I have the 76 Luminance and the two 36 sets of Lightfast and I must say I prefer the Derwent Lightfast for my artistic needs. I prefer to draw wildlife and I think the Lightfast colours lean more to my taste than the Caran D'Ache Luminance do. However, having said that, I did three portraits using the Luminance on Stonehenge paper and the colours were definitely suited to skin tones. I've used both the Lightfast and the Luminance for botanical work and the colours in both are so beautiful, I'm spoilt for choice! Once again, a brilliant video Harry.... thanks so much for all your hard work! It makes choosing art supplies so much easier! :)

Thanks for the review! These are mighty pricey, but if I learned something from my 120 Faber-Castell polychromos set is... I don't need THAT many colors. They don't really fit on the table, are hard to manage, and in the end I almost always use the same ones. I'm glad I bought the 120 set, because now I have it and enjoy it, and I learned from that lesson. For me, the best number is around 36. So I'm probably trying both of these and mixing them with my three star polychromos in my work.

Thanks Harry, this IS the review I've been waiting for! Your photos of the full 100 colours of the Lightfast has gone straight into my colour chart file. I have so many of the Derwent pencils & I love them, quite frankly it is only the Artist range that I really can't get on with. So, short of my numbers coming up, I won't be splurging on the full set, but I am open to buying a few of them open stock to complement the pencils I already own. I've studied the charts extensively previously & noticed they had carried over 40 shades from their other pencil sets into the Lightfast, so I will be looking for the other unique colours. Such a shame that that pink never made the cut, it is beautiful!

Hi Jude thank you so much my friend fo such a kind comment, I really appreciate it. First of I completely agree about the pink, it is a really lovely Color and a lot of botanical artists would have loved, but I have no idea why it didn’t make the grade. I know what you mean regarding the Derwent Artist pencils, I personally love them but I know so many struggle a bit with them and I can completely understand why. This is why I personal think there is no such thing as a terrible set of colored pencils, because what I find amazing, another artist might not like them at all. On my review video I made a list of the colors that could be found in the Lightfast 100 set that could be found in other sets across the range, but I only included those pencils that had the exact same pigment name in the pencils and not what the colors looked like visually. I have a lot of reviews on the go at the minute but I think I will sit down and try that some time. Again thank you so much for your wonderful support and incredibly kind comment, thank you so much

Just received a set of 40 luminance and wasn’t impressed. The texture of the core varies wildly. Some are crumbly and others scratchy. I also purchased a 12 set of lightfast which are flawless. If you’re trying to decide between the two, get the lightfast! Update: purchased the 72 lightfast set, couldn’t be happier! I just wish someone here sold them open stock (Toronto)

I agree with you! I do not regret having chosen the Derwent Lightfast! I love them! they are smooth, creamy, blend well! and you don't have to add as many layers to achieve what you want! I have the polychromos, because they are transparent, and they make fine lines, I also have the Prismacolors but only the ones with a good lightfastness! but, when I tried the lightfast ones, I compare them with a mix between the polys and the Prisms, I bought the set of 36... and now I'm buying them open stock in the online stores that have them cheap. I would have liked to buy the set of 72🤪🤤

I think everyone is different and it depends on what you enjoy working on. I have all three Luminance, Lightfast and Poly Chromos and I love the Luminance best, especially for skin, but as I learn fur and use sanded grain paper and powder blender more, Poly Chromos are now becoming a big time love affair. I have a full box set of Lightfast-I don't reach for them all that much. Not a big fan. I feel they are too soft to be oils and to hard to blend. Not really my favorites and they are crazy expensive now, I got mine for about half the price they are going for now

I'm getting both. Well, sort of. :D I can't afford them, but I like coloured pencils, so there we are. I just ordered a bunch of Luminance from that shop you link on your site, and I won't be getting the whole Derwent Lightfast set as some of the colours exist in other sets that I already have. The minute I get a set I take out everything that isn't acceptably lightfast and either put them in another set for my personal use, or I give them to this kids group my sensei runs at his dojo. As near as I can figure it, these following colours are the ones in the Lightfast range that DO NOT show up in other sets. I compared to Coloursoft, Studio, Artists, Artists black and white six, Drawing, Procolour, and Inktense: Amber Gold Apricot Autumn Brown Autumn Red Banana Basil Blue Violet Bordeaux Cherry Red Chestnut Cinnamon Cloud Grey Dark Cyan Dark Honey Dark Orange Dark Turquoise Denim Derwent Red Dusky Pink Flame Fossil Grey Golden Sun Granite Ivy Light Aqua Light Bronze Merlot Mid Blue (70%) Mid Blue Midnight Blue (70%) Mist Moonstone Mountain Green, Natural Brown Nightshade Ocean Blue (Dark) Ocean Blue Pacific Blue Peridot (Blue) Peridot (Yellow) Persian Orange Pine Platinum Purple Raisin Sandstone Sapphire Scarlet Seaweed Sepia (Red) Sienna Strawberry Taupe Wild Lavender

I have bought so many brands of pencils which I used once and then gave away to my nieces and nephews. Lols...when do you find the time for your art? Thank you so much Louise, it wasn’t something I had thought about until I was asked, but when I was creating the comparison charts I noticed that the Luminance didn’t have very much in the way of pale pinks. The Luminance was a little bit like the Lightfast in the sense that there was not many pale pinks, a few fleshy tones which I guess could be classed as pale pink or peach. On closer inspection, on both sets, there wasn’t very many pale blues or pale Greens either. For me personally, I think the Faber Castell Polychromos 120 Set offers the best across the board selection of pale tones. For this reason I am actually going to be doing a comparison review of the Derwent Lightfast, Caran D’Ache Luminance and Faber Castell Polychromos and maybe the Caran d’Ache Pablos. I think almost all colored pencil artists and enthusiasts would say given the chance of on,y owning three sets of colored pencils, they would select the Lightfast, Luminance and Polychromos. I know not all artists would select these three but I think a lot would. Thank you so much for your comment and which three sets would you have and do you think I should include the Pablo in the next comparison video?
@louisedavies1867
@louisedavies1867 5 жыл бұрын
The Art Gear Guide yes, I would say the Lightfast, FB Polys , and probably Luminence would be my top 3. I don’t have the full set of Lumies though, whereas I do have the full of Lightfast and Polys. Only have a few Pablos too, but I know a lot of people like them, and use them aside the Luminence to make a bigger colour range, so including them in the review would probably be a good idea. I guess the pale pinks, pale blues, and pale greens must be hard to make really Lightfast. Which is something artists may need to take into consideration if using those colours from the FB poly range.

@magical571
@magical571 7 ай бұрын
@@emilyerdbeere9210 only caran d ache and derwent have modern lightfast ratings. polychromos are very unreliable in their charts. long story short: around 27 of their 3 stars pencils are actually equivalent to a 1 (talking about polychromos). the colord pencil asociation of america has done thoprough testing of most brands and lines, you can find the results in their book. Polychromos's chart is to be taken with a big grain of salt, not reliable. but then again, if yout hink about it, they aren't astm rated, so really with polychromos we were alays depending on trusting faber castel (which most artists did for decades now), but it was only that: trust, not actually evidence based (artists who would recommend for their lightfast qualities, qould do so based of faber castel's own chart, so it's circular reasoning, and now they have competition in the form of derwent0s lightfast and caran d ache luminance.)

I know that pink is a very fugitive colour which fades so it may be hard to get a range of stable pink colours. Caran d'ache only has one pink colour in their Luminance range, though more in their Pablo range, but not sure of their lightfast rating. I would rather have had one less of the tan colours and the pink instead. Maybe Harry could have a quiet word in Derwent's ear and the pink pencil could be released as open stock.

I ordered the full set in 3 instalments (36+36+28). I just got the first package - the 28 new pencils and I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed - in more than half of the pencils the pigment is not centred (I have pictures!). I have other brands and don't have this problem there. This should not happen in a top scale pencils.
@TheArtGearGuide
@TheArtGearGuide 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Rebecca, I am sorry to hear this, I’d love to see the photos, I was always under the impression that you could only see whether or not a core was centred by looking at the end of the pencil as in the case with the Prismacolor pencils, but the Luminance and Lightfast pencils are all capped and we are unable to see the core. Obviously we can see the core via the actual sharpened end, but it is almost impossible to see how centred the core is from this view, I’ve been sat at my desk since seeing your comment trying to look at the pencils and see if I can determine if they are centred or not. That being said, a core being centred or not only impacts the sharpening ability of the pencil, so it is widely considered an off centred core will always cause the core to break when sharpening. That being said I have yet to have a single Lightfast or Luminance pencil break when sharpening. Have you had any of your off centred pencils break whilst sharpening? If so, you should record this happening and reach out to Derwent. Also, if half your pencils are off centred causing half of them to break when sharpening, show me the clip and I will do my very best to contact Derwent on your behalf as that is quite a bad thing considering the price of the pencils. You can send the clip to my email address if you like theartgearguide@gmail.com or if you want to share your findings publicly you can share it on my Facebook page. This is quite a serious issue given half your pencils are in this situation. I first learned about the significance of a centred core when everyone was talking about the Prismacolor Premier pencils braking quite frequently. Lots of artists would buy their Prismacolor pencils and protect them completely, never dropping them and still the cores would break when sharpening, that was when the centred core theory materialised, because as the pencil turned in the sharpener, rather than turning in a full circle, it would almost wobble, creating an oval effect, causing pressure on the core of the pencil which cause the core to snap.
@angelopastorini1711
@angelopastorini1711 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Rebecca, probably these newly launched pencils still have some problems regarding the productive process. There might be some batches that are defective and this is surely an issue that will be fixed over time. The first batches of almost every product on Earth, including super expensive ones, may present some issues. And as Harry said, the core of the Lightfast is not as soft and creamy as the Prismacolor one, so it wouldn't probably make any difference, specially if you use hand crank sharpeners or you are careful when sharpening. Keep updating us if you experience some breakage issues and stay well :)

I've had problems over the years with Derwent! I bought the 72 set and some of the extra 28 and I've had a few breakage issues, I'm so careful sharpening my pencils. I've also had a violet put in other Derwent sets on occasion, obviously they've run out of the correct colour and they always use violet as a replacement! I do love these pencils though, it's like they were made for me 😉

Just wondering... I read a review that suggested using a fixative to eliminate wax bloom popping up from these pencils. Also, in the insert that comes in the tin, Derwent writes that in their sample preparation of their testing methods for lightfastness, the "Surface lightly wiped 24 hours to remove any bloom". However, these pencils are oil-based: hence, therefore and ergo, should they not be bloom-free like the Caran d'Ache Luminance or Pablos, or F.-C. Polychromos? What has been your experience with bloom with the Derwent Lightfast?
@TheArtGearGuide
@TheArtGearGuide 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chiara. First of all I don't think asking me this question will help you only because I personally feel all this oil and wax based pencils is a myth, well, not a myth but people take it too literally. When I first started out reviewing art products and still to this day, I always go directly to the company to get information on the product. But back when I started I would say that a certain product was either wax or oil and it caused all manner of confusion and division in the comments section. Because of this I wanted to look into this further and so I contacted some of the larger pencil companies and was able to communicate with their Chemists. Without obviously divulging the ingredients in the pencils, each Chemist confirmed that some pencils might have a little bit more oil or wax, but essentially there are no pencils that are just oil or wax. There are lots of different types waxes used and there are many other factors to the core of the pencil that can determine how the pencil feels when laying down color. A fantastic example of this is, again when I first started out, I used to read and hear all the time that so called oil based pencils are hard and wax based pencils are always softer. However, perhaps the hardest cored pencil, the Derwent Artist is considered a wax based pencil. I can't really comment on the Lightfast insert literature, I personally have not experienced bloom when using the Lightfast pencils, however, bloom also depends on the paper you use or at least it can be a contributing factor. I am sorry I haven't been very helpful in answering your question but I personally have never experienced bloom build up with Lightfast pencils. In my experience softer cored pencils can produce bloom build up and the harder the core the less likely bloom will occur, it has less to do with wax or oil content and more to do with the softness or hardness of the core. Also a lot of the time bloom can be avoided, at least until the final stages of your work by using light layers or a toothier paper such as velum or better still a 100% cotton paper also seems to reduce bloom. If you are using a soft core pencil and immediately start with a medium to heavy pressure, bloom will occur much faster. The Lightfast pencils are creamy but their core is not super soft like the Coloursoft or Prismacolor. Sorry I couldn't offer any further help on this for you

@@TheArtGearGuide First of all, thank you Harry for taking the time not only to give me an answer, but to give me a detailed one! Second, no need to apologize for you not being able to “offer any further help”: you were extremely helpful and your explanations answered all the questions that could have arisen from your reply. I thought that if a pencil had more wax than oil, then it was considered a wax pencil and was prone to bloom. That is why my confusion about the Derwent Lightfast oil-based (classified as such by the company) when i read that they wipe away any bloom on the colour chart before doing the lightfastness. I’m glad to hear that you have not experienced any bloom with the Lightfast and relieved. I usually work with hot press paper for botanical work. Maybe I'll try using a toothier paper, just for fun, to see what kind of roses I can draw. Again, thank you ever so much!

If you are looking for just muted colors your best bet is to buy open stock from a range of pencil sets. The only sets you can buy that are all muted colors would be the new pastel tone sets, but you are very limited to what you can do with just a full set of pastel tones. You can’t really buy full sets of muted tone Colored Pencils because whilst muted tones are beautiful, most people require some saturated tones in there as well. I guess the only set that would be considered muted tones that comes to mind is the Derwent Drawing Set. I’ll take a look through my notes tomorrow to see if any other sets spring to mind

I prefer the Procolour or Artist pencils for greens. But they won't have the lightfast qualities for sold artwork I suppose. At least it's relatively easy to mix greens for yourself. Easier than pinks I think. If I wanted a pink and intended to mix it I'd start with a red rather than those oddly salmon pinks that both sets have. It just goes to show how hard it is to make a lightfast pink.

i prefer Derwent Lightfatst pencils over Caran D'ache Luminance...Caran D'ache is super expensive. i went on the carandash.com i saw a fountain pen for $11,500 and a roller pen for $10,250 that's when i realized that Caran D'ache in on high crack

It has become a really difficult thing now to select a favourite pencil between the Derwent Lightfast and the Caran d'Ache Luminance and that is a good thing. Before the Lightfast, so may Coloured Pencil artists either used the Luminance or the Faber Castell Polychromos, but the Lightfast pencils are so amazing they have to be included in the top tier. Some of the prices on the Caran d'Ache website are unbelievable, but as far as the colored pencils are concerned you can get sets much cheaper on eBay and Amazon. However, you are right about the price of the pens, I have wanted a really nice fountain pen for ages and I looked at Caran d'Ache and I just couldn't believe the prices of some pens, you could buy a car for the price of some pens lol. Any way mate thank you so much for stopping by and commenting

Hi Harry, very informative video as usual. I need to try the Lightfast as they seem and effectively are gorgeous pencils. If I could, I'd definitely buy myself a full set of luminance and a full set of Lightfast for this Christmas LOL, but unfortunately I can't. Here in Italy, there's still no trace of the Lightfast range, unless you buy them on Amazon, but I want to try few of them first. Thank you for your effort, and oh, the multi-camera is a big plus now :)

Even though Derwent LFhad 100 shades their color distribution is not balanced very less skintones too much of earths .But Luminance range is well balanced(even its only 76) right from skintones,blues,purples,reds,greys etc.its only my opininon

Well the luminance has 24 new colours coming in july, coming up to 100 colours. I think there are too many skintone colours in the luminance, not enough dark colours such as dark purples, mid tone greens, and muted colours is limited also.

the best pallete are both together plus polychromos 120. Most the colors are different - except maybe for the pure yellows. But, for a painting, you can have 300 collors and you will probably never use the pure collor, but a mix of at least 2

Thank you for this review Harry I have recently found your channel and it is great. I have watched this review a couple of times now as planning to use my savings on a couple of sets of one coloured pencils and one water coloured pencils, have saved for ages and keep moving from one set to another. It is a difficult choice so your comparison and the time you took to do the swatch carts was very much appreciated. Thank you . :)

Hi Harry, thanks so much for this - I went to the Pencil Museum and was given 2 of the Derwent Lightfast pencils to try, they are beautiful and blend like butter. Not something I can afford right now but they would be in my top 3 pencils. I thought I would mention what I use for swatching it's a stamp set called Color Swatches by Waffle Flower Crafts. They have several different sets actually including a colour wheel. I stamp them with a waterproof black ink pad and then you have nice neat boxes. I have swatched my Inktense pencils, watercolours, brush pens and even glitter! You can buy the stamp sets easily in the UK.

Hi Nanez my friend, I know the artist you are referring to Neeyellow is an absolutely wonderful artist, I always watch his videos, such an amazing talent. Regarding your question, you can indeed add details with the Lightfast and mainly because, alothough the Lightfast pencils lay down like a rich a creamy buttery feel, they actually still have quite a firm core, which allows for adding detail such as white over the top of Van Dyke Brown etc. I am so sorry I didn’t add this in my video however, I will be doing another comparison video of the Derwent Lightfast, Caran d’Ache Luminance and the Faber Castell Polychromos and perhaps the Caran d’Ache Pablos, I will definitely include this test in that review. Thank you so much for you comment and for your support, I really appreciate it my friend.

For the vast majority, Derwent are not financially viable due to them not beiing widely available as open stock. Faber Castell Polychromos are better in every respect and together with Caran d Ache luminunce form the perfect partner. They might be dearer than Derwent at the outset but work out far cheaper when looking for replacements. Do people really want to buy a ton of pencils they will never ever use when looking for replacements? Both Derwent and Faber Castell use the Blue Wool Lightfast scale which is the standard for art materials. Polychromos are marked with stars, two 1 star pencils are in the 3 -4 range with none being lower. 102 carry 3 stars and are in the highest rating of 7-8. 16 carry 2 stars which is 5 - 6 rating. Introduced in 1908, the Polychromos have stood the test of real time.
@magical571
@magical571 7 ай бұрын
polychromos star ratings are highly unreliable and not up to modern standards (around 27 of their three stars are actually equivalent to a 1, which is unacceptable). plus, the derwent lightfast are inded aviable openstock, depends on the stores were you live.
@stevejones1682
@stevejones1682 7 ай бұрын
@@magical571 I don't know where you got your info from but I have not been able to find any info to support what you have stated regarding the lightfastness of the Polychromos. The lightfastness of Polychromos have now been able to stand the test of real time, having been in production for over a hundred years, 1908. Initially Derwent weren't really interested in Lightfastness as they would not increase the range of their lightfast Drawing pencil series from just 24. They began as 18 and only increased to 24 in the 1990s. The Lightfast range only began production in 2018. For the vast majority, Derwent are not widely available as open stock as shops appear to prefer not to carry them that way. This is not to say that Derwent are bad pencils, it's just that they need to work harder to encourage sellers to carry the open stock. Until they do, they are not viable for the vast majority. I will add that, like Derwent, Faber Castel use the Blue Wool scale with none of the pencils having a rating of 1. The lowest is in the 3 - 4 range, marked with 1 star. The Blue wool scale is a standard used in art materials, though originally designed for wool. In view of what you stated, my initial post has ben editted to show the true situation.

Dick Blick has the 100 set of luminence in the standard box, not the wooden box, for $287 as of March 19, 2022. If Derwent would sell the full range in their standard tin instead of the wooden box I'd buy them because the cost difference is significant when you get the wooden box. I'd end up buying all 100 anyway, but I just can't get over the price for the box lol. Very informative video as always, thank you.

I also got my set of 24 today and have already tried it. In my set the Heather pencil is hard and can not be applied evenly :-(, otherwise the pencils are very comfortable. From my set Heather also looks more like something old rose so rather dull grey purple.

thank you so incredibly much for the incredible comparison. May i ask, anyone unhappy with the derwent lightfast or experience variations with some colours? I have Lumi, and 3 open stock lightfast pencils. I tried them on several papers and one pencils in particular felt odd- almost clumpy(?). And im not sure i particularly liked the feeling of them. Is it just because the are different than what im used to? Is it too few pencils to really test them (i have tried 3 open stock in other brands and could tell i loved them) . Anyone not like them? Is it a dud pencil!?! Lol

One of the times Koh-I-Noor sent something out for me to review they placed it in the set. I think if you check out their website they might have them on there or failing that, at the bottom of their site is a customer service email address, email them and ask them and I am sure they will send some out to you because at the end of the day it’s advertising in a strange way for them.

Thank you for this test. Have you made a lightfast test already? These pencil are very expensive. I wonder if they are better than Polychromos, which are rated very lightfast. But for all that the Polychromos fade in the sunlight, the Luminance, too. It was with red hue of different brands in a test of 7 days in sunlight. I am very disappointed because both brands are expensive, too. In comparison cheaper brands were less sensitive.
