I never realized Duane Allman used to mute with his right/picking hand where everybody else uses their fretting/slide hand to mute from behind the slide. Duane was so good and had such a touch that he muted with the right hand. And was able to play cleaner than anyone in the history of slide guitar. That's why hes the best. Always will be.

I never heard that. I've always muted with my right pickin' hand. Years ago it just came natural. I read somewhere it was called muting, but I never thought about it. There's not much being done today, that hasn't been done by others, usually others who have been gone long ago. It's cool...Derek has such a style and sound you can pick out hearing it! Great slide man. ✌😎

@@mickknight6963 it'd not something widely spoken of. I don't remember where it was that I heard/read it but it makes sense when you watch Duane play. His fingers behind the slide stick up in the air instead of lay down on the strings like most everyone else. I'm guessing he was just, so used to muting that way, when playing fingerstyle that it easily carried over to slide, too, since he played slide with fingers.

What youre describing is something of a standard idea within slide players who pick with their fingers. Yes, slide players often mute behind the slide with their slide hand fingers too(again a typical idea) - sometimes they dont mute behind the slide to achieve a 'rawer' sound. The muting on the picking hand is to stop unwanted string noise that the slide will inevitably make background noise on strings that arent being picked, yet unless muted with the right hand will make a sympathetic ring from the slide moving about on the strings. Both forms of muting achieve different results - either hands muting cant stop the unwanted sound occurring from the other side!

BB king would 'Pass' for a Pope - he likes people across the board - no matter what - we are all saddened for missing him! See how treats artists around him - love & respect! that what he is; he was; and will be in the next life ..........
