Derrick Bolt Torque Inspection by Rope Access

Hi. In this short video, I'll show you how we do the derrick bolt inspection on an offshore drilling rig using rope access. We do visual inspection and manually checking that the bolts are tight to correct torque requirements. This inspection is part of the periodic inspection of drilling rigs as per API RP 4G.

Good video again. You mention you are not the L3 on the job. Do you work with an L3 and under IRATA/SPRAT or a similar scheme? I know you are not asking for it and you have to make do with the gear supplied to you, and some unsolicited advice ;-)... You could say that you should only use gear as specified by the manufacturer to your client. So no shunt as a backup. Just tie a butterfly, clip in and you're good to go. And for small transfer like your friend is doing you only need 3 points during the transfer. It looks like a small rope to rope, but the video might make it look smaller than what it was... Hi. Thanks for the comments. Yes, we do work with a L3 and we are under IRATA. I voiced out my concern to the L3 about the shunt being not suitable as a backup device. We are actually renting all our gears and the owner of the RA equipment replaced the shunt with the DUCK for us.

If you are irata, don' t show this video on YT. Your supervisor can have troubles. This isn' t irata techniques on this video. You have no rope protectors,you have no clothes, life jackets , safety zones and many more

Hi. We are not working directly over water so there is no need for life jacket. About no safety zone, we were working on the derrick and the rig floor down below is designated as a permanent red zone. We had the work permits, pre-job meeting with the rig crew, etc.. If you ever worked in a drilling rig, you should know what permanent red zones mean. Anyway, I do appreciate your comments and I do agree that our gear and techniques are no way perfect and there is always room for improvement.

Your torque wrench too small for derrick bolt torque!i am sure u dont know what is the torque value and just doing it for the sake of video!!!

Have you ever heard of the tool called torque multiplier? Go ahead and google it.

@gmiemenace4288 You just hit your own ignorance wall. The guys in the video are using a torque multiplier tool together with the small torque wrench. It is impractical and even impossible to use a big torque wrench in that kind of job. If only a torque wrench, it will need to be at least 6-foot-long handle to torque those derrick bolts to specs.
