I love Clare, and was surprised to find out that not only is Nicola from Galway, she's also 32 playing 16, and she doesn't look it!😮She also learned her Derry accent from Girls Aloud's Nadine!😹

I love how you used a Galway girl impersonating a Derry accent as an example of a Derry accent. To be fair, her accent is dead on. You should maybe give lessons to that wee girl who plays Orla though

Agreed, it's on point - she put lots of effort into it to her credit. What's 'wrong' with Orla's accent? Were you able to watch the video when I analysed her speech?

Funny thing is that the father of the actress who plays Orla is from Derry, so I think she'd have tons of exposure to that accent, lol!

As I realize this video was posted over a year ago, my comment may have already been addressed and I just haven’t found it yet. That being said, I really enjoy the Derry accent and mimicking it while watching. The one aspect I’ve still yet to say successfully would be the last difference you spoke about. The pound and lousy diphthong. Can you make a video focusing solely on this? It seems my American tongue just can’t handle this. Thank you so much!

Hi, thank you for your detailed question. This is probably the trickiest (yet most distinct) aspect of the Derry accent, and across Northern Ireland. It sounds to me like there is still a diphthong in lousy but instead of the [au] diphthong it's more like an [ai] diphthong. It sounds like l[ai]sy instead of l[au]sy.

very strange that you don’t hear the diphthong in MOUTH (and FACE). not the same diphthong as in standard british english, but clearly diphthongs!
