I'm finding the more I watch you the more I really appreciate and admire you. I have been learning so many fun techniques and ideas for so many different products. Your honesty about products, both good and bad, is also hugely appreciated. Thank you so much! I'm sorry the metallic didn't pop how you were hoping, but I do think it's a beautiful card. : )

I bought those pencils on a whim and I'm disappointed with them. I expected them to be more metallic than they are. I'm glad I'm not the only one! And also because of their shape, I found them more difficult to sharpen. You live and learn!

when you use the versa mark perlex you can dust off the excess and your work area with Swiffer or Swiffer type dusters, works well for glitter too.

I agree that they are not very metallic looking but I like the dragonfly stamp and the Pearl ex powders. I have a few but seldom use them but I think it's time I got them out again. Thanks for the inspiration!

Very pretty! I always think that the colored pencils have something on the point. Sort of waxy, to protect them in the packaging. But if they come un-sharpened, they don't have it. Maybe I'm imagining that, maybe not. lol Love the creation. I like the idea of using the eye shadow powder. Thanks for the inspiration. Jess

One year I made about 40 Christmas cards using a clear Versamark stamp pad and Christmas stamps, then brushed the cards with green Pearl-Ex. They came out really pretty but the next time I was dusting my craft area I found the screen of the little TV by my craft table was covered with green shiny dust! I hope it was just the static from the TV screen that had attracted it and that I hadn't been breathing in that much Pearl-Ex powder. LOL

it was probably the static:)

I have the set of 12 also and I've found the same issues with the metallic pencils as well. However, I am going to try using them more to see if that doesn't soften them up a bit more. I got them less than half price on eBay and found some other sets of Derwent pencils for very low prices as well, so not a real loss, but still not what I had expected, or hoped for.

Thank you for the honesty with the pencils, I have bought a couple of different types over the years and thought it must have just been me, they just didn't meet my expectations. I think its probably the medium more than the brand though. I thought I might try them on something a little rougher, like a cold pressed rough water colour paper? if you find a good use for them let us know :) I don't get too upset if I have bought them on sale because anything I am not so fussed with my wee one is happy to relieve me of lol :)

I really like your videos because they are real world in that this is what happens to all of us on a trail by error method. I sometimes havev to try things six times before it comes out right. I bought the entire set of Inktense pencils after watching you and I like them. I will not buy the Derwent metallics. Maybe I would use the Gellato metallics instead? I think I will try this with the pearls alone, although I only have a few colors. I really like the art feel of your cards.
@thefrugalcrafter10 жыл бұрын
the gelatos and gel sticks are very shiny but they are also very creamy, I think that it is hard to get a really shiny metallic in a hard pencil.
@scrapgirl1467110 жыл бұрын
Lindsay, I bought these pencils awhile ago and only tried them a few months ago and I was SO disappointed in them. I felt the same way, the color barely released and they didn't seem like the quality I am used to in Derwent. I thought maybe my set was defective, so although I am sorry you had bad results as well, at least I know it isn't just my set. I wouldn't recommend these pencils if anyone is looking to purchase them. Maureen
@thefrugalcrafter10 жыл бұрын
I think it was you who asked for the tutorial. I think I am just going to call them "opaque watercolor pencils" to use on black paper LOL! That way they will meet my expectation and I can do something with them LOL! I can't change the product but I can change my expectation of it:) Honestly though, I have never found a metallic pencil that was that shiny, Maybe it cannot be done....

Thanks for your honest review . I almost wanted to buy a set the other day, guess I'll save up for other goodies. The characters on the stamp are Chinese and it's meant good health , prosperous ,the four seasons roughly but not coherent enough to form any real meaning. I hope that help.

I am also a fan of Derwent products, however I received these Metallics for Christmas and I am not impressed. Actually, I am disappointed. Have you found their hidden beauty yet? If so, would you please share? Thanks much.
@deepowers31175 жыл бұрын
Lindsay, Surely Derwent must know by now how many people were completely disappointed in these metallic pencils. Have they, or anyone else come up with a better product? I want to do hummingbirds with the flashy glimmer that some of their colors have, depending on the species, and I don't know what to use to get that look. Perhaps, metallic is not the right way to go. For instance, how do I get that flash and glimmer effect on the red throat of a male Ruby Throat Hummer. I appreciate this review and will see if I can try some of the things you did for a better effect. Thank you for being you. I have tried other reviewers on products, but they all seem flat and boring compared to you, so you are just about the only one I listen to now. Your lively sparkle and marvelous teaching skills and artistic talent make even I think I might learn how to do something. /Thanks for being you, Dee

I actually quite like the way the dragonfly has turned out, loved the goldfish as well. I have some metallic pencils I picked up somewhere a couple of years ago, they are cheap kids one's, I've not thought to use them with water but they do work quite well freestanding or colouring something I then go over areas with them just to add a bit of metallic colour that works ok. Love the dragonfly it's exactly what I want right size and design that I want to have tattooed on my foot with mum and dad down the body, where did it come from? Is there a picture of it anywhere, I need to draw out one to take with me for them to transfer might try drawing this out. Huggles xxxAnnxxx

I ordered this set of 12 Derwent Metallic pencils, I and have to say I was a very disappointed when I colored them out. The red was a very dark maroon, The pink came out almost the same, not pink at all, yellow came out a mid-olive green, etc. The only colors that looked right were the copper and silver. They didn't look very metallic, either. Is this because I swatched them out dry, or did I get a bad set? What if I just want to color a hummingbird throat in metallic? How can I make the red actually look red instead of maroon? Should I wet the pencil after I color it?
@thefrugalcrafter9 жыл бұрын
Deirdre Powers I was dissapointed too, I am so glad I gotr them on sale. The look better dry, water washes them out. They are the only derwent product I was not happy with. However they are similar to graphictint and if you do not expect then to really sparkle you can get good use from them:)
@deepowers31179 жыл бұрын
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich They did not swatch out dry much better than wet, and unfortunately, for hummingbirds, I really wanted metallic brilliance. I think anyone who buys metallics on purpose is probably looking for the irredescence. The Pearlescent set from Niji didn't swatch out very well for hummingbirds (ie. like they looked in the pan), but are nice for what they say they are for--Pearlescent. Any suggestions for another metallic pencil. preferably watercolor pencil or paint. Could I thin acrylic metallic paint with medium or water to work with watercolor paint or pencils?

Hi I went to some of the stamp places, you got some of your stamps from. It offered without mounting or cling foam. can you tell me the difference can you use the stamps without mounting, I noted anther site you had recommend had different choices also. Could you please explain the difference. Thanks so much.
@thefrugalcrafter10 жыл бұрын
Hi Suzan. It is personal Preference, if it is offered I buy Unmounted, it is cheaper and I can decide if I want to put it on cling cushion (it is cheaper to buy sheets of it and do it yourself if you have the time or inclination) or just use a glue stick and slap it on a block and stamp that way. The deep etched stamps are fine that way (About Art Accents are deep etched and most of mine from them I painted with a special glue that remains sticky and I use it on a clear block.) Here is a tutorial on how to mount them yourself and you can decide if it is worth the trouble or if you would like to try it yourself:) kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6aqoo2kd917hs0

Lindsey, do you know what the Chinese letters say, do they have a meaning? I'd hate to give it out and it's just some kind of gibberish in Chinese.
@thefrugalcrafter10 жыл бұрын
I do on the stamps from About Art Accents because it has English translation or a theme on the set. The clear background was an old PSX stamp so I'm sure it is OK. I mainly worry about keeping it right side up and I found that most calligraphy kinds has "legs" on the bottom, like a stick figure and it is flatter on the top if that helps, that said I have stamped it upside down before:)

Wow...Pearl ex powders are something I won't be getting in a hurry...over here they are asking around 60 pounds for the 32 pot set...way out of my league. I love the effect though
@bejayroles582010 жыл бұрын
***** We are really lacking in dedicated craft stores this side of the pond, our big chain is called Hobbycraft and they actually have a store 5 minutes walk from me, however, they don't stock pearl-ex. I've looked on their website and they have a set of 4 Perfect Pearls metallic which includes two brushes and the smallest perfect medium stamp pad I've ever seen for 18 pounds, really expensive. They also do a set of 6 Twinklinh H2Os for 12 pounds, but they're watercolour paints aren't they so not the same. The lack of stores here makes me really jealous of the choice you have in the States. I'll keep searching as I know I can get mica powder pots cheaper than pearl-ex, and I'm guessing that they would do the same kind of job :)
