"To obey-just like that-for the sake of obeying, without questioning...that's something only people like you can do, Captain." One of the best lines of the movie, and definitely one of the overall themes. I love how this comes back later on, when Ofelia is ordered by the Faun to harm her brother, and refuses despite the Faun saying earlier that she had to do everything she was told. In the end, that choice was her final victory, when she chose not to blindly obey.

This is what cinema should be about. Such a powerfull scene and even more powerfull mesagge. This movie is a absolute masterpiece. As my grandfather grew up in the exact same part of Spain being exactly as old as Ofelia, this movie means everything to me. I was able to show him this movie shortly before his passing and it was beyond priceless to be granted a look into his past with him beside me. Apart from that personal fact this movie explodes of symbolism. Its combines so much of this worlds art into one big message. Its dares you to think deeper about the harsh reality of fascism and how important it is to hold on to the child in one self. To me, the most brilliant movie of all time. I always liked how this scene adds to Vidal's character when contrasted with the later betrayal by Mercedes. He murders the doctor not because he betrays his trust, but because he stands up to him to his face. Up until the ending, Mercedes is terrified of the captain and never talks back or contradicts him.
@patsybob11 жыл бұрын
What's more horrifying is the fact that the doctor is the expert looking after the Captain's sick wife and unborn child. This scene shows the sheer cruelty and stupidity of the Captain. Not to mention the contrast of the characters. The doctor hates to see others suffer, the Captain enjoys it. It resonates with how the poor were treated too, the Doctor did the only thing he could but in reality most of the poor in Spain died in severe agony without even painkillers to numb the pain.

His arrogance and military pride end up shaping this character that it is not easy to get rid of after finishing watching the film, the film by Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro has managed to portray as few times that essence mixture of fear and harshness that the character instills.

This scene represents key characters meaning it is great for analysing them. This scene is also great at analysing themes like Faschism and historical (+ political) context. This scene highlights Vidal's characterisation he is the most horrifying being in the film even with the monsters and creatures throughout furthermore without his evil act of killing the doctor, other people such as his wife would've survived. Dr Ferriero is highlighted as a man who doesn't want to feel like a puppet "Only men like you can make an order without questioning". Also at his death, him touching his nose before death implies he is at peace with the situation and knows he did what was right. Vidal's repetition of "Why didn't you obey me? highlights him as a ruthless, demeaning character who wants to be in control of everything and even though he thinks he has, someone like Dr Ferreiro (a man on honestly and respect) will ignore his words to what's right even if it leads to his demise.... but eventual demise of those who Vidal cares about. Also the score in this scene is great at intensifying the atmosphere

Too many people don't seem to understand that he isn't "taking" the shot. He didn't even realise that he got shot, and if he did, he certainly did not feel it. This scene is exceptionally realistic filmmaking, if you got shot from behind in vital organs like he did here, you wouldn't feel it at all. You likely wouldn't even hear the gunshot, and possibly won't know you got shot before it is too late.
@__-vb3ht3 жыл бұрын
It may be realistic, but I don't think it was meant to be about realism. Del Toro doesn't strike me as someone who would strive for hyper-realism, especially in a literal fairy tale. Probably his intention was to really serve the narrative, to portray the doctor's resistance and dignity. That just happened to look like what it might look like in the real world.
@NoriMori19922 жыл бұрын
Of course you would hear the gunshot, gunshots are extremely loud, way louder than they show in movies. I think he does realize he got shot (otherwise why would he even react at all), and is just having a realistic reaction to it.

I seem to forget, what exactly did Vidal take from the doctor's kit at 0:40?
@bacondropped8 жыл бұрын
Ah, right, it's a vial of antibiotics identical to the one which he found earlier at a rebel camp.

There is a very important chunk cut out of this sequence. Does anybody know where I can find a length with it in? It's the scene where the mandrake root is thrown in the fire.

This is another example of the themes of chaos and disobedience. Captain Vidal represents the Alpha Male: authoritative, strong, and powerful, but also stoic and indifferent. Whilst the Doc is a relatively weak, but gentle, intellectual, and compassionate man. Vidal uses his masculine strength to kill the Doctor, yes. However through his gentleness and compassion he is able to die a dignified, proud, and good death whilst Vidal succumbs to his own intimidation tactics, misogyny, and ego. Beta trumps Alpha, I suppose.

It was physically painful to use the terms "Beta" and "Alpha" in an unironic context.
@tamasvarga98627 жыл бұрын
your analysis is shallow and wrong. the doctor is only weak physically. it takes an immense amount of strength to do something like he did fully aware that the captain will kill him for it. and the captain is only strong physically. everyone can be an alpha male with a gun. he isn't indifferent and stoic, he is a violent psychopath.
@kjendrock13667 жыл бұрын
Captain Vidal was an alpha in his estimation only. And maybe to the ass-kissing toadies he constantly had in tow. When his time of reckoning came, he showed his true, pathetic nature. He was nothing without his little troupe of boot-lickers.
@jjviolator6 жыл бұрын
Wrong. The captain was a pussy and a bully, real alpha males do not shoot unarmed people in the back while they are walking away. His power comes from his gun. Remove the gun and he's powerless. The doctor had more balls by standing up to him, knowing that he would be killed for doing so. He died but went out like a man.

Ironically, because he killed the doctor here, he had to stitch the cheek scar the housekeeper later gives him all on his own. He was right, that pride was his weakness.

Paul no truly leftist can be with Catalonian secessionists. Their speech is intoxicated with supremacism and absolute contempt towards poorer southern states which they don’t want to help through taxes. They say they are lazy, stupid and even “moorish”, while Catalonia is linked to the European tradition and the empire of Charlemagne. How is that exactly leftist?
