In this video I go over all the different components and parts and give my thoughts and review the Harbor Freight Predator 212cc Powered 20 Ton Log Splitter. I talk about leaks on the hydraulic pump, the reliability of Predator Engines from Harbor Freight, how it functions, assembling the Harbor Freight Predator 20 ton log splitter and split a little wood with it to show how it does.

I bought one several years ago very satisfied me and a friend race two other friends they had one of the brand name ones that cost three times as much most of them only cutting One Direction We race them filled up my truck in half the time they fill theirs very satisfied great log splitter for the money durable never had any trouble love it Best Best Buy for way less he does not use it very efficiently in the video if you have two guys one bringing the logs and feeding them one guy rolling them in off the side rack operating the splitter throwing them in the back of the truck with the logs already cut to length two guys can split a truck full of wood with sides on the truck as high as the cab they can feel it in less than 45 minutes if it is done efficiently again love it Best Buy great durable machine

That's so cool how it splits both ways!

I have this splitter for 2 years now. Probably split 7 cords with it last year and the year before. Will start this years splitting tomorrow. Great splitter for the price. One drawback I found is the cleanout. Woos chunks are hard to get out around the ends of the cylinder. I have a few videos on this splitter myself. New subscriber from Oregon.

It's really nice that it splits both directions, no wasted motion. I've worked on a couple of different log splitters, Barreto and some other brand (I think from Tractor supply). The Barreto ones are solid, the only real problem we had with those was the dealer assembled them and delivered them to us, but didn't bother to pack the wheel bearings! So we had a bearing blow and a wheel fall off. The off brand one had the control valve mounted to the cylinder, and it got broken multiple times, so would not recommend that style. Also that's awesome that harbor frieght sent you that, get those free tools dude!

Ya the tractor supply ones fall under the brand “county line”. There are some Chinese equipment companies that are making gas powered log splitters. I wonder if it was one of those? Ya that’s one thing I should have remembered for this review that you have to pack the wheel bearings with grease on assembly which is important (obviously). Thanks for watching and supporting the channel as always!

Mr. Derek, somehow I got unsubscribed from your channel. Thought about it the other day and realized I hadn’t seen a video of yours in several months. Looked it up and realized I was no longer subscribed. I re-subscribed and have been catching up. Glad to see you’re still making content. Keep up the great work. 💪🏼💪🏼

Back in the 80's we bought the main cylinder, hoses couplers, fluid and valve and built a log splitter on a piece if I beam mounted to an axle. Welded a piece of 1/2" steel with flanges on one end of the beam and mounted the main cylinder to the other end. Don't know how much the stuff would be now, but back then we did it for around $250 bucks. Instead of using a small engine to power it we quick coupled the hydraulic hoses up to the back of our old John Deere "A" model tractor and used its pump to power everything. We'd run the tractor so slowly it always sounded like it was about to die (If you've ever heard an old 2 cylinder JD idling you know the sound, LOL) and it had more than enough power to split anything we could put on it, even knotty old sweet gum logs.

Love to hear about that stuff! Don’t they call those old 2 cylinder John Deere’s Johnny Poppers? My grandpa has a restored (it’s been a few years so it’s looking a little rough) 2 cylinder John Deere from way back in the day. Ya these log splitters are $1000+ today. I’d love to have a 3 point log splitter ran off the PTO of my old ford 8N but at the same time I like the stand alone unit.

Good review. I plan on buying the 5 ton to start with. Budget wise. I'm off grid living also. Thanks for information about the splitter. Enjoy your wood splitting season

Thanks James. I think that 5 ton would work well off a generator. I’ve seen your videos with the big shed. You’ve got some nice scenery around you. Very tranquil!

Make sure you get a 10 gauge extension cord when you’re picking the 5 ton up at HF. it will make a HUGE difference in power.

Hey man, I just got one of these splitters used but the backward split is very weak compared to the forward split. Where should i look first? I'm not too familiar with these machines. Thank you.

Since you said you live in the desert SW, I assume you are at high-ish altitude. Did you have to buy and install the high altitude jet for the carburetor? The manual said you needed to for above 5,000 ft to get better efficiency from the engine.
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects
@DereksWorkshopAndProjects 6 ай бұрын
I am in high elevation. 5600 ft above sea level. I did install it but had an issue that was my fault due to reassembling the gaskets incorrectly, thought it was the jets fault, changed the jet back out to stock, then reassembled it incorrectly again to realize that it was mechanic error and I put it back together correctly and it ran fine, so it’s on the to do list to reinstall the correct jet…. To give you all the details.

@@DereksWorkshopAndProjects thanks for the response. I'm at 6,900 ft and it seems to run fine. So I'm not sure if I will upgrade or not. What kit did you buy? It's not easy to find the right size.
