The most plausible explanation is usually the correct one and as much as we know how this was achieved, the fact that it was done on live television is incredible

It's a split screen. The right half is live, the left half is a static image hiding a person switching the numbers out as they're being called. Also, notice how the framing seems to be moving somewhat erratically? They've tried to make it look like it was being filmed by a cameraman, when really the camera is completely static (has to be for the split screen to work). They achieved this by zooming in slightly on the video output, then apply an effect that randomly moves the picture about, giving a "handheld" effect, (except the movement is too linear and just doesn't look right). The person switching out the balls moves out of shot and they fade the static image down just before the camera pans across and zoom's in for the reveal.

I'm guessing some kind of split screen effect. I still think it was pretty impressive though. I was flicking between the lottery show on BBC1 and his show on channel 4, it certainly had me baffled at the time and even now it still looks just as cool. Deception of our brains is the name of the game, and Derren is the Master.

Yeah, it’s a split screen, the lottery is also on a delay, so he likely had a producer giving the numbers before they showed up (although, he could have made it much cooler with this technique, but he’d have to get a waiver for HIS delay, which is probably difficult)

4:10 is the EXACT moment the left half of the screen freezes for a moment before going back to real time. Beforehand there is constant swaying of the handheld camera but at 4:10 it is motionless for a few moments, proving a split screen was used (even though Derren said it wasn't a split screen but this was cheeky misdirection!)

Also the way he says "we are live at this point" and he points directly down towards where he is standing does make your theory seem more likely. As he is suggesting that only the part where he is stood is live.

I remember watching this live and being so amazed, its obviously split screen, If you pause the video at 4:05 and the press your right arrow key you will notice that the very left side ball actually is in a different position at 4:10(one right arrow click from 4:05) to as it was in 4:05. the ball seems to be slightly higher. so between 4:05 and 4:10 the split screen is removed

You can actually see the split screen at one point. That’s also why the camera work is wobbly as it hides the effect better than a still camera shot.

A very clever and actually very easy camera trick... the camera is static on a tripod, with artificial wobble to give the illusion of movement.... the left side of the screen is frozen static... where in reality somebody is standing with a lineup of all the number balls at hand... as the numbers are being drawn... he simply puts the correct balls in place of the blank white ones.... once they are drawn, he quickly disappears off camera and the left side of the screen becomes active again... Thus selling the illusion... I remember seeing this on tv and figuring this is how it was done.

The camera movements aren’t digital because you can see the perspective changes as the wide lense moves acthe screen. The camera motions are a motorized pan and tilt camera machine which has a predetermined series of movements made during the pre live shot of the balls, and the live showing. Everything else you said is correct though

It was a split screen trick! Look how number 39 does not line up! The balls were placed in the stand very quickly as they were announced behind a spilt screen. The pre recorded balls were faded in after he walked to the other side of the screen.. Then faded out as he said number 23... watch the fake camera wobble.....Very Clever. Well done Derren! The usual way of doing "predictions" is for the magician (or assistant) to have access to the item at a time you don't think they have access to it. In this case the audience is getting it only via video, so the opp'ties for that sort of access to the props are plenty.

The trick is the delay in the broadcast. Live tv has a delay just in case swear words or violent stuff happens, they can cut of the broadcast. He managed to bypass that delay allowing him to hear the numbers beforehand. That's my guess

Yeah the delay is the core of it - someone would have been in the studio and called his team from there. They still had to split the screen for someone to write the numbers on the balls though, hence why he stays perfectly still

I think what Derren has done is freeze the left side of the screen while an assistant puts the balls in order in which they appear. and that the camera shake was added using software rather than it actually shaking. Then after the balls were drawn they unfreeze the frame where seemingly nothing has happened, but the balls are now in the correct possition. not saying thats correct just a theory and what I would do if I was to replicate this.

Actually the camera shake is not added post production but is done by using motorized tripods, so that you have an parallax effect. The movement of the camera is predefined. Before the live stream those predefined camera movements recorded the empty room so that in the live stream a still image could be added on the left side with both the same shake and parallax effect as recorded in the live stream. A helper then changes the balls in the left side of the picture. You can see the motorized tripods in the beginning, but you can't see themn in this video

I could have done this in imovie. Since there was nothing moving on the left side of the screen for the entire video, you could have a still picture replace the left side while someone places the correct balls there, then go back to the video while they are out of the shot, and allow him to walk over there and show us the numbers. I would have believed it if he had showed us his numbers first

He needs to be perfectly still for the 6 main numbers as they are running 2 video feeds, one is a still image of the balls, the other is with him on screen and a producer writing on the balls. Had he moved, they couldn’t blend the image of the balls on the left, so the illusion is broken. The camera trick it used often for things, but movements need to be very precise

The lotto is broadcast 30 second after it's drawn give time for a split screen to fade in and someone to place the right balls on the rack. The problem is when the screen fades back one of these balls is level and so give the TRICK away. The fade out is harder to spot but the fade back happens at about 4:07 finishing about 4:11 when the first ball as moved. Strange the Darren claim no camera trick when clearly it is!

I know how he did it. Really simple if you think about it. The balls are electronic numbers, but made to look like they have black numbers written on them (note we don't get a true close up of the balls). So he gets the numbers, and an assistant behind the scene just punches them into the balls and voila! Sorry I found you out Derren!

You see the balls before the lottery drawing, but only the blank back. Derren said it's because "we can't legally show you the numbers before they are actually drawn". Does that sound logical? About a minute after the drawing THEN he turns them around and Voila! they match. I figured out it's electronic balls and someone just punched in the numbers.

It's been proven that it was a split screen. FACT. And I know why. There's a clue right there when he tries to put the balls back n their places they had been in the hot studios lights which meant they expanded and didn't quite fit. That might be vortex maths. Basically there are only 9 numbers, so numbers like 19 = 10 (1+9=10), and 1+0=1, so 19=1.
