I watched this on the tv when I was 8. As a Rams fan I was so excited and proud.

I was there! What legendary players on both sides. As a Rams fan I was mesmerised by Hinton's brilliance but my abiding memory was of the great Bobby Charlton. He took football s seriously that he was as upset at the final whistle as if West Germany had won in '66. The conummate professional! This was a game between 22 real men!

It’s nice to see that both teams and sets of supporters took this competition seriously, it would not happen now.⚽️

Great to see this footage. Recently bought a signed photo of Dave Mckay bringing the cup out of the tunnel, only time I have seen anything of this match. Did not start infants school until Sept.'70 so a bit before my time. Lol.

When you think of players like Todd, Nish, Macdonald, Shilton and possibly Ball who McGuinness had ready to sign for Utd and were vetoed by Busby - BUSBY - and the Board, it's so sad - both for the club and for the effect it had on poor George Best's career.

@oleggorky906 3 жыл бұрын
I was born in 1968 and so was obviously too young at the time to follow the game. But as I grew up in the late seventies and early eighties I did hear just a few brave souls suggest that Sir Matt had undermined McGuiness. Perhaps what you said regarding the signings is what they were referring to. A retired manager can be a hindrance. Liverpool had to be harsh with Shankley when he was hanging around Melwood as well. Maybe they just can't learn to give it over and delegate. After the European Cup there was nowhere for him to go; Busby was emotionally spent. Even Clough at the end was a wreck. But we remember them for their primes, not the frailty that age brings.

@@oleggorky906 Hi, thanks for the reply, I'm afraid that the truth was that Busby didn't want anyone equalling him or even overshadowing him in the future (like Paisley would later do to Shankly at Liverpool). Look at the great players who United lost, and the mediocre and/or aging players poor Wilf was left with - same with Frank O'Farrell after him. Busby, even though it wasn't his money of course, was always extremely reluctant to give wage rises as well, players from other clubs were astonished when they learnt United's pay figures. And if you stood up to him, you were out, as John Giles found out after winning an FA Cup winning medal with Utd in 1963. He has said, he disagreed with Busby, stood up to him, and within days was out. What a stupid decision by Busby that was! Imagine how George and Giles could have worked together in the years ahead.

@@michaelfenton3923 Yes, and they'd have won much more (and Leeds probably much less) with Giles in the team. Of course he was a winger with United, it was Revie who turned him into one of the greatest midfield players ever.

Hard to believe a competition that not all sides were involved in, could generate a big crowd like this. The 1970s were not good for Manchester United, only 1 trophy won and a relegation.

It was basically a number pre-season friendlies. So they created this cup, invited some teams high & low & hey presto. Some of the matches were live but quality was mediocre as no one wanted injuries before the season kicked off in earnest. Included some teams from Scotland, so Watneys was quite appropriated for the Jocks & a certain George Best. Hic.

@@roderickscott7429 Yeah, and there was also the Texaco Cup, which in England had four regional qualifying groups (a bit like the World Cup), then Scottish teams joined in at the quarter-final stage. My own team, Oldham Athletic, won their group in 1974, then went on to beat Hearts (over two legs) and lost to Southampton in the semi-final.

Derby...worthy winners, much better passing and possession. The genius that was the mighty Brian Clough. But I wonder if Alan Hinton ever sprinted up the touchline then hit the bye-line to whip the ball across the face of the goal? Always cutting inside on this performance.

LOL @ Watney Cup. The two highest scoring teams form each division that did NOT get promoted or qualify for Europe. So basically a losers cup. Would never see Leeds or Liverpool in this.

You correctly identified Liverpool and Leeds as two of the giants of the early 70s. However, between 1971 and 1975, Derby were champions twice...Leeds and Liverpool only managed one championship each. Derby were far from losers at that time. There record from 1969 was 4th, 9th, 1st, 7th, 4th and 1st again in 1975.
