I enjoy this, but to be fair, it does sound like they forgot to unwrap the microphones before hitting the "record" button.

in fairness, this is a probably a direct rip from a cassette, recorded in the early 70s, by essentially diy labels, in east Africa, under the rule of a dynasty that was on the verge of being quashed by a military coup. might have been a lil difficult to get super high quality equipment in. side point tho,i think there's something sonically beautiful about lofi records in that it reminds you that normal people made it, people who made their music happen without backing. just like the scratches on a painting, it conveys the economic conditions of the artists & production team. instead of it applied as an effect for Vibe like a lot of modern records (to mimic that tape-warpy sound), it's great that some releases just sorta sound like that, and as tapes get old they degrade too so they have their own 'mix' if you will, separate to a high fidelity recording. my partner has a copy of Morrissey's "Viva Hate" & honestly it sounds ridiculous how badly it's degraded but it makes for an almost experimental listen lol

@@selfpityingslogan yes, I am aware; was just being silly. Friends used to ask why I would listen to cassettes of old Grateful Dead concerts with hiss and flutter, but these recordings captured an essence, and sometimes provide even olfactory sensations connected to memory or something. Thanks for your reply!

What a flat and boring music.

the historic lineage of Ethiopian jazz music remains a proud & vital example of the beauty & potential of the region, denied by imperial intervention. the only reason Ethiopia (its musical movements or otherwise) didn't thrive after the period where a lot of this kinds of music in the 60s/70s was being released (with hope to spark a new cultural revolution for musicians & citizens alike) is bc they were occupied by a domineering & dogmatic Soviet militia. "After a period of civil unrest that began in February 1974, a provisional administrative council of soldiers, known as the Derg ("committee"), seized power from the aging Emperor Haile Selassie I on September 12, 1974, and installed a government that was socialist in name and military in style. The Derg summarily executed 59 members of the former government, including two former prime ministers and crown councilors, court officials, ministers, and generals. Emperor Haile Selassie died on August 22, 1975. He was allegedly strangled in the basement of his palace or smothered with a wet pillow.[110]" "Mengistu's years in office were marked by a totalitarian-style government and the country's massive militarization, financed by the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc, and assisted by Cuba. In December 1976, an Ethiopian delegation in Moscow signed a military assistance agreement with the Soviet Union. The following April 1977, Ethiopia abrogated its military assistance agreement with the United States and expelled the American military missions." which meant: america out, no bourgeois jazz/art, no fun essentially lol you can disagree on interest in the style, but historically this period of free expression, which in my eyes, created a lot of beautiful, idiosyncratic music. a lot of it too was influenced by classical African styles of songwriting who's creative ambition dwarfed a lot of American jazz at the time as it had became more pop-commercialised. it's a piece of bittersweet history but it is also (imo) majority amazing art that has its place and should be respected !

@@selfpityingslogan I know the Ethiopian history and Derg. But seems like you don't have any clue about music and beauty. Not much geography and linguistic neither.
