Derelict 147 year old Forgotten House In the Mountains of North Carolina

Built around 1870-1880 for a wealthy southern family, who raised mostly cattle and other live stock. Stayed in the same family until the 60s when it was essentially never updated and basically left forgotten as a project for another day which never ended up coming. I thought the disconnected upstairs rooms were pretty unique and definitely help give you and idea of how old the house is! The live in help would’ve had there own room in your house

Architectural particulars and detail seem to be a thing of the past or just too time consuming, difficult and or expensive. New everything now-a-day is made cheap, quick and disposable----- Just in case they need or want to tear it down and forge a parking lot. YOU KNOW HOW MUCH WE NEED YET ANOTHER PARKING LOT!

For those commenting on dark, oppressive feel of the dark walls in the entrance hall - my North Carolina farmhouse, built in 1883, has extremely dark Wainscoting in our original main hallway. It is caused by the original staining of the wood, which used water-based binders. The well water used probably had high levels of iron & other minerals. This causes antique stains to turn a very dark color. It's very difficult to strip. I may need to paint over it, but with our restoration, we are trying to preserve everything we can. Built by my husband's great-grandfather, I am undecided!

I'm from North Carolina; what county is this house? From the landscape, looks like it might be located in the foothills since there aren't any large mountains visible.(I live in Eastern NC) Love the house.

Beautiful. Stunning wood work. My carpenter grandfather that I never knew was said to have built a freestanding stairway without a single nail that was displayed at the museum of science and industry in Chicago or so I was told. I've never been able to confirm it. I think of him when I see these houses.

Wow those stairs! Those interlocking spindles on the stair rail are fabulous! And possibly a design like what your grandad built, it is kind of amazing to think that WOOD was easier to come by than Nails? If they milled their own wood while clearing the property, and had plenty of time to pay attention to detail, this would be the result.

If I could do anything and money was no object. I would save every old abandoned house that is out there. And let them be loved again. I have a 1916 farmhouse that we have been redoing for 28 years now. It was in real sad shape when we bought it. My realtor tried to talk me out of it many times. But I fell in love with it. It was my dream house and it wanted me to save it. So we are. At least I am saving one old house.

Thank you for documenting this old home, it has a lot of memories in it. A very large family lived there once, according to one of the great grandchildren, there were 4 bedrooms downstairs, 4/5 bedrooms upstairs (this was long ago, so memory not perfect, she was little), big dining area, kitchen and attic. The grandkids had their own bench to sit on and eat at the huge table. This home was recently destroyed by fire, a controlled burn to allow the fire department to practice their skills by the current owner. Truly a sad event! This home was magnificent in its day, I remember driving by that house before the gingerbreadwork trims were removed, the stained glass windows, the interior of the home was stripped of most of the chestnut, oak and mahoghany woodwork within, but it sounded like in the video that there were a few remnants of it left behind. A loss for Alleghany county NC history. Love your channel, Kappy, thank you!

From the outside that house looked so cool but once you went in side and all of that dark wood, although beautiful, felt depressions and oppressive. I’d hate to be the one to have to polish it all!!! The staircase was so intricate again uggg to polish! All the rooms that had the bay walls, so awesome! It was rather odd to find all the wood and no lathe and plaster though up stairs. It looked as though there may have been wallpaper up at one time? Thanks for tease of upcoming houses, not! OMG where do you find such amazing pieces of magic????? What an amazing house! The brown wooden walls are unique. It's not uncommon for the servant's quarters to be right near the kitchen like they are in this house. You can see where the stove, sink, & fridge were in the kitchen. However, it appears that this house never had a bathroom. It looks to me like someone started fixing up the house but sadly never finished the project. This house can be saved & updated, but it needs a lot of costly work done to it.

There was a hole in one upstairs wall close to the ceiling for a coal stove

Because heat rises, no need for fireplaces upstairs. Also fire burns oxygen. Safer to not burn wood upstairs.

Also very expensive to heat upstairs where they probably only slept.

@@andychris7647 yes, we're doing fine. We just had our second vaccination back in March. I hope you're doing well, too. I love these older homes, I sure hate to see them fall to ruin.

Just imagine how pretty that house would have been when it was lived in all that woodwork and those stairs. Wow just think how nice they would have been all shiny. I love Old houses Thanks for the explore Kappy No fireplaces upstairs because did you notice the holes for stove pipes? Probably had pot belly stoves in bedrooms.

The exterior looked so spooky with all the vines. The perfect haunted house. The interior looked much better. It looked very dry inside so maybe that’s why? It looks like you’ve got a lot of upcoming videos from the sneak peek at the end. Can’t wait!

I can’t get over the amount of houses that can be restored or at least save the wood and other wood features. Must be some guys that can salvage all of it. You sure do have great pickens down south.

As far as the servants stairs not connecting to the main house could it have at one time and just been walled off at some point? that does seem rather strange. Gorgeous house, bet it was a real beauty, back in the day! Thanks for sharing another interesting house with us! Love your channel, stay safe and God bless!
