Every Kentucky Derby winner has to race the next race. The people love Triple Crown horses, which are hard to come by. That's what makes the Kentucky Derby winner so special is hoping that the horse can win the next race and then the final one. Mike Smith said this Derby was the most well rounded Derby he has seen in a long time. Meaning 15 horses all had a shot at winning the race. Leon was brilliant in how he quickly took his horse to the rail, from 20 post. Horses on the outside have to run much farther than the horses on the rail. So Leon chilled on the rail and allowed all the other horses in front to burn themselves out. And then he kicked into gear and timed it perfectly. Kudos to Rich Strike, a horse that was overlooked and too far out.
@aaronnarsavage36402 жыл бұрын
I don’t if by saying “have to race the next race” in reference to running in the Preakness Stakes as meaning you would like to see Derby winners run in the Preakness. It’s the owner’s decision, but it’s certainly not a requirement. It’s happened many times over the years. In fact, it just happened in 2019. Derby winner, Country House, did not run in the Preakness.
@outoftime77402 жыл бұрын
@@aaronnarsavage3640 Then really those horses who won the Kentucky Derby and decide to not race in the Preakness, shouldn't have even participated in the Kentucky Derby then. It's not fair to the horse trying to make history and be a Triple Crown winner. There are no Derby winners racing in the Preakness, only one. Don't know what you are talking about.. All these horses who were good enough 3 year olds, to make the Kentucky Derby ,get ONE chance and ONE chance only, to be a TC Horse. remember
@aaronnarsavage36402 жыл бұрын
@@outoftime7740 “It’s not fair to the horse”??? I can assure you that no horse that has ever run in the Kentucky Derby, let alone won that race, has ever realized the significance of it nor any comprehension of what the Triple Crown is. “Don’t know what you are talking about” What I was talking about is that there is no requirement for a Derby winner to race in the Preakness. I thought I made that clear in my original response. However, the reason why it’s not a requirement and it’s strictly up to the owner of the horse (and not just jubilant fans of the sport), is due to the health of the horse. You see, not all of the horses come out of races exactly in the same condition physically. Often, their recovery time varies…..this is the reason why you won’t see many of the Derby participants (who didn’t win) NOT running in the Preakness, but you may see them 5 weeks later in the Belmont….because their owners understand that the health of their horse is of paramount importance….especially when it comes to their investment and future breeding concerns.
@outoftime77402 жыл бұрын
@@aaronnarsavage3640 Why race in the Preakness now, if their horses lost in the Derby. There is no sense in that and no purpose. Only Rich Strike has a purpose in that race. Even the Belmont is no use to the Derby losers. These next two races will be filled with horses that were deemed notworthy of the Kentucky Derby.. its all about the Triple Crown, thats why they do this every year. Winning the Triple Crown in horse racing is the ultimate goal and everyone's wish in horse racing. That's why there has only been 13 horses to accomplish such an incredible feat. since 1875. Everyone that watched the Kentucky Derby was already asking themselves, "is this the year we have a Triple Crown winner and every year we get our hopes sunk again and again. Looking for another Secretariat, which wont ever happen, we are all just hoping for a miracle. The owners of RichStrike are happy with the Derby. I'm sure they don't see anything further with their horse.

Such an amazing story, and so humble! It's awesome to see a hard working man that never really dreamed of being where he is today talk about yes we won the Derby, but I'll keep taking care of my horse like I have from day 1 . If you watch how Sonny squeezed Strike in between 2 horses going into the last turn (to me anyway) I saw the bond between horse & rider in that moment. Strike commanded his space on the track and opened up in the straight away like he knew he was chasing greatness. That is a well trained horse that loves to run! This has to be my favorite derby in my lifetime and I believe Mr. Reed will absolutely think of his horse first and not the stakes of the triple crown. At the end of the day, this is what happens when you take a good horse, train him with good riders, and let the horse be the horse.

I don’t understand why you are underestimating Rich Strike’s potential to win the Preakness Stakes; if there’s a smaller field that would give him a better chance of winning regardless of the tight turns. I think that there will be a smaller field perhaps half the size of the Kentucky Derby because most of the Derby contender’s’ trainers will want to give them a rest because they’ve been training very hard for the Kentucky Derby.

If your horse cant handle to race 3 races, back to back to back, in his entire career, and as a 3 year old. Then you have no business entering the horse into the Kentucky Derby. @davesaub65622 жыл бұрын
Because it's a 20 horse race and normally the rail is clogged. It just opened perfectly for him, the fast start spread out the field and eliminated a bunch of horses, then he got an opening to get past the horse falling back on the rail and it was clear sailing.
