This is so much better than the shit we are subjected to today. No diving, no cheating, no surrounding the referee. This is proper football.

It's so nice to be reminded of when the so called ' Beautiful Game' was played with a proper sensible,nicely balanced Leather Ball ( which didn't fly all over the place like in a '5 an side' game) And when hard Tackling& competitive challenges were treated & acknowledged as a skill& integral part of the game!

I agree. The new waffle ball football is hard to take.
@seltaeb96913 ай бұрын
Thanks, it's also the pitch if we can call it that. It's part grass & imitation stuff, that doesn't have mother earth, granules fly about when ball is kicked. The game is now so fast as that ball just zings without any effort. Players don't tackle, defenders just look at the attacker. No midfield action. It's a hybrid game that looks like indoor football. Hate it, don't watch it.

Liverpool, a work in progress leading to a devastating long-lasting team winning trophies into the late 1980s and Derby a fantastic but short-lived team managed by a genius who went on to win two European Cups with an equally short-lived unit.
@infrasleep6 ай бұрын
That's because Shankly decided to dismantle and rebuild liverpool after they lost to a poor Watford side in the FA Cup in 1970-something Paisley did regularly during his time. This was actually revolutionary-Man U, Leeds, Spurs, Chelsea etc etc ALL let their sides age and go to seed (and all were relegated/went into decline) If you look at the Leeds/Man U Spurs sides from the mid 60's to mid 70's they were virtually unchanged. Shankly got rid of a whole winning but aging squad and replaced with new blood. If he'd followed the disasterous trend of the other big clubs,you'd be watching Ian St John ,Roger Hunt and Tommy Lawrence in this match v Derby!!

I was at the match. Just turned up at the stadium and got my ticket there. Jack Withim got a hat trick but injuries later that season curtailed his career. If memory serves he had come from Sheffield Wed for big money 45k. Some great passing skills by both teams under pressure.

Classic Matches, Thanks for this entertaining programme-good game from Anfield with less-famous Liverpool player Jack Whitham with a hat-trick and fine performance matched by good show at the back for Derby by McFarland. Good commentary by Gerald Sinstadt.

Loved Gerald Sinstadt commentating. Him, Brian Moore, Kenneth Wolstenholm, Barry Davies, David Coleman. All in their own way made the games special.

Imo Davies, Sinstadt and Coleman (in that order) were the best commentators. Davies and Sinstadt could read the game and make brilliant incisive and tactical analysis, whilst the game was in progress - probably lost on a lot of viewers. Coleman for his sheer enthusiasm made a dull match seem brilliant.!

Question for the United fans: how long did your yellow and blue away kit last? I can remember United in the 70s wearing white, white and black, white with a red trim but never yellow and blue. However, my memories are from mid 70s onwards, not early 70s.

It's interesting how often the players lose possession with poor passing
@Telcontar19623 ай бұрын
They were as good at passing as any today. I doubt many premier league footballers would be so great on the pitches regularly played on in this era. What you call poor passing is just a different, better approach to football than possession football. This is far more fluid and adventurous and for more entertaing and incident filled than.the dress served up today
@Daniel-deMerrivale2 ай бұрын
@@Telcontar1962 Totally agree. The pitches were part of the fun then, including size and slope as well as condition. You never knew what they were like until you turned up did you? You had to learn how to adapt your play to the pitch on the day and that added a great dimension to thegame.
@Telcontar19622 ай бұрын
@Daniel-deMerrivale a footballer then had to adapt his game from bone dry hard pitches in August, to mud-patches resembling WW1 no man's land in late autumn and spring, to frost-hard concrete slabs with snow drifts in Winter. Today's pitches look virtually the same throughout the year. Add to that the lack of substitutions and the need to play 60 games a year for top teams. Despite the better diet, training and selection of players based on athleticism today, I would be very surprised if today's teams would be able to compete with those of 50/60 years ago. I think by Jan-Feb today's teams would be struggling to avoid relegation, that is fir those who hadn't already quit the game.
@Daniel-deMerrivale2 ай бұрын
@@Telcontar1962 Yes that’s right. I remember playing on lush grass but hard ground at the start of the season, autumn was great because the pitches were still good and were softer, winter frosts the snow 😂 and then, of course, mostly sand!! 😂

@soccer1970-f5fАй бұрын
Its a massive disappointment. You get about a third of the way though it, and you woudl'nt even know it was about 71/72 (even you forgot). You go off on about 50 different tangents. Different leagues, non football stuff, left wing preaching, tedious racism bs, sky (wtf). The whole point of a book about season 1971/72 is to talk about 1971/72. not the seasons before and after, sky and 'cultural enrichment which you clearly love. Wake up to the real world and see who is actually on the end of racial discrimination. Guess it would hurt your brain to go against the msm narrative. Give it a miss folks, there's better out there.
