Surprised so many people didn't know him his work was truly inspiring; he was our American poet. I first saw him in Chicago we were in our twenties; he kept at it- a very shy performer. I saw him much later, we oldies ravaged by cancer, surviving, he still had something to say. I now live in a retirement community and we are in lockdown, I usually take off, place tennis and do things. But now I am paranoid I will pick up that virus and bring it home to the sweet, fragile folks who live around me. I watch them longing for company but we are all six feet away from each other and they tell me they read to the grandchildren over the phone, over the night. And they wonder if their grandchildren will remember them. They are afraid. They say when you are old your world is about losses but I was not ready for this. Glad you are getting to know him.

I can't go into a supermarket without getting upset now. It's so eerie, it's so real. I feel so much for the people working there. I'm scared if I overstep any boundaries. I'm scared for my elderly parents, separated from each other & separated from me. I'm sorry for all the families who have lost loved ones and cannot even say goodbye to them properly. I see the nature world exploding with life now & that is some balance of all of this for me. Take care Des. Stay safe everyone

Thanks for articulating what many are feeling. Never saw John Prine but a singer I was friendly with covered a lot of his songs and they always stood out as really special. Sad he beat cancer twice only to be taken by a random virus from the other side of this small interconnected world. RIP

Grew up on John Prine. Was "dragged" to his shows from a very young age. Saw him twice in Derry (Rialto and Millenium Forum), once in Letterkenny and once in Belfast. Met him in Derry. My Dad was friendly with John and is rattled by his death (John beat cancer twice in the past 20 years). I'm 33 years old and into a vast range of music, and I have to say John Prine is the greatest songwriter of all time (in my opinion). I'm glad you've finally discovered his music Des. Thanks for talking about him. Have a listen to his album "Souvenirs" - updated re-recordings of some of his greatest work.

This video came up after our Patreon session this morning. I am not an expert on John Prine either, but I could write a million words about his first album. It connected with me the way that you are speaking about in this podcast. I can put a face to a lot of his songs, people who John had never met. His songs were universal. I hope you got a chance to dig into his catalog.

I used to go see him all the time in Illinois when I was a teenager. He is a legend.............. I am so gutted to hear of his death. He was supposed to play Galway a few years ago but he was too ill. I know he is breaking the speed of the sound of love somewhere:)))

Thank you Des for your poignant point of view on all this. It’s one I share. I knew John Prine had fallen ill and I was hoping it wouldn’t take him but unfortunately it did. I also knew your mom. She was one of my favorite patients and we became close over the years. You and I met years ago when you accompanied her to an appt and I was moved by the humanity I saw in you even then. I also lost my mom almost 3 years ago and I too connect to this awful time in a similar way because of all the sadness I’ve experienced. Thank you for sharing your take-away. It’s important and it’s valid. And it’s validated my feelings as well. Hugs to you, and our elders, and each other.

Des Bishop haha! I didn’t want to give her personal info on YT. Her female oncologist in New Hyde Park. I was her doctor’s secretary for many years.

Oh, I know that song! ...Beth Midler did a version of that song a long time ago! Always got me lol it was on the same album as 'the wind beneath my wings' Quarantine is definitely an emotional time as you have so much time to spend with your feelings.
