Went to MANY birthday parties (Arlene was shot in or outside the birthday party room), went on tours of the kitchen where Neil died.... Obviously we were kids and didn't know what happened at the time. But I still remember what that place looks like actually. The McDonald's is gone now and is where teenagers drink (atleast it was when I was that age). My mom knew Arlene's family, so I remember seeing and chatting with her a bunch at events, she always went to hockey games. My family was also close with the Muise family. I also went to the same high school as the 3 monsters, and was taught by alot of the same teachers. This tragedy rocked the community for YEARS, and it blows my mind how not many people know about it

@sydneyyoung73522 жыл бұрын
I live in Canada, and I'm not sure I agree. I think 25 years is a long time, and it may encourage rehabilitation if they have the opportunity to make a case for their release. I don't know if it has ever worked or not, but on principle it seems like a reasonable policy. I think criminals are more than just the crime they commit, they're also human. Some humans have disorders that might make them unfit to be in society, I don't know if things like sociopathy are treated/treatable, but maybe some people make horrendous decisions and yet still have the capacity to grow and change. These guys didn't just rob a McDonald's and brutally murder people, they lived for years before that happened, and they lived 25 years after it happened.
@Kevin-cy2dr2 жыл бұрын
@@sydneyyoung7352 there's nothing wrong with rehabilitation instead of punishment,but these people could be a threat to society. So its better for them to remain in a minimum security prison where they can learn stuff and get some entertainment.
@sydneyyoung73522 жыл бұрын
@@Kevin-cy2dr I see what you're saying, it could be argued "it's not worth the risk", or even that it's a deterrent. What do you think, though, about the principle of "thought crime" or not arresting people for crimes they haven't commit yet? Based on the premise, which I personally don't know to be valid or invalid, that people with personality disorders such as APD are capable of being well-adjusted and well-behaved members of society: should we imprison people who have been rehabilitated because they _might_ commit another crime and we'd rather not risk it? As far as the deterrent thing, I might be wrong but I think it's been widely accepted that individuals deserve not to be made an example of. Beyond that, I would think that a "minimum 25y" sentence is enough of a deterrent, given that the worst criminals probably don't expect to be caught.

@Amelia and @BeBeDaShA Thank you both for your posts about this condition, which must be incredibly distressing every day. I had to look it up and read a bit. This must be awful for a family with someone who suffers from this --- I'm sure they are called crazy, picky, causing trouble etc, if no one realises that it is so profound. I also appreciate sound quality, but only because of age hearing loss, which drives me crazy - subtitles are a great help, although my lifelong love of music makes it heartbreaking at times. Honestly, you have both given me a kick up my old arse. I really don't know what else to write, except thank you both, and my very best wishes from Ireland.

Where you’re telling about small town crimes I suggest u look up the case of Justin Bourque from Moncton in 2014. That’s a rabbit hole I think you’d do a great episode on.

I was born and raised in Sydney. I moved to Montreal at 21, swearing to never return to Cape Breton. I had my daughter at 26 and when she turned 5, a woman was stabbed two blocks from where we lived. I was sick with worry. A few days pass and I turned on the TV and there's Cape Breton and Rita MacNeil. I LOST it ! I burst into tears and told my husband, a big city boy, that I wanted to go home. We had been back home for less than a year when this horrific thing happened. Here's something few know...that MD's reopened. It was macabre. They tore it down not too long after.

I’m always shocked when people set out to murder others, that an act of such grave consequence is often committed with so little planning or attention to detail. Murder is tragic, but the blind stupidity and rashness of some of these perpetrators can be more shocking than the murders themselves. The incredibly poor thought processes taking place are often so evident that it’s hard for a rational person to grasp. We are just left, once again, to say with astonishment, “How can anyone be so stupid?”

It really bothers me that there are so many law enforcement departments that believe bogus finger pointing and/or confessions and arrest people before trying to find out if the facts even somewhat match the supposed confession/blaming. This happens way too often, I believe that (especially in the US, I'm not that familiar with Canadian law enforcement) there needs to be more education for officers investigating crimes and that there needs to be a higher burden of proof before they are allowed to arrest people (especially in horrific cases like this one). I do agree that they should be allowed to "hold" suspects in custody for 24 hours, but certainly no longer than 48 hours - people can lose their jobs and have public opinions turned against them very quickly - for having done nothing wrong.

OHMYGOD. THANK YOU!! I worked for mcdonalds cananda for over 10 years, so this hits hard home. I always had to tell this story to my new "kids" when they were hired because it is always brought up in conversation and it definitely is scary but it it's now why we don't have basements.

I let my kids watch things most parents wouldn’t allow. I don’t think it’s good to shelter and censor kids from things however it is very important to talk and discuss certain things so they aren’t confused. Open communication, love and trust go a long way and all 3 of my babies are amazing human beings.
