Another spell in the forest near our home, north of Seoul.
This is one of my favorite songs ever, from any time, place, or genre.
Derroll Adams was a profoundly talented songwriter and banjoist--and this is one of his gems.
I've listened to it countless times, and it still never fails to move me.
It moves me more like a classic religious text than a song, though.
Not because it isn't a wonderful song--it is--but rather because it is also one of the best poems I've ever read about a mystical experience--with a very zen-influenced lesson or un-lesson.
you could say first there is a mountain
then it seems the mountain's gone
but then if you take another look
she's been there all along
you can be just like that river
as she laughs along her way
or just stand beneath the shadows
that take the sun away
--Derroll Adams
