Having trouble with washing machine smells or blocks? Here is just one of a few ways of dealing with it. Very useful if you have a long run of pipe to the soil pipe like this one.

Hi Al As a retired appliance engineer I came across many washers with smells or blockages in my time, the one I'll all ways remember, the lady called me out, washer wasn't draining off, after checking all the usual things I took the waste hose off the m/c, it was blocked with fat from a duck she had drained down the sink which went into m/c drain hose and set solid when cold ! From Coventry 👍.

Great video. We have a waste pipe on the opposite side of the kitchen to the sink. We put a new kitchen in now the wastw pipe is smelling. On the floor about 6 inches from the pipe wws a hole in the floor with a black ribbed pipe. I tiled over it, do you think that was some sort of air i let to stop it smelling?

Thank you for this. I have a standpipe with a P trap at the bottom draining the dishwasher with the waste pipe just loosely hanging in a loop in the standpipe. There seems to be bad smells coming the dishwasher although not from inside the dishwasher itself but seems to be from the plumbing behind. Do you know what the problem might be?

Don't think I can do this as the trap also incorporates the boiler condensate pipe. The plumbers who fitted the new kitchen, bathroom and boiler really did a crap job, could have done better myself. The pipework under the kitchen sink looks like a jungle. Just a quck one, Al. When I empty my washing machine pump filter at the bottom front of my washer, I get about a pint of water. I shouldn't be getting that much, should I? Clothes are spun fine, no excess water in them. Cheers!

Can you give me some advice please? My washing smells I've cleaned the drum using bleach and white vinegar on a boil wash it seems to work for a few washes then the smell comes back. Ive checked and cleaned the waste pipe but I noticed a pool of water in the drum after the washer wasn't used for a week. I have the same setup as in your first drawing. Is it possible the waste sink water is flowing down the washer waste and settling in the drum? Cheers Steve.

Hi, a quick question. You know the drainage pipe from the washing machine, that should expel water from the washing machine out the wall once the washing machine is being drained. My washing machine has had a really bad smell so I decided to get a new one, I disconnected the old washing machine so the washing machine waste pipe isn’t connected right now until I get a new one. It appears the water from the sink is going into the washing machine drainage pipe... is this supposed to happen? And is this why my washing machine had a pungent smell and wasn’t draining properly? If you could help would be perfect!

Hiya I've got a drain company coming out tomorrow. The toilet manhole drain is nice and clear for once( I've been here 10 years and have had it bunged up right to the top about 5 times now) anyway my main problem is my dirty water from the washing machine is coming up into my sink. Is it a big drain job? I've unscrewed my u bend and that's clear. Thanks x

I have one of those little buggers, and not only does my sink fill up, but I'm positive that some of it then drains back into the washing machine? As I type, my kitchen is flooded. Ha! I've had a blocked soil pipe, in the past, and I think I've issues with it, again? But I've always thought that washing machines had a valve that stopped water backflowing into it, from the hose?

@loafersheffield
@loafersheffield 3 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by "washer"? Do you mean washing machine? Trap seal loss is usually due to suction of one appliance or piece of sanitaryware running in common with others. Ideally, each piece of sanitaryware ( toilet, basin, bath,shower, wash mac, shower tray, sink, etc) should have it's own separate run, but it's not always possible. That's where aav's come in as useful. If waste pipe runs terminate in hoppers outside the house where the roof surface discharge pies run in common, this is not usually a problem. If you have an internal soil stack, boxed in, inside the house, common in newer properties, I'd try and find the vent part of the 4" pipe. It may well be the case that whomsoever installed the plumbing did not even put a vent section in, nor soil AAV in. That may explain why you're getting trap seal loss.
