Derwent Procolour Commission by Cindy Wider

When Derwent first released the Procolor range of pencils, I was commissioned by Derwent to create a coloured pencil artwork. As an Official Ambassador for Derwent, I was involved in the testing stage of these beautiful pencils. Thats why you'll see that the pencils don't look quite the same as the ones you can now purchase in the shops. At this stage, the pencils were a 'pre-release' set. I really enjoyed this process and it took over 110 hours to complete this drawing.

This video does a great job showing the process of putting together a complex composition. Details such as developing values and using the hand protection are helpful. Cindy's narration explains how she chooses visual elements that relate but also deepen meaning, as well as what she appreciates about the brand of pencil she's using. Thanks!

I am just curious how so many people get pre-release art supplies. Do you have to have so many KZbin hits, do you have to know a company or contact the company or any special thing like that?

Hi there, I am not sure of the exact process that any company use to invite people to trial their products. I received one of these very first sets because I am an official Ambassador for Derwent with a strong interest in their coloured pencil ranges and create hundreds of videos sharing their products within my DrawPj Academy. I am only just beginning to release KZbin videos within the last year. For 9 years DrawPj.com has been successfully operating behind paid areas on the internet. I first introduced myself to Derwent members several years ago at an art exhibition with the UK Coloured Pencil Society and our business relationship has developed since.

Lovely work, the pencils don't look like the ProColour with the dark barrels. Were these an early, unpainted, prototype? Shame those gorgeous purples and pinks aren't light fast though.

Thanks Sue, Yes, this was a commission that I created for Derwent and I was given one of the very first prototype box sets to create this image with -they hadn't even been painted yet:)

What a privilege. I loved the clocks part of the drawing. Reminds me of the illustrated copy of the book Hugo that I have. Also, I had a watch once where all the inner workings showed. It was fascinating to watch it working. Even had tiny little rubies in the workings.
