My Dad passed away in 2093 in my arms from an aortic aneurysm. I play this every morning and night. Great man. Dropped out of school in the 9th grade. Could not read or write. Started a small business in 1957 on the Philadelphia waterfront. Supported his entire family and the business just sold for 3 billion dollars. Great "Old Man". Miss you Dad

I saw the Irish Tenors in concert a few months ago, and Ronan Tynan sang this song. He did a very good job with it (the lady sitting next to me, who'd never heard it before, was in tears), but for me, John's version is better, because it feels so much more intimate and personal.

My dear old dad died in 2014, and a friend from my Air Force days sent this to me. I still cry every time I hear it. I never will forget him, for he made me what I am. Though he may be gone, memory lingers on, and I miss him, my old man.

I have seen John with the tenors and many more times solo. No matter how many times, when he sings the Old Man, you can hear a pin drop except for the sniffling sounds of everyone crying. The feeling he puts into this song is unbelieveable. John sings straight from his heart.

@@karenguiden6685 So very sorry for the loss of your Dad at such a young age. My Mom died at only 52 so I completely know how much pain and grief is in your heart. The best thing about music is that it can help ease the pain somewhat and light up all the memories that live on in your heart for that missing loved one. John's renditions of The Old Man are by far the best. His whole heart is in the song and you can hear it in his voice and see it on his face. God's blessings to you and your family. May only good things come to all of you!

If there are any Sons or Daughters out there looking at this comment. FATHERS are special. All the times spent together all the memories there is such a loss when there gone. You remember things that happen with your own kids. And smile remembering this is what happened with my Dad my Father passed on my birthday its a real tough day, 13 years later to this day. Also the same goes for Moms out there as well. Always remember Moms or Dads you have only 1 or both and when it happens if feels like getting hit by a car 🚗 surviving and then getting hit again with a train and surviving . Make every day special make as many memorys as you can Trust me on this

This is the most beautiful song, delivered with such clarity and sincerity--the color of the pheasant as he rises in the gong, (? the gong?) ,how to fish, and make a wish...Always reminded me of MY Uncle-as My Uncle and Aunt made ME what I am....but as a writer, needing SINGERS to sing my songs, I HEAR AND SEE THIS IS THE BEST LIFE HAS TO OFFER- unfortunately, it's about "death", but in death we are prepared to see it as just a "transfer "to Heaven! Right? The $$ producers$$$ made John McDermott perform this same song several more " attempts' and NONE have topped this original one-
