Join us as we take a walk through Derby City Centre. Like many cities in the UK that sit outside of the major cities, Derby has come under a lot of scrutiny for being neglected by it's council and just generally run down. This video is not to split opinions, but just to give a very real view of Derby City Centre in 2024. We take a 16 minute circular route in and around the city centre. No fancy business, no editing. Just Derby as it is now.

Derby is a city and unitary authority area on the River Derwent in Derbyshire, England. The county is named after Derby, which was its original county town. As a unitary authority, Derby is administratively independent from Derbyshire County Council. The population of Derby is 261,136 (2021).
The Romans established the town of Derventio, which was later captured by the Anglo-Saxons and then by the Vikings who made Djúra-bý one of the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw. Initially a market town, Derby grew rapidly in the industrial era and was home to Lombe's Mill, an early British factory, Derby contains the southern part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. With the arrival of the railways in the 19th century, Derby became a centre of the British rail industry. Despite having a cathedral since 1927, Derby did not gain city status until 1977.
Derby is a centre for advanced transport manufacturing. It is home to engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce and Alstom (formerly Bombardier Transportation) has a production facility at the Derby Litchurch Lane Works; Toyota's UK headquarters is located in the south-west of the city at Burnaston.

I was born in Derby eighty seven years ago. Although I recognized St Peter's Street and East Street, they looked a little strange without cars on the roadway. I left to join up in 1953 and have only visited on occasion since. I was very unhappy when the council in the fifties decided to " modernize" by destroying what was the "west end." Gone is St Alkmunds Church Yard along with the buildings surrounding it, sad. There are many examples of short-sighted planning. Thank you for jogging this aging brain.

Last time I visited Derby was early 90's it was far busier than that, and where have all the decent shops gone, I can't see one worth visiting. Ironic that the girl is telling passers-by that buying lots of stuff doesn't make you happy, she's in the wrong place.

The fact that the city centre is dead most of the year says it all really. The council are utterly useless and have no idea. The town is disgusting. Anti-social behaviour, drunks, homeless and sod all to do.

I can't argue with that to be fair. I used to enjoy going in to town around 10+ years ago even just to kill some time at the weekends, but it really seems to have got worse on every visit over the last few years. A lot of people blame it on the Derbion (formely Westfield, Intu), but It's no better in there, either.

The Derbion, Intu, Westfield has not been a positive improvement my last visit 2022 I was disappointed, the whole area is soulless and intimidating and the bus station is even worse. I grew up in Chaddesden , the centre of Derby then was Sadler Gate the Marketplace and the Locarno at 3:45 now the 'House of Holes' I spent my last ten quid and moved to Sydney in the 70s with occasional visits to Derby over the years still love the Dolphin Pub and the Brunswick Inn on Railway Terrace I was a regular at the Bell Hotel in Sadler Gate back in the day. Anyway thanks for the video.

@@Tolpuddle581 Thank you for your comment and watching the video! It's great to see our videos are finding people so far away. It was part of the idea of doing them, knowing a lot of people will have moved away from the area and curious to see what it's like now. Derby seems to have changed and changed quite rapidly. I'm noticing big differences and not always for the better with every 5 years that passes now. We currently live very close to Chaddesden, on the Wilmorton estate, Pride Park. I know Chaddesden very well. I think the City Centre is where you notice the biggest differences when it comes to whether a city is starting to feel run down and I must say, the city centre does at the moment. @@DerbyRambles No problem I grew up on Rupert Road in Chadd I went to Olive Eden School on Morley Road. The thing I found disturbing in Derby was obvious drug dealing in the old Market Hall and aggressive beggars on St Peters St but that's not just a Derby problem.
