What I love about Derren Brown is that his brand of magic "seems" real. You can find "revealed" videos all over KZbin explaining how various magic tricks were done. Derren Brown's magic is different. It defies that kind of explanation. If you watch a lot of Derren Brown, you'll notice that very often his tricks aren't quite perfect - which enhances the illusion that it's not magic. When predicting 3 or 4 cards, and all of them are right except for one - and that one is just the wrong suit or one number off. The audience then believes that it IS really mentalism. He's a genius. It's magic with a "mentalist" angle. His explanation that he plants ideas into people's head is just part of the theater. I don't believe it. It simply wouldn't work often enough to be reliable. Even if 20% of the people didn't take his suggestion, that's failing an awful lot.

I am almost certain based on the way he handled the first (blue) deck that that after 12 or so cards on the bottom, it was all 4 of hearts. 1:58 he did not shuffle the bottom 1/3rd or so of the deck into the rest when he shuffled. 2:07 he only shows us the bottom 10 cards (the part he didn't shuffle into the rest). 2:10 he did a false cut which left the part of the deck he showed us up right at the beginning of the spread, where the spread was much denser. 2:15 his gesture for telling martin how to choose a card made it clear not to stop right at the beginning. as for the 43 part, this is my guess. I bet when he gave them the envelope (may or may not actually been a week before) he privately told her something like _"think of any number between one and 52, whatever number you choose, in the show later, a card randomly selected by Martin will be at that location. what number do you want?"_ . he impresses upon her that this is her number for the trick. he then sets up a deck with the 4 of hearts at that location. she doesn't feel like a stooge, because the trick is still very impressive to her because martin apparently chose a card randomly. at 5:33 notice how Daren does not say "think of any number between one and 52" he says "you have in your mind a number between 1 and 52".

The odds are actually higher than 1 in 52. Most people don't pick 1 or 52. 13 is an unpopular number. Odd numbers are picked more than even numbers. Numbers divisable by 10 are less popular as well.

Even if all of the first deck were 4Hs, it may not have been 43 cards in (Amanda could've picked any number between 1 and 52). All the cards in the second deck had to be a proper set as we seen her turning each one over. So assuming the first deck was a random, complete set and that 43 was a number that Amanda randomly picked out, I've no idea how he done this. If you ever get the chance, go see him live! The Answer: The number is not significant and there is no mind influence here. The trick is done when the stagehands bring the table out. Derren already knows what card is placed at each number in the envelope deck, she could have picked any number and the trick would have worked. When Amanda says 43 Derren knows No 43 in that deck is 4 Hearts. Backstage he has 52 decks pre-made each with mostly the same card. At this point the stagehands know to place the 'mostly' 4 Hearts deck on the table and bring it out. Derren shows Martin a small spread of 'different cards' from the deck then flips them around in his hand and spreads them all face down, @2:23 you will see the 'different cards' all bunched together at one end under a stack so Martin can't put his finger on them, every other card in the deck is 4 Hearts. They finish by going through and counting the deck numbers off till 43 and 4 Hearts is there as expected. If Amanda had said 12, Derren would have recited what card lay at 12, say 8 Spades and the stagehands would have brought out the 'mostly' 8 Spades deck and so on...

Derren shows the top few cards from the deck of card that Freeman has to choose from to Freeman (and the camera) but I'm pretty sure only the top few are different cards and that every card after that is the 4 of hearts. In order to make sure Freeman chose one of the cards towards the bottom of the pile he uses suggestion and puts emphasis on certain words. For example at 2:16 when he goes "You're *going* to bring your finger along and *bring it down* to ANY card that you like", all the while making a an effort to point more directly towards the cards towards the bottom of the pile in order to influence Freeman's decision. He does it again when he goes "do you wan to go up a bit, DOWN A BIT - KEEP GOING?" which would make it less likely for Freeman to change his mind and go upwards. As for the other deck, I haven't a fucking clue.

It looked like Martin was in on it but Amanda wasn't. Just based on the difference in their surprised expressions at the end. It's almost as if Martin was told to "pick the 4 of hearts" (before the show, and not tell Amanda - AND also if you take a screenshot of 2:14 and also one of 2:26, the layout of cards was very different.... so I believe this was shot multiple times, and on the second take, all the cards faced down were all the 4 of hearts) and then Derren did his "I'm-going-to-make-you-pick-the-number-I-want-you-to-pick" thing to Amanda, and that's how the trick was completed. I've done similar to my friends whilst having coffee at a cafe but because I'm not on TV, my friends are allowed to pick up my fake deck to see how things were done....

The key moment in this trick, which was edited out of the TV broadcast, is when Amanda reveals her number for the first time shortly after stepping onto the stage - a stagehand then knows which one of fifty-two possible decks they should place on the table to be bought out. Each of the fifty-two decks would be made of up of the same card, with perhaps 7-10 indifferent cards - it’s the indifferent cards that Martin sees, which is enough to convince him the deck is ordinary. Derren’s long, emotive story - a story which may be entirely fabricated - is what helps cause earlier events to be forgotten, particularly those which are not perceived as being significant at the time (i.e. the first reveal of the number).

The first deck is made up of 90% 4 of hearts. There are a few mixed cards at the bottom of the deck. He keeps them there with a fake cut and uneven shuffle. He does another fake cut right before he spreads them out. Watch it frame by frame. There is always an 8 of clubs on the bottom. He has the guy pick a 4 by bypassing the mixed cards which get laid down first by having him move his finger from beginning to end, bypassing the mixed cards into the 4 of hearts section of the deck. He even places the mixed cards first and close together to discourage the choosing of one. That is only half of the trick. He is also social engineering. The wife told him 43 before hand because he proposed the grift to her as a little bit of fun at her husband's expense for the benefit of cancer. Who would say no? He even pokes some fun at Martin at the beginning to maintain the spirit of this being a little trick on her husband. The deck he sent to her and told her not to open was stacked from the beginning. Most magicians have a full card deck stack order they use regularly memorized. Once he knew which number she picked he new the card at the 43 position, then filled 90% of the first deck with that card (4 of hearts). Martin picks the 4 of hearts because it's basically the only choice in the first deck, which in turn, is the card indexed at the 43rd position when they count up in the "sealed" stacked deck. Everyone involved besides Darren is amazed by some part of the process, so to them it is still magic.

For the first part of the trick, it was touched upon quiet excessively below in the comments (most of deck was 4 of hearts and it was shuffled and spread to be easily picked). However, as for guessing the number 43, I have no clue, except for the moments he, rather obviously, emphasized the number 9 twice at 3:00 and 3:14. The only correlation to the number 43 is that 52-9=43. Just a thought!

If she was in fact just a random person, he could have arranged the show to be postponed and he could have placed a lot of posters with the number 43, they might have played a song with the number 43 (or 4 and 3), price for the ticket could have ended at 43 or some other subliminal stuff. He got (seemingly) random person to think of a song and got a band to play it in front of him, and he showed that the whole day he hammered that song in that guys head - he had a lot of references to the title, at his job his "colleague" (who was Derren Brown btw xD) was whistling the song, so he made the guy *think* of a song he wanted him to think of (and the dude had basically endless amount of choices). Taking that into consideration, I think that making someone think of a number in specific range was much easier task :P

Slight of hand. He took the 4 of hearts from Martin and pocketed it, and then placed it in the deck (which was edited out) into position 43 - which is still bloody hard to do especially without anyone seeing it, but definitely the only way this could have been done.

+TheDct88 when he shuffles the 1st deck, he leaves out a small subset of cards being shuffled at every turn. these are the only cards that he shows face up and these are the only distinct cards. the others could all be 4 of hearts. the last card, spades one is shown to us deliberately to clear our doubts if all of them are the same.it creates the illusion that all are different. he's counting on the fact that freeman wouldn't choose the first card (spades) or the last few cards that are different. I may very well be wrong.this is just a guess
