One of my favorite lines from the show, when the lead girl isn't allowed wear a Jacket instead of her uniform but, the other girl shows up wearing a jacket and says "Well I'm not going to be individual on my own!" Haha Just how innocent it is is so funny!

I consider that really good character introduction. It’s funny as a bonus. Like “this isn’t Nam, it’s bowling, there are rules”. Those kind of lines let you know where the character’s head is and you can infer a backstory.

@@skatergrl13Dylan is a mixture of James and Orla. He didn't go to a school for autistic and dyslexic students purely because of his dyslexia, that is pretty obvious to other autistics, and he has dropped enough clues in newspaper interviews at this point when describing his childhood. He is great to have out there visible at least to fellow auties, being successful and loved by colleagues, helps make up for Elon Musk being autistic 😅

Dylan WTF?! You can’t say such personal info about an actress! That was so cringy.
@smaragdinepearl54392 жыл бұрын
Agreed it shouldn’t have been said, but I can see how he probably wasn’t aware that this sort of thing is more personal (nowadays everyone’s very open - maybe not where they are though perhaps), and was simply trying to get in a word and be part of the interview. He was trying to play into the story but didn’t realise perhaps and you can see he’s truly embarrassed for revealing that later - his intention wasn’t to harm or oust :)
@compulsiverambler13522 ай бұрын
Not so cringey, the girls' reactions indicate that they understood the innocent intent and are used to the way his brain works, and luckily Saoirse seems not to be the type of person to care about people knowing that, as she evidently wasn't mortified, or she wouldn't have prolonged the audience picturing it with the "no it didn't hurt" comment. Just a textbook example of caetextia ("context blindness"), right down to the realisation quickly afterwards when the delayed accessing of relevant background knowledge finally occurs. The relevant background knowledge including: other people here don't already know about the piercing; they will know as a result of me completing the funny story; people sometimes don't want strangers knowing they have a piercing. Such "obvious" pieces of background information are in the brain but in dynamic situations like conversation they get accessed and processed with a delay, in people with a monotropic, "context-blind" brain type. Sadly it got called "autism" decades ago and that etymologically misleading term has stuck, and is hard to get rid of at this point. I am proud to say as an autie, it is pretty obvious that Dylan is in this category, to anyone who has the same brain type and has spent time around many other real people with it, from a wide range of indicators that are not bad things but are often neutral or positive traits characteristic of autism. Just for example, characteristic hypotonic body posture, subtle stimmy mannerisms and less neurotypical-passing stims like bouncing on the spot. "Dylan stop jumping" in GBBO was a very relatable moment, a bit of a jab in the heart. In interviews in newspapers you only have to read between the lines, he is dropping hints at it strongly enough for those with any experience of it, e.g. describing his special school as being for children with autism and dyslexia (the school itself does not mention autism specifically in its website, just Developmental Language Disorder, so choosing to mention that many of the students are autistic despite that not actually being the school's focus is interesting) and talking about being lonely and unable to make friends at school, being shy in all but small manageable groups, etc. When put together, these are not subtle ways of identifying yourself to other autistic people who will read your interviews and be inspired by your success. But subtle enough to avoid discrimination from casting directors, as there's a myth that all autistic people can't make or read facial expressions and so can't be good actors. And the infantilising way he gets interacted with and spoken about, for better or worse, by colleagues and interviewers, it is a dead giveaway. Most neurotypicals have better autism radar than they realise, it is just that they don't know that the adults they have this strong urge to take under their wing are the same category of person that experts call "autistic". They don't recognise this "little lost lamb" quality, as they experience it, as the condition they have heard talked about as "autism", due to the inaccurate popular culture association between autism and cold, Spock-like personalities.
