He was a fabulous bowler. Fast, awkward bounce, turn, and relentlessly accurate.

A really nice guy and brilliant bowler. Don’t forget the century he scored in 84 at Hastings Now the site of a supermarket. You were the best Derek.

Terrific bowler and a superb outfielder, which aspect often doesn't get talked about. He was also, by all accounts, a mensch. RIP

Deadly Derek. A true legend and as a lifetime Kent supporter, my bowling hero. I was lucky to see him bowl on many occasions. May he rest in peace and sincere commiserations to his family and friends.

Don’t sell Underwood short by suggesting that conditions had to be favourable for him to be effective. He was incredibly accurate and precise in his delivery on any surface and without doubt the best English spinner of the last sixty years by a long chalk.

So sad to hear of the passing of Derek Underwood - "Deadly" was the master of bowling on uncovered/drying pitches. How many times did Wisden record "c.Knott b.Underwood" OR "st.Knott b.Underwood" As a huge cricket fan in the 70's & 80's my mates and I would always write down OUR "England XII" before the Chairman had named the England Test Team and then take the stats from the Test Series to see who won OUR ASHES (the remnants of a BBQ, in a glued shut WG Grace Toby Jug - which as the last winner I still have) and Deadly NEVER let me down. There was always a heightened sound audible from the crowd when the England Captain was about to bring him on and he began to mark out his run up. RIP Derek, your record as England's leading wicket taking spinner is testament to your Greatness 🙏🏏🏏🙏

Very sad on passing of England's legendary spinner. I grew up listening to Derek Underwood and as a 8 year "trader" of player pictures other than Dennis Amiss his picture was my cherished possession of English players. Rest in Peace and condolences to Derek Underwood's dear ones.

As an Aussie watched him at the MCG during the Centenary test in 77. Again in 1980 at the G. Awesome spin bowler. I'm sure fellow spinner, Kerry O'Keefe has got some cracking jokes about him.

RIP Deadly Derek. One of the finest bowlers in the modern game. Left arm spin is not easy, like Bishen Bedi as well. A great of Kent with Cowdrey and Knott.🏏🇬🇧

Very sad. Mum and dad were great friends of Derek, Dawn and their daughters. I spent a lot of time with the family as a kid. And share a birthday with Deadly. His birthday gift to me one year was a ball he brought back from a test match for me. A kind soul, an inspirational cricketer.

They call him a spinner but even Underwood said he bowled cutters rather than spin.
