicle is slightly different like the Kawasaki Teryx 800 which says your break in is 20 HRs and every oil change is 20 HRs. Always read your owners manual when you purchase. Also, depending on the terrain you want to be driving in and rather or not you want wide open playgrounds or trail riding, that helps extremely on which SXS to look at. If anyone has any questions, more in-depth or something you would ask someone in person, please feel free to reply. I'd be more than happy to help.

@@yamahaSHO So thats not exactly a bad thing. SXS's like Polaris have a little "wrench" Icon that pops up on your dash telling you your car is due for a oil change based on hours. some cars it is easier to just do by miles but a universal signal for your oil change is by the hour.

After you're out of your warranty period, no need to put specific brand oil in your ride! Make sure all of the designated requirements on the back of your container match the ones called out on the brand oil that the manufacturer of your machine recommends!

You don’t need the manufactures oil but you need high grade oil formulated for UTVs. Your truck isn’t seeing the same conditions as your small high strung turbo utv engine. It’s like small engines. They need small engine oil with zink

I get my oil from O'reilly's for my Turbo. RZR and a complete oil change cost me around $40. You absolutely do not have to buy brand specific oil. They target the people that don't know jack about engines for that. Any guy that knows his way around his toolbox and how oil works knows what's up. If you don't know, it doesn't take much to learn, you will save yourself thousands.

This is why I’m going cfmoto zforce. I’m in Australia so we are VERRRYYYY limited on where we can go. Pretty much private property or a 4wd park. It’s basically just bush bashing. Sure might have some Rocky hill climbs. A creek crossing and some fast flowing trails. But there’s no point getting the most expensive machine. At least with the cfmoto, they come with a winch and roof and are a half decent machine for just having fun. Plus they are only $22000 ride away where the others start at $29990 that don’t have a winch or roof.

The point is that they don't have to be that way. We spend $20k-$40k on a sxs and the manufacturers won't even seal up the holes in the floor. When you can look down through the shift gate and see the ground that's just stupid. Doors with 1" gaps on all sides is crap as well. If they're going to make doors than don't half ass the doors. And no, many people do not know what they're getting into when they but a sxs when it comes to heat and dust. If we're truly buying an atv with a steering wheel than the price should reflect that.

Me personally I came from dirt bikes and quads so the sound of the engine the heat and dust I love every second of it and there's no way I could drive hard and listen to music I feel I need to be able to hear what the machine is doing they are definitely expensive and people need to think about where they can ride the machine I always see them for sale with low miles and they live in a sub division it's takes about a year for them to realize they don't actually use the thing those are the ones to buy lol .

You haven’t off roadbed much if you think it should be clean and comfortable. I Jeeped and I don’t care how tight you make it, mud gets in. The idea of the lose gaps and holes is to not hold the mud and water in. Look at desert race vehicles or any off-road race vehicle for that matter. If you want to be clean and comfortable, buy an suv and spend your weekend waxing it.

cool video FINALLY somebody addresses the issues of utvs there are so many, one of the things that annoy me the most is that in pretty much ANY youtube review video they only have good things to say, or if they say something negative its just something stupid like handling or ergonomics when what they really should address as much or more than anything is longevity, how tough is it, how long will it go with out problems and then the common problems they do have on different models, how much to fix them, and how they can be avoided!

I love the idea of a side by side but every time I really think about it, it just doesn’t make sense for me. I love off-roading and overlanding. I have 60+ million acres of Colorado and Utah (not to mention New Mexico and Arizona) to explore. But I like to primitive camp far away from people deep down off-road trails. My 4Runner takes me everywhere I want to go and I simply cannot figure out how to include a side by side into those expeditions. Logistically, it’s impossible for me to pull a trailer to where I want to camp and the last thing I want to do is pull up to some off highway trailer pullout and socialize with a bunch of other people. How would I get the side by side and my main vehicle to camp? What to do with the trailer? I think they look fun as can be I just simply can’t figure out how to use one when you’re a reclusive off-roader who enjoys camping in places most can’t get to.

I work in a dealership and want to give my 2 cents about warranty work. The problem is the manufacturer has flat rate times for all repairs, and most of the times are way to short. When we go over in time we don't get paid for it. If we get compensated for our time we are more than happy to do whatever you want.

As consumers we aren't concerned with what the dealer makes from the manufacturer and we shouldn't have to be concerned about that and we shouldn't be punished or left holding the bag when the dealership feels shorted by the manufacturer. We're sold a machine with a warranty and we just want our machines fixed when there's an issue. -Dave

I agree with what Dave or Garrett said! Part of picking a dealer is picking one who’s willing to go the extra mile if/when necessary. However, Manufacturers need to fairly and accurately estimate and pay out on hours. -Joe

I work for a freightliner dealer, yeah you can get shafted on warranty times but at the end of the day it is your job to repair the machine under the warranty the brand offers you it may suck but that’s part of the job, learn the brand find ways to be faster and make time and do the job right, in the end a happy customer will come back once warranty has ran out and start paying out of pocket

People i need your input on aftermarket seats/roll cage in the back bucket for extra seats. Are they worth doing so I don't have to buy a 6 seater by they are more expensive and so long for the garage

If you get the unlimited the rear seat makes into a bed if needed. If you change it out you lose it. Also I have never like the seats in the bed with a cage extended, they just don’t seem safe to me. -Garrett

What would you recommend for a solo adventure rider. Getting too old for heavy adventure bikes motorcycles, specially on technical trails, and the smaller ones, limit gear capacity, and comfort. Looking for alternatives. Need long range and power, not necessarily very high speed. Good suspension, good on gravel at reasonable speed, good on tarmac, not highways, say 50-70mph.. Good on snow, good water crossing capabilities. Street legal. I like to ride cross country trails. ,

Went to get insurance for liability (cover the other guy if I'm at fault) and comprehensive (fire theft vandalism) for a 2005 Yamaha Kodiak 450 and a 2016 Yamaha Wolverine and my insurance company said they only insure up to 500 cc. So the Wolvie is not coverable at 700 cc. And by the way there was sweet shag all warranty on either machine.
