Another reason why people don't do skincare is because it can become expensive, so I think cheaper brands (instead of skinceuticals) should be recommended, there are a lot of great products out there that offer the same ingredients they do.

At the beginning of my 'skincare journey' I used to buy too many products, confused by so many suggestions I found online. I have gradually reduced the number of products: in the morning: cleansing + ascorbic acid serum + sunscreen. In the evening: cleansing + retinal + moisturizer. That's it. 👌

I fell off my skincare routine a year or so ago because my mental health got bad and I just didn’t have the energy or motivation to wash my face in the morning anymore. I’m trying to get back into the routine but it’s rough. Definitely going to try micellar water and cotton pads to see if that’s easier to consistently do than wash my face at the sink.

Impeccable timing! My husband has recently asked me if he should be doing more for his skin (he does nothing other than moisturiser after his shower). Good to hear I’ve been giving the right advice. Spf in the morning and washing his face at night. Not consistent right now but getting there and I’m trying not to nag 😅

30 years ago in high school chemistry I learned that soap is soap bc it captures dirt by forming *_micelles_* around the dirt particles. So, in essence, micellar water (water with *_micelles)_* is just soapy water. With a little luck the factory at least used 'purified' water (before adding the soapy bits), but still, it's just soapy water in a cute bottle that you throw your money away for Btw, that's also why you need moisturiser afterwards, bc soap dehydrates the skin. Yes there are 'skin hydrating soaps' but those are soaps with hydrating additives. Pure soap, the soapy molecules that form micelles, are *_dehydrating_* the skin
@DrSamEllis
@DrSamEllis 10 ай бұрын
Hi! It’s a bit more nuanced than that because not all “soap” is the same. Some surfactants (the soapy molecules you refer to) are gentle enough to be left on the skin without causing irritation or dehydration. If someone prefers to wash their face with a traditional cleanser, I think that’s great too. We all have our own preferences and it’s nice to have options to suit a variety of needs.

I recently tried a Korean sunscreen you recommended (the one with centella). And 🙌🏻 you’re right, if you have a hard time putting sunscreen on, invest in one you enjoy. I always tried to remember to put on sunblock everyday but with this stuff, I get excited to put it on! It just blends so beautifully and smells so fresh too!

Hi Dr. Ellis. Can you please do a video on simple skin care while in the backcountry (camping, river rafting trips, etc). I live in Colorado, am in my 40s, and spend the summers on rafting trips with my family. It’s so challenging to care for facial skin in those environments (cleansing, moisturizing, sunscreen). Product advice and tips would be so helpful for us active ladies! Thank you! 😊

My skincare routine for the last 20 years has been washing my face while in the shower with a soap free cleansing bar (I use the DermaVeen Daily Nourish Soap-Free Cleansing Bar) with a soft wash cloth, a few drops of jojoba oil after I've dried my face, sunscreen for sensitive skin in the morning - I live in Australia and in the skin cancer capital of the world and even though I have African ancestry and olive skin, I have always worn sunscreen and reapply to every exposed bits of skin every few hours if I'm outside or about to go back outside. At night, same routine (minus the sunscreen) - wash face in the shower, a few extra drops of jojoba oil and nothing else. I used to use the Clinique routine of cleanser, toner, moisturisers and then switched to Clarins in my 20's and while they are terrific products, they didn't suit me. I have eczema and I found everything I was putting on my face was causing me more issues. It was my doctor who suggested I ditch the expensive skin care routine and try something simple and recommended jojoba oil. I generally have dryish skin, but my face has some areas that can become very oily. I found the jojoba oil helped with the dry skin, but also kept my skin moisturised enough that the oily areas (forehead, nose and some areas on my cheeks) simply stopped being oily and toned down. The oil leaves my skin soft, subtle and most importantly, did not clog my pores and I also stopped getting eczema on my face. Completely. For my body, I add some jojoba oil to the CeraVe moisturiser and it has helped with my eczema and my flare-up's are now minor and easily dealt with with the cortisone cream I am prescribed for it, which I use only at night if it starts to become really itchy (usually back of my hands, and my knees). I used to get severe flare-up's that would be painful and uncomfortable on patches on my body. I don't have that any more and in the past, I was having to use the prescribed creams so often, now one tube lasts me for so long, I need to get a new script as the tube is still half full when it expires after 2 years! If I hadn't spoken to my doctor about my general skin care and issues I was having, I'd probably still be in the same place as I was over 20 years ago. I was so set on having this routine or beauty routine. But I didn't need it. I don't even need to wear foundation now most of the time, because my skin is now clear, without blemishes or spots. The most important thing is sunscreen. And simply finding something that works for each person.

Hi Sam, I will tell you why I wasn’t into skincare until one year ago. I have very, I mean VERY sensitive and reactive skin. I didn’t know that until I started to buy cleansers, face creams/serums and even foundations. I never had acne in my all life, bumps or other bad things. Maybe ones a month one pimple or so and that’s it. So my skin looks clean, even with no other issues. When I was in my early 20s I went into skincare. Everything I tried (from cheap to very expensive) made me break out badly and fast. So except a makeup remover I took a loooooong break from skincare (more then 15 years). Last year I wanted to try again to have a simple skincare regimen. Long story short I started to have samples from different brands in order to find something suitable for my skin. Again I had bad reactions from most of them or 0 improvement. Finally I found the good ones for me and I’m very happy. My skincare regimen is: a face cream, an eye cream, one serum, cleanser, micellar water, eye makeup remover, sunscreen and a chemical exfoliant (even for chemical exfoliants formula matters-ex.: I had a very bad reaction from Sunday Riley Good Genes all-in-one Lactic Acid and this one many people recommend for sensitive skin). One more thing to tell. I tried retinol and it took me over a month to get rid of dryness and huge bumps. Never again. Because I had a lot of problems due to my sensitive skin I read a lot about skincare and I applied retinol properly but didn’t help. Retinol is not for everybody and all derm doctors recommend it without an alternative for people like me. What I learned in my skincare journey: -never buy before testing -every skin is different and never buy only because somebody is telling you that a certain product is the best ever and you can’t go wrong with it -you don’t need 34556 steps in your skincare routine (keep it simple and add an extra step only if you have a special condition to treat) -you don’t need to spend a fortune to have a good skincare regimen -read the ingredients and learn about it -find your skin type (ex.: if the forehead is oily and the rest of the face is dry do not apply the same face cream for entire face) -if you started to use retinol/retinal/tretinoin and the “purging” period is longer then 5-6 weeks (and it gets worse with each passing week) it means is not purging and actually you have an allergic reaction and retinol is not for you -if you want to look the best invest in skincare first and then buy makeup (if the canvas is bad everything you put on will look bad) -if you have sensitive skin avoid skincare products with too many ingredients because the risk to have a bad reaction is higher and it will be hard to know what ingredient cause you an allergic reaction Thanks for sharing! XOXO

I think all of your suggestions are great, except I think there could be other factors involved to the “purging” or sensitivity of retinol. I think amount applied, frequency, and strength all play a part. If you start off slow (once a week), and use a low strength (.15 or .25) that is over the counter and not prescribed, and keep to a pea sized amount, you will have more success with retinol. I started back in February, and have graduated to .25 three times a week, and .15 twice a week, with 2 days rest. I’m fine gradually increasing strength or frequency every 2 weeks if I don’t have a reaction.

@@orchid51551 When I said in my previous message that I applied retinol properly it means I was informed about how to do it. So I did exactly how you described but it didn’t work for me. It’s good if it worked for you but unfortunately retinol is not tolerated by a percent of people including me.

2:06 well dr Sam, my reason used to be that I thought it was pointless and even tho i was having acne, painful bumps on my forehead because that would flare up every now and then- I really didn’t see the point and a big reason for that might be because i was taught wrong, my mom would force me to use a sa cleanser and would tell me to leave my skin as it is! And when i had only one option for a moisturizer that i really didn’t like, and mire over even after doing these things consistently i was not seeing results, so I thought skincare was a hobby more that anything, that certain lucky ppl can see results from in the long run. Ik realize that my problem might be that i can’t handle acid cleansers and instead im opting to use the adapalene gel. I learned that this condition is called dry acne- even tho my face and acne dont feel dry, i feel like somehow cleansers dry me out enough to over produce oils and so on and so forth. I would love to hear you talk abt this condition in details, you’re definitely the only one that could make it clear enough for anyone to understand, i love Dr Sam!!

I do use skincare now. The reason I didn’t was mainly how it felt. I have oily skin and things I had tried felt heavy and made my skin look like I had covered it in oil. It also felt like my skin was dirty. So all I used was a face wash and sometimes in winter a moisturiser. I only ever used suncream when I went on holiday. Now the formulas of products are better and light weight so feels like you have nothing on. Also I like Dr Sam stuff as you have 4 actives in one so I don’t need loads of products as I’m lazy and like things to be quick. Also I’m better informed about skincare and why to use it. I do agree that having budget friendly skincare will help people use stuff as not everyone can afford the high priced things.

I am a skin care junkie but my husband would only wash his face with a bar of soap and call it a day for years. I finally was able to make him start on his skin care when I got him Naturium products. His skin is very oily so he can wash his face with a dish soap and still feel oily. So I started him with one product from Susan, her salicylic acid serum. Then introduced niacinamide gel cream 5%. He hates cream consistency so a gel texture worked perfect for him. And finally, I am so happy, he started using a sunscreen that he liked, also from Naturium. The new matte finish UV reflect antioxidant was the one he liked because it is liquidy and does not leave a cast or dewiness. I think for my husband texture is everything so it took me a while to get the right products. Naturium variety of products plus their commitment to sustainability was a selling point for him. Thank you for this video I will keep looking for good products for my picky husband.

My husband only brushes his teeth at night and just mouth wash in the morning which personally I find not enough. He doesnt hardly ever wear sunscreen unless he is going in the pool and his skincare routine is non existant. I have tried getting him little things to try because he is so dry and crusty and has a lot of sun damage as a frequent gardener who doesnt sunscreen. He just hates having anything on his skin and doesnt see the benefit to any of it.

My sister and whole family really refuses the sunscreen because it stings the eyes… I find that annoying but it got better with a tinted one. I also find that my moisturizer stings the eyes a little bit as well, and I have noticed that my eyebrows are never too happy that I’m applying so many creams on my face (it’s like they shed more or are more sensitive than they were before). Note: I use Nivea moisturizers for now, and been trying different sunscreens. These topics I said here are what discourages me in general, and demoralizes me in recommending skincare to anyone. I stick with it because I hope I’m doing good for my skin, but these sensations of stinginess and discomfort with the eyebrows make me wonder if my own skin would also be happier with nothing at all. I have one of those reeally sensitive skin types, tried rosehip oil and it made my skin get very uncomfortable, almost like an allergic reaction 😢

I use my retinoid before moisturizer so it is closer to my skin and doesnt have a barrier blocking it from doing the most work possible. I put moisturizer on top to seal it in. Ive heard that sandwiching the retinoids can help when experiencing irritation so moisturize then retinoid then moisturize.

If you're new and sensitive to retinol, you can apply a thin layer of moisturiser first, then retinol and again moisturiser. This is the sandwich method.

Because these things have no hard rules and depends on the formula, circumstances, personal opinion and interpretation. Plenty of micellar waters state on the package that you do not have to rinse them off, some do say to rinse off. If you are hiking and use it to clean you face - it makes sense that using water would be inconvenient and make it essentially useless. If you wear a ton of makeup and just use micellar water - it would make sense to follow up eith water and preferably a proper cleanser too to truly clean everything. Some waters have bare bones ingredients and appropriate pH, some have a ton of fragrances and what not in them with too high of a pH.
