@@cobbler9113 To be fair, a Catholic calling the police over paramilitary violence in 90s Northern Ireland, would be like a black woman calling the cops to report racially motivated or sexist violence in 40s America. They don't care that you're a noncombatant, you're part of the same social or ethnic group so cops will kill or arrest you too.

But, I had no GPS as the mechanic had hidden the instruction book under the spare tyre, for safety; on my first day I turned down the volume on the radio and returned to the hire to adjust the speakers, as I I thought the radio was broken; and because I couldn't find a room in Drogheda where I'd travelled to from Belfast to photograph the head of St Oliver Plunkett, whose head is encased in a glass cabinet on the alter of the church; then I drove around the town looking for accommodation and couldn't locate any rooms; it was sad to have travelled so far, only to return to Belfast...

During this time there was a civil conflict in northern Ireland it was nationalists, those who want to be irish and are catholic versus unionists those who want to be british and are protestant. Basically the guy is part of IRA (irish republican army) and he's trying to run away from northern Ireland to Ireland. Since the Main characters are catholic they simpathize with him. This is a very complicated topic so I'm not sure I explained very well but there are lots of videos about the troubles on KZbin

Because back then the police force, the RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary) was basically 99% Protestant. They were corrupt as hell, they sat back and allowed Protestant mobs to burn scores of Catholic families out of their homes in Belfast. They murdered unarmed Irish Republicans at checkpoints. Those miserable pricks would have taken “Emmett” away and shot him if they didn’t just go ahead and kill him on the spot. And because Erin’s family is Catholic they would have used it as an excuse to arrest them as well.

@@gezzaschannel Going by great grand dads and mentioning the black and tans, I'd say that you have a warped sense of history. The original pre-split IRA of the early 20th century were different from the the troubles IRA factions. The old IRA were recognised as the official army of Ireland by the Dail pre-treaty. Educate yourself.

Fra ruger I think you mean when he says, “They’ll not bother with the likes of us.” He’s reassuring them that they won’t get caught because the army and R.U.C. were busy doing other things on The Twelfth.

Jamie O’Connor Because he needed to get across the border ASAP. Loyalists (Protestants) didn’t have to worry about that because the british army frequently colluded with Loyalist paramilitary groups. But our boys in the IRA sometimes had to go on the run and they would often cross the border to the Free State.

@@westbrit1020 The Irish Civil War, 28 June 1922 - 24 May 1923) was a conflict that followed the Irish War of Independence and accompanied the establishment of the Irish Free State, an entity independent from the United Kingdom but within the British Empire. The civil war was waged between two opposing groups, the pro-treaty Provisional Government and the anti-treaty IRA, over the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The forces of the Provisional Government (which became the Free State in December 1922) supported the Treaty, while the Republican opposition saw it as a betrayal of the Irish Republic (which had been proclaimed during the Easter Rising). Many of those who fought on both sides in the conflict had been members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) during the War of Independence. The Civil War was won by the Free State forces, who benefited from substantial quantities of weapons provided by the British Government. The conflict may have claimed more lives than the War of Independence that preceded it, and left Irish society divided and embittered for generations. Today, two of the main political parties in the Republic of Ireland, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, are direct descendants of the opposing sides of the war. Unfortunately to fight tyranny one must become like the tyrants.

@Cissy - No , but the UVF ( and the rest of the alphabet soup of nasty Loyalist Gangs in the North ) and At a pinch the Black and Tans would qualify , but what you don't grasp is that their violence was reactive if a self appointed bunch of fanatics and all round bad guy's hadn't started the murder and mayhem the would not have done what they did . And don't bother cut and pasting Wiki or whatever on Irish History ,I am sure I know at least as much as you , the difference is I actually understand it
