I think filler injections to the face should be done with ultrasound guidance for safety and peace of mind.. In my opinion the Ultrasonography-guided Cannula Method for Hyaluronic Acid Filler would put a lot of worries to rest. And as a patient I would definitely opt for a doctor who has this equipment and uses this method. The technology exists so why aren’t all doctors using it? An ultrasound machine can’t be that expensive. I would pay extra for fillers to be safe and not risk my eyesight. Im sure others would agree.

Dr. Cal, is there a way to use these arterial paths to stimulate or increase blood flow to the eye for patients with glaucoma where eyes aren't getting adequate supply of blood and thereby causing blindness or tunnel vision? Has there any study being done on this that you're aware of?

Hi Alfrin - very astute question. The pressure of the injection causes the arterial flow to reverse briefly, allowing the HA (or other filler) to flow into the ophthalmic artery. Remember, these facial arteries are very small, and the blood pressure in them is a fraction of the normal systemic blood pressure...
