I just ordered a Vorteks 3S BLX for my first hobby grade RC rig. Found it on sale/clearance for $250 at Horizon Hobby. My mother got my almost 11 yr old son a gift certificate for Hobby Town for Christmas. We took him there to pick out a RC truck. He and i had both only had experience with the generic box store RC cars or trucks that you might get from Target or Walmart. At Hobby Town they helped my son pick out an Arrma Mojave Grom 223S BLX (red white and blue one that comes with a battery and charger). We got it home and I helped him figure out how to work the finer points of the remote (like steering trim, response, and DSC) then we let it rip. That little Grom is a screamer. With just the 2s stock battery, it was plenty fast for our driveway and gravel area. Anyways after trying my son's Mojave Grom out some and him worrying about me breaking it (I'm definitely a more aggressive driver than him) I got bit by the bug and went down a rabbit hole to see what the best RC Basher/Off road speed demon i could find for around $300. I was really eyeballing the RLAARLO Omni Terminator Carbon for a bit but didnt like that it would he hard to find parts without having to wait a couple of weeks. Then I was narrowing it down between either another Grom like my son's (either the Mojave or Typhon both seem awesome), a TA Reflex MT14, Redcat Volcano EPX Pro, Maverick Quantum 2 Flux (either the MT or XT) because I was wanting something where i could source parts from large US supplier (like A Main Hobbies, Hobby town, or Horizon Hobby). I had seen the Arrma Vortex line and was interested but it was just outside the price range I was wanting to spend on my first one (I'm sure another RC or two will follow, LOL), then today I spotted the Vorteks 3S for sale/clearance at Horizon Hobby for $250. After seeing a few videos like yours and Tomley RC i figured i had to jump on that deal! Yes its an older model that they are getting rid of to make way for the newer Vorteks 223s DSC versions but based on my reasearch (googling various suppliers, forums and YT vids) it looks like the main differences are the electronics. The newer Vektor 223s has an 80A 2-in1 ESC like (ESC and RX i believe) my sons Mojave Grom (although his is only 25 or 30 A). Also it has DSC for stability whereas the older Vorteks 3S has AVC for something like a stability control. There may be some other slight changes but i'm hoping there's some overlap with compatibily of parts so it might be easier to get replacements.

Awesome!!! You made an excellent choice with the older Vorteks. Like you said better electronics. Excellent price too. The newer model has a center differential but you can always just buy a center diff and housing for it when you’re ready but it’s epic without it anyway. I have a video showing how to do that on the granite and it’s the exact same procedure. But I have a center diff on the way cuz I’ll be doing it to my old Vorteks shortly too. Nice find! Just days ago the old Vorteks was still $369.

@DerbyCityRC after trying out my son's Mojave Grom BLX I was like this is bad a** and way too much fun. We didn't even get around to the 3s batteries for it to hit 50'ish mph. And if I keep driving my son's and break it, he'll be pissed at me (he was already starting to get on my case for adding some extra scuffs to it, LOL), so I figured that I better get my own to abuse. As mentioned earlier I'm a much more aggressive driver, and I'd like to push the limits to see what it's really capable of. My son on the other hand seems content to just drift it around the gravel and pavement and maybe a small jump here and there. I will say that after driving the Mojave Grom 223s BLX and watching a bunch of YT reviews they are definitely a great value for the money. I was tempted to just get a 2nd for myself so that my son and I could swap parts if needed and share batteries. But I also wanted to see what else was out there and if I could get something a bit bigger that will handle grass a little better. Also Dad's gotta have a bigger rig than kids right? 🤣 So that's how I settled on the Vorteks and the sale price seemed like a deal hard to pass up. I think the older Vorteks 3s just went on sale or something recently because I don't remember seeing them on sale a few days ago when I started down the rabbit hole (Sat night 1/18).

Hi mate great video great vorteks 4x4 3s 😊. I got one for my grandson Ryett. I changed motor mount shockers and put tower to tower centre brace. Once differentials destroy them selfs I've got metal differentials and drive shafts. It a fantastic Skatepark basher. 👍🤪🤣🤣🤣

Love my vorteks bought one right after it came out, upgraded the rear diff module to steel and put a hot racing aluminum case on it too. I put badlands on it too but now the system gets a bit hot on stock gearing

I freely admit that I am a Vorteks fan boy. I have the full 3s line and it is definitely my favorite. I showed it a little love with a 4S center diff, wide arm kit, chassis brace, metal F&R diffs, and 2.8" UpgradeRC Dirt Claw tires. The car is absolutely the best of the 3S line. After mods it is still the fastest and best handling. But with new tires it now has a ton of air control and is a stunt monster. I am about $600 or $700 into the truck but I don't regret a dime of it. Also...My condolences on your loss.

Just picked up my Vorteks last week. Absolutely love how it handles and it'll wheelie big time with decent 3s lipos. I am a little hesitant about how basically everything is plastic, even parts that on my kiddo's much cheaper rc car are metal like the drive shaft. Hopefully it was a design choice for weight and to allow flex where metal parts are not going to flex and will cause parts that connect to them to break.

Youre spot on with the metal parts. Even a lot of bigger cars are mostly plastic (though many are not). Its tough and is allowed to flex unlike metal 👍👍

I've got the vorteks boost I've made it 4x4 and 4s now I've got to upgrade the slipper clutch as it's plastic in the boost model but you are right it's a totally different rc than any of my other rc's

The shocks shafts seem to be a weak spot on mine as well on crooked landings. I have broke a lot of the front ones especially so I took the Traxxas gtr shocks and threw them on! Long and XX-Long did the trick for me! Seems like it fixed it.

Fantastic job on the review and on all the bashing too. I am a proud owner of the Arrma Vorteks BLX 3s I also never bothered to swap out the stock pinion gear for the same reason you haven't I just don't have much space to play around with the speed of it but if I had it? I'm very sure it would very fast mine's love doing wheelies especially on the aspault I even still mange to do it on the artificial grass at my local park I go too near by me I figure maybe that's because I have the punch settings on my ESC set very high as well as the settings on the radio set to 100% for throttle now I don't do jumps with it mainly because I don't have any ramps nor do I have a skatepark around me also if I'm lucky I might get a tiny jump off a curve somewhere on the street?

Cheapest one they have is $159 or so and the big one I had is $223, which is well priced for the other ramps I’ve seen, especially being so lightweight. "i broke a shock" yup thats exaclty what happend with mine a few weeks after owning it - just recently had a wheel fall completely off... just got it back from the shop - hope things stop breaking... i just noticed when they replaced the left front shock they didnt put the same one back.. this new one is a bit taller...so i just grabbed the 2nd "new taller shock" and installed it.. been riding with it crooked.. and didnt even notice till now.. but now my front end sits up pretty high compared to the back.. but i think it could be good in a way... gonna take it out tomorrow and do some shredding ^_^

The Vorteks is my favorite 3s even still, but it may be the most fragile for some reason also lol. Not sure why as it’s built pretty much the same. They probably either put rear shocks on the front or used granite shocks. They’re a little taller. I actually really like the Vorteks with granite shocks though.

I had a Vorteks a while back and had two issues... Rocks would constantly lock up the steering, and rocks would also bind up and wear out the center drive shaft. Maybe they've resolve this with the version you have. Certainly seems like you've taken it to some rocky areas and had no issues.

Almost every car I take on the gravel gets the steering slightly bound, this one didn’t but could have been lucky lol Ya I could see rocks getting nestled next to the center shaft and cutting it up but luckily that didn’t happen either. Maybe they did do a bit of a redesign there!

Bought a used broken one. Stripped diff gear and shot motor bearing. Looks like they get lots of dirt inside due to the hole on the bottom of the gearbox. Hope it holds up once it's back together....ran it once and it ripped! But that motor bearing was making a racket. Should have less than $250 in it✊🤞🤞

I haven’t driven the vortex, I do have a granite. I put the “wide kit” on my granite that’s not actually a kit… 😂 I got the RPM arms for the typhoon/big rock and it makes the granite next level! It handles so much better and doesn’t roll over anywhere near as easy. You also have to get longer turnbuckles. I highly recommend widening the granite! You still have the shorter wheelbase for air control, flips and stunts, etc. and you have a wider stance for ground control, handling and drifting! It’s the best of both worlds! Although I haven’t driven a big rock or a vortex so I could be WAY off 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thanks for another great video!!

Did that to my Granite a while ago. Definitely more stable, it rarely flips over other than on bad landings.

That vortex rips! You gotta do the 3s Typhon next. I know your not a buggy guy but that one will convert you for sure! It jumps so high and far, not the trixter so much but the way it hugs the ground and rips it up, man it is so much fun to drive.

Funny Video😂 so far actually like the slipper clutch =wheelie machine😊 Truck has surprised me since day1. Now on 4s 130a and rc4wd rear metal axles for that hi punch power! Stock motor/gearing and this things insane on 4s Always will have a Vorteks or two around.

It’s gyro but I believe there is more to it just don’t know for sure what 😅 and yes there is a knob right on the transmitter!! You’re welcome!

That slower binding seems to be a gyro thing. My Felony has a gyro and it binds slower than any of my other RCs. I'm not saying that 100% is the issue, but I know the gyro waits a few seconds to get a baseline yaw reading, at least that's what my manual told me. And so far, Mr Manuel has not led me astray.

Hello, congratulations on the video. I want to buy a 1/10 scale RC car, I'm looking at the Losi Tenacity DB PRO. I would like to know your opinion because I'm going to use the RC car for jumps. Is the Losi Tenacity DB PRO better suited than the Arrma Vorteks? Judging by your video, the Vorteks held up well on the jumps. I wonder if the Losi Tenacity holds up better? Thanks.

Thanks! I actually don’t own a Losi yet. But I hear that they may not be as durable. That always depends on who you ask. I would probably go Vorteks there. But I would also check out the Redcat Valkyrie. I reviewed that a few weeks ago and it is awesome and a little cheaper.

Ok so ARRMA vortex, WOV racing blitzkrieg or Ralarrlo Omni terminator carbon edition? Which one option would be best. I think i like the vortex most but hesitant because it’s older? I’m new to the hobby and my only experience is this darn hyper go , which i fix more than i run. And don’t believe the vortex has a center diff 🙃 whatever that means. I just hear @derbycityRC going crazy over it lol. Sorry for your loss man 😢. You won someone new to the hobby. Think leaving the sneaker collection and diving into something rewarding. RC baby!! Thanks for the condolences man! Your three choices up there are good! The vorteks does not have a center diff. That’s the downfall, though on one end, it kinda drives like it has one. I almost always choose center diff but this one hits different. The wov is amazing for the money, has the center diff, it’s much bigger, though a little slower but that doesn’t bother me. The omni is awesome, but it loses brownie points for its size and really its speed. Dude you can’t go wrong with any of them, and I’ve gotten this question several times today and still don’t know how to answer it 🤣. If I had to choose to get rid of one, it would probably be the Omni for the above reasons, but between the wov and the vorteks, that’s on you 🤣. Whatever you choose, your support is appreciated by using the link I’ve provided for any RC in the video descriptions, but either way I appreciate you watching, joining the hobby, and enjoying the vids! The Vorteks looks fun but seems less durable than the Granite. I got the Granite a few weeks ago after seeing your review and others as it seems like the toughest basher for jumping. I'll be doing the wheel extension mod down the road but for now the only issue I've had is the plastic spur gear stripped after only a few hours use. Some of that was on sand and gravel so I wonder if some debris got in there to strip the gear. RIP to your Grandpa. ❤

The granite definitely has some things going for it that might add durability, like the bigger tires helping cushion and stop control arms from bending as much. I’m surprised you stripped a spur. Actually in any of my Arrmas I have yet to damage a gear at all. Diffs included. I know it will happen though. lol Yes the sand definitely could have greatly contributed to that. Nice I just got the same ramp myself no fair I paid for mine lol it is nice I fit it in my hatchback no problem for the 36 inch I can easily launch my Xmaxx off of it. Can you turn the punch up? That will help with air control.

Haha sorry to make this difficult. Uuummmmm. Man that’s tough. This handles a little better for sure. The WOV is bigger, a little slower, but also has the center diff. Though 44 mph is plenty for me lol. When it comes to big crashes, I feel the Arrma might handle that better but in the one video of each so far, broke the exact same parts on each truck lol. Parts for the wov are now available on the buddy RC site, so parts availability is good for both. Really can’t go wrong with either but a seriously tough question. (Whichever you decide, if you use the links we provide for any RC, it helps us out, so we always appreciate that). I want to say the WOV due to the size for the money, but Arrma has the familiarity of being tried and true over the long term (though still has issues). If you have any other questions, I’ll do my best to help you decide lol

About the binding delay……You likely already know, but the Vorteks comes with a gyro. It needs to be bound on a flat surface and takes an extra few seconds to calibrate.
