The water in Derren's glass mysteriously lowers from 0:40 to 0:42 then raises again. What might have happened was that during the actual trick Derren might have slipped a card or something, and then after the trick he filmed that little section to make it look cleaner. You might also notice that you can't see Matt in that shot, that's because he had left, in other shots you can see him.

I suspect that maybe in the original take, he muddled up what he was trying to say or something wrong with the audio that they had to go back and film that bit again after Matt left which is why it’s also zoomed in a bit more than when the glass is full

Here's my guess: Perhaps before the shuffle, Derren asks Matt to name 3 cards off the top of his head... but we don't see that part. Then, while Matt does the shuffle, Derren grabs those three cards from his pocket (or gets them from under the table, etc). When Matt slides the 3 random cards across the table, Derren switches them for the cards Matt has already said (:40). Derren puts the three cards on the table and asks "what's the first card?" We (the audience) understand this to be the first time Matt is saying the name of a card, but Matt understands this as Derren asking him to restate the name of the first card-- which he as already said. And so on...

What has happened here is a narrative coverage shot, to clarify part they didn't want being ambiguous; this was probably shot after and cut in, but this does not mean Matt was told what to choose. Editing happens for all sorts of reasons and it is one reason Derren enjoys performing live most - See him live and any doubt of his honesty and high skill level will be removed, I assure you.

I think the last part is someone below the table puts the three cards in an envelope and passes it up to Derren who then slips them through the back side of the wallet making it look like he's extracting them from the wallet and then the envelope is given to Matt. Think maybe the first part of the trick is also person under the table passing up the card as Matt calls them out and Derren somehow palms them onto the table via that stuff he does with writing down each card as it is called by Matt.

I know Derren is a master at card magic especially when it comes to slight of hand. He plays it off as mental psychological stuff but that almost minimizes the impressive stuff he can do with cards. Okay, since Derren is a mentalist, I'm guessing he's swapping the chosen cards for a predetermined set of three (the suit error is an intentional red-herring) and then suggesting each card subliminally. Don't have a clue about how he'd go about doing that, though. Alternatively, Derren Brown is actually the Devil and has mystical demonic powers. Cool trick, either way!

Building on this, Darren also describes the full deck to Matt by noting that "All the four six are there." He says this at four seconds in ( 0:04 ). As we all know, there are 52 cards in a standard deck, and there's no reason for him to state these numbers, save for suggesting them. I imagine the incorrect nature of the numbers might also make them stand out in some manner. I almost want to say that his emphasis on three is to imply the three dots on the clubs suit, but I'm not 100% on that. He most certainly suggests the clubs suit early on, however. Especially since both of the numerical cards have that same suit. His banter about the car keys and characters are another red herring. By this point, I believe that Matt should already have the appropriate cards in mind. I think that the whole "I am going to play mind games with you," environment would also be counterintuitive to suggestion. If anything, he's just keeping matt thinking from the subconscious. I think the order of the cards are irrelevant, since he orders them out *after* Matt has declared those first two, allowing him to rearrange them if at all necessary. He can rearrange the third card as well, since wherever the first two are positioned, the third card defaults to the remaining spot. I think he suggests the Jack only after the first two cards are chosen, though that could be wrong. I could get into stereotype territory here and suggest that a jewish bar mitzvah is possibly suggestive of a wealthy boy (ie: Jack of diamonds). The fallback being of course that if he associates it more with family love, he is in turn able to stick to the hearts and simply keep the other jack hidden. I say fallback, because if this were a guaranteed part of the trick, he would have introduced the envelope at the start. But since it comes at the end, it can simply not be declared.
