I've watched a lot of videos on this derecho event, and I have to say, this is the only one I didn't fast forward at times through. What I think sets this apart is that it captures the sound so much better than any other video I've seen on this event. Thanks for posting!

I researched this dericho. In Cedar Rapids it had sustained winds of 80 mph (Cat 1) with gust of 130 (Cat 4). Duration 40 minutes. Warning time 7 minutes. According to the National Weather Center. I’ve experienced hurricanes all my life. Only cat 1’s and 2’s. Never had major damage. Just trees, shingles, patio covers torn off, trampoline that set sail and prolonged power outages.

You would rather have a tornado then a Derecho. This is called a land Hurricane. This made earth’s history of the strongest thunderstorm to hit earth. Strongest derecho on record. It traveled 1000miles. Cedar Rapids was hit the hardest 140mph. It cased more damage then any hurricane this year. $1billion+ in damages.

Incredible footage! I live in NE Illinois and we got the storm hours later but not with these winds. By us they were between 75-85mph but it lasted so very long! I really don't remember a storm going on for as long as it did. Of all the videos I've watched out of Cedar Rapids, you were just about the only ones not in their basement! Yet you brave people are in your garage with the door open, yikes! We didn't even do that and you had it so much worse! Glad you were safe but sorry you and your entire community had so much damage. Unbelievable video!

Having been born and raised in Michigan and then living in Florida since 2003, I have been through both derechos and hurricanes. although I have never seen a derecho last this long, I would guess sustained winds of 105 mph, with 140 mph gusts, which you would see in a borderline Cat 2/3 hurricane. One possible danger of having the garage door open is if the winds were to shift, they could have come up under the garage door and pushed the roof up. One thing I have been warned about during hurricanes.

Tara Misteria, they have stated 140mph winds. It’s still a mess in Cedar Rapids, even a month after, still trying to get the tree debris picked up and stacked then I think they’re shredding it before winter comes. So many people still waiting on insurance companies that don’t want to cover and not near enough roofers. Cedar Rapids is my hometown but I live 45 minutes north now, we didn’t get what they got, but I was down the 2 Nd day after to bring my son and his family gasoline for a great neighbor who shared his generator, ice and propane to cook on the grill. Farmers have to try to get grain bins and roof debris out of their corn and soy bean fields before they could even think about trying to use what was left for silage. Beans didn’t get hurt so bad since they don’t grow tall like the corn. The only good point in this whole mess was since there are so many grain bins damages, the corn harvest will suck also, so they won’t need as many bins. Most of the really bad corn fields are being tilled under which will probably be an issue for volunteers corn coming up in the spring. Yes it going to be an issue for the farmers for more than just this year.

Does insurance cover natural disastrous in the US? I live in NZ and alot of insurance companies do not and the ones that do are extremely expensive.
@CJP-oz6hr3 жыл бұрын
Just saw your question as I was watching this video ..... Yes, insurance covers for tornadoes, thunderstorms, and basically any weather that can damage a home. The only real exception is flood damage. Normally, the only time people carry flood insurance is when it’s mandated as part of a mortgage if the home is in a floodplain. Floodplain being an area that would flood at least once every 100 years. I have heard that areas subject to hurricanes have higher premiums for that coverage. I live in Colorado and in 2004 we had over 4 feet of snow in Denver. Some homes had foundations collapse due to the weight of snow on the roof........and yes, that would be covered under your standard home owners insurance. Oh, and we had a heavy hail storm about three years ago.....and yes, a new roof and misc was covered by insurance. I grew up in southeastern Kansas yet didn’t “see” my first tornado until I moved to Colorado!

@@jasolhe - Fortunately (I guess, if you can call 115+mph winds fortunate!) a derecho is a straight-line wind. There's no rotation like in a hurricane or tornado. So you can see that the wind is coming only from the left, and kind of from behind, so is not looping into the garage at all. I rode the storm out inside my first-floor apartment in the Chicago suburbs, no garage but it definitely was intense! - and I stayed well away from windows, much as I was fascinated by the whole thing

*sustained winds up to 90 MPH gusts at 100 highest gust 112*. Also, these arent real whiteout winds. You can still see. Ive experienced real hurricanes and whiteout winds over 130 MPH sustained and they look way more intense. You guys probably took a beating though, it was almost a cat 2 hurricane in a place where there are no hurricanes. All hurricanes are strong, dont take this as offensive, but it was a cat 1 equivalent storm. Your trees and houses arent used to that kind of wind.
