Derby fan. This reminds me of us under our former owner. Rash decision that brings more rash decisions which eventually leads you to the place you don’t want to go. I don’t know your financial situation, but when you are newly promoted side, like us, it is ALWAYS difficult. Owners that bail on the guy that got you there brings negativity especially when the new manager, using the same players, gets the same results. First time back in the Championship in 20 plus years, and the owners panic. Dumb. There are so many positives with your club this year. It’s great to see you lot giving it a go. You might get a short term bounce. But what happens when you return to the mean? Sack the new guy? It’s an emotional decision. And a bad one at that.
@OUFCFanView11 күн бұрын
Thanks for this. Nice to see neutral fans agree with this decision. I thought there would have been more loyalty to Buckingham especially after that playoff win. Never got the impression the staying in the Championship was the be all and end all for the owners but it is clear that it is now. It is the first time they have done something like this though.

Des Buckingham will be an Oxford legend forever. Thanks Des, we'll never forget what you achieved here, particularly the play-off and final result and the astonishing day at Wembley, but also for properly UNITING the whole of Oxfordshire with the feel good factor. We were all together, totally together, and in it through thick and thin! Been amazing, good luck with your bright future. Very, very badly handled by the club who don't seem to get this.

Middlesbrough fan. One of the many things I love about our chairman Steve Gibson is that he notoriously is fiercely loyal to his managers and gives them the time and backing needed. It's always a shame when a manager loses their job but even more so when the majority of the fanbase are behind him and not wanting it to happen. I hope Oxford can bring in someone who can do a good job for them and keep them in the championship! Good luck

It was a massive shock, and I am worried that the new manager is still not in place, so we will have Craig Short against Leeds leading the side, then a new manager (if appointed) only has a few days to implement his tactics for 2 massive games vs Cardiff and Plymouth. It seems a big risk.

Oxford sneaked into the championship totally unexpectedly. One win in fifteen is pretty miserable. The board obviously values being in this league, so it’s no big surprise to the neutral. One season away from the promised land of the premier league 🤢 🤮. It’s very easy to get lost and forgotten in leagues one and two. As a Pompey fan I know this too well. I am surprised our manager hasn’t been canned yet. Some of our performances this season have been shocking. Good luck for the rest of the season. 👍🏻⭐️🌙

Buckingham probably was a bit tactically naive. Even with a new boss there is no guarantee that things will get better.

A very sad day. Driving to Oxford yesterday, my fellow supporter friend and I did wonder whether Buckingham would be sacked (or quit) if things didn’t improve, and we had the same discussion on the way home. We agreed that it was unlikely, at least in the short term. I’ve read this afternoon that the owners were at yesterday’s game, so might they have come over to do the deed, having already having made the decision and having Des’s replacement waiting in the wings … ?
@OUFCFanView10 күн бұрын
Cheers Ian. The thoughts about Buckingham being sacked never really crossed my mind. I was just wondering what he needed to tweak to make us harder to beat. The news was a real shock. THIS IS CRAZY!!! Des Buckingham was one of oxfords greatest managers (OF ALL TIME). Honestly idk what they were thinking, not only has Buckingham got oxford out of league one, but he kept oxford out of the relegation zone (Barely). However all we can do is hope that the next manager somehow lives up to Buckingham's importance for oxford.
@OUFCFanView10 күн бұрын
It's a massive shock, and it will take time for fans to get over it. If the new manager (probably Rowett) starts poorly then it will make the decision even worse.
@robertallen91314 күн бұрын
I think OUFC have clearly decided that we need “an experienced coach”, which might be good in the short term. Someone like Robbins could manage to keep us up, but he won’t have the impact of Buckingham. The board have shown themselves as clinical and unemotional. Maybe that’s how you run a club, but it makes me distrust the board a hell of a lot more
@OUFCFanView10 күн бұрын
Robbins was always more thank just a safe pair of hands manager, but it is likely going to be Gary Rowett who does fit that bill. Also there is no guarantee that anyone could keep us up.
@robertallen91310 күн бұрын
Rowett is a pragmatic choice. Nothing against him personally, but the next few months of dull, attritional football doesn’t quicken the pulse. Plus if he keeps us up, he’d probably get the boot as soon as he has a bad patch next season
@AndyFoster-c9e14 күн бұрын
Hi Ian, great video, as always. I'm gutted, I can't believe the board has done this. As you have said, since Des has been here, the highs have been the best I've ever known. He is a good manager and will eventually end-up at the top end of the Championship or Premier League. I've no doubts about it. I wish the Board had tried harder to keep Murphy, put more money into that. We still haven't got anyone to replace him. We had a special team at the end of last season, that I think would have survived in the Championship. Now we've got to start again. Mark Robins would be my choice, but will he come here, probably not. Schumacher might be worth a go. They'll have to be pretty special to beat what Des achieved. The wrong decision.
@OUFCFanView10 күн бұрын
Cheers Andy. 4 days later and still no manager, so it seems an even more strange decision as everyday passes without a new manager. This was such a rash decision. The club should have given Buckingham more time and even allow him to rebuild if we went down.

Cheers Graham, yes it's is a real shock and a big shame. I was enjoying the journey under Buckingham. We were struggling, but wanted him to be given ample time to sort it. Looks like it will be Gary Rowett now. He is a good manager, but this does leave a sour taste.
@piggywwop13 күн бұрын
It may not be a disaster, I mean chances to be in this league don’t come easy and maybe the board feel Des was not the man going forward, there’s also things behind the scenes that we may never know. Whatever happens next, these 12 months have been the best 12 months of being an Oxford supporter. Playoff final, that first Norwich game, and Preston at home in September. You make a great point about the club behind as United as ever, all down to Des, you don’t get many more who would die for the badge. At this moment this still sounds like an awful decision though. I also wonder who will be in charge ahead of that Leeds game? Also, doesn’t seem like players have been permitted to post anything on socials regarding the situation, really confused on what’s gone on I reckon we now look at Ian Holloway!!!
@OUFCFanView11 күн бұрын
I imagine Swindon would be delighted if we took Holloway off their hands. Couple of days removed and I can start to see more and more logic for the sacking, but I am still not happy about it. Gary Rowett seems like he is going to get it and I think he is a good manager so fingers crossed it we prove to be the right decision. Not sure what the situation was with the players. Maybe they told them to keep messages private. Des will always be remembered for the Wembkey win though and gets to leave as a hero in the majority of people's eyes.
@tedeames586814 күн бұрын
Great memories of last season and Des, but I see this as a positive sign that the owners are serious about keeping us in the Championship. Championship places don't come easy and we need to get away from the cap-in-hand mentality that has seen us look timid, inflexible and over-cautious since the early honeymoon period. The owners have acted in time for us to bring in a manager with some Championship savvy. We have a right to be in this league, and we need to be there when the new stadium finally comes to fruition. I feel sad for Des Buckingham, but sentiment and league tables don't mix.
@OUFCFanView10 күн бұрын
Ted, thanks for the comment as always. What worries me at the moment is that Oxford have delayed a new manager appointment till the end of the week (if it is announced tomorrow). So we will have Craig Short in for the Leeds game, and then a new manager takes charge for just a few days to implement new tactics for the 2 crunch games against Cardiff & Plymouth. This seems like a risk, and may have been better off just sticking with Buckingham a bit longer. We have been poor lately, but there is no guarantee that a new boos will improve things.
@tedeames586810 күн бұрын
@@OUFCFanView It seems a bit odd that the Oxford Mail was saying that Gary Rowett was a done deal 2 days ago but here we are at the end of the week with no announcement. Is Rowett holding out for more money, or perhaps the hiring of a favourite assistant? Are the owners insisting that any new manager gives Ferdinan game time? The Leeds game is going to be a major test of the spirit within the squad. I really hope that they stand up to Leeds and, if they lose, at least show some pride and togetherness.

Hi Ian, yes, it’s very sad news indeed. Not what I wanted to happen. Having said that, not entirely unexpected. Performances and results have not been good enough of late. We are facing relegation on this form. Next game is Leeds away and I think we all know what will happen there. I disagree slightly with you when you say relegation would not be a disaster. For me it would, I’ve waited many years for championship football to return and I don’t want the play-off final memories to be tarnished. We all knew our first season would be very tough and it would all be about survival but we still have half a season to go. As for Des, I’m gutted for him personally. He’s a decent guy and is one of our own. I just wanted success for him and the football club. As for a successor, I suppose Mark Robbins, Neil Harris or maybe Gary O’Neil if he’s up for the challenge! A low day for our OUFC but let’s hope we stay up, whoever is in charge.

I’m as shocked as everybody else and thought Buckingham would still be with us next season regardless of relegation, if it came. As far as I’m aware there were no video interviews with Buckingham released after the match which would suggest he was told shortly after the game indicating a replacement has already been sourced. Buckingham is a quality coach and with his love of pacy wingers and his media savviness he probably suits a bigger club with a bigger budget and will no doubt be in the upper Championship, or higher, in the future. I’m sure he’s got a nice cheque to sweeten his Christmas and we’ll see him in the Sky EFL studios if he doesn’t walk straight into another job. One mitigating factor that is not widely known (I was told by a source close to Buckingham) is that he accepted the Wales job but that Wales could not agree compensation with Oxford so moved on to Bellingham. He was very close to doing another Manning on us. Other factors probably include the Kassam and new stadium situations which bring financial and planning pressures I’m sure the Championship will help with and Buckinghams seeming struggles to find a plan b without wingers. Btw yes, the playoff was pretty special. You’re perhaps a few years too young but our rise in the early 80’s, big cup scalps and the ‘86 final weren’t too bad either 😊
@OUFCFanView10 күн бұрын
Paul!!!! I deliberately have left your message till last, and I think I have saved the best till last. This is fascinating, especially about the Wales situation. I am friends with Buckingham's sister (used to work with her) and it looks like Des has taken the whole family away on holiday judging by her posts. It's 4 days removed now and we still don't have a new manager in place. This means they will have very little time to implement new ideas ahead of the Cardiff and Plymouth games. Would we not have been better off with Buckingham. It's a real shame. Even if it pays off it still leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Nathan Copper said on Rad Ox that Buckingham only did an interview with them and did no other media, so it makes you think he knew something was up. I started supporting Oxford in about 1992/1993 so missed the highs of the 80's That Wembley win and game was just about the perfect day, and will never be forgotten.
@PaulScowen9 күн бұрын
@ the way it was all done I can’t help thinking the board thought they had someone, maybe Rowett, but contracts weren’t signed & with the slew of dismissals the candidate had another offer and are back in negotiation mode again. The next manager odds have been stable for a few days now. Perhaps whoever it is doesn’t fancy Leeds away 1st up! Buckingham was really hampered with the lack of support for an assistant and coaching staff. I’ve no axe to grind with Short, Hackett etc but they were obviously the easy, cheap option and lack the experience Buckingham could’ve really of benefited from at this level. Whoever it is (please not Terry!), I hope they bring a team of coaching staff with them, which also makes the fans favourite, Robins, less appealing as his downfall at Coventry was down to a collapse of his relationship with his long time coach. To quote Coventry owner Doug King ‘at this level, with this deck of players, we are lacking an elite coach/tactician to support the manager’. That was equally true for Buckingham. I totally agree that we’d be better with Buckingham than managerless going into these fixtures, especially with players coming back and gaining match fitness. There’s already very little time to do any grass training between Leeds and Cardiff for a new coach. If Shorty is in interim charge for Leeds hopefully he can pull off a repeat of the Leyton O’s match or at the very least we don’t go into Boxing Day in the bottom 3. I was lucky, I went to my 1st match in ‘83. I was 11, so my formative years were spent watching a successful team in a visceral atmosphere. Edit: the club posted in the Leeds match preview that Rowett has been appointed but won’t take charge until after the match. They have since deleted the post, presumably because it hasn’t been announced yet🤦♂️ Look like from KR to 🐍 and now this they are on a steep learning curve!

Cheers Owen. It's quite common isn't it that a manager gets a side promoted then is sacked the next season. Just a shame when it happens to a manager who is largely liked. Looks like it will b Rowett. Are you happy with that?
@idi0tdetectioninprogress14 күн бұрын
Victim of his own success. Its a real shame, most clubs coming up from League 1 face something not dissimilar to those reaching the Premier League. Feel for clubs like Oxford and Portsmouth who've waited years to get back in the second tier. Hopefully you get the next appointment right and hang on in there.
@OUFCFanView10 күн бұрын
Victim of his own success sums it up really well. It was expected that we would struggle this season, and I feel the board have panicked at the first sign of trouble. Feel sorry for Des he did a great job.
@vincerobinson614414 күн бұрын
Mate, you don’t want the board splurging money in hope that you stay up. Losing money purposely is a slippery slope for everyone concerned.
@OUFCFanView10 күн бұрын
I agree, I would be happy if they just used the loan market, They have said there in money to spend. They even said that at the start of the season TBF.
@oxfox29413 күн бұрын
Bad decision well liked well respected done an amazing job of taking us up and realistically if we finished fourth its a great season, And you mentioned money well if the board want to throw money at us to stay up why not give it to the man that just took us out ion Div1 and knows the team, whoever comes in will I imagine have the same players.As a season ticket holder no one near me was calling for Des to go, in fact for once I think all the fans get what a tough job season and division this is, When im sat thirty yards from Luke Aisling against Boro a player that prob cost millions from Leeds and strolled the game it shows where we have come and what an achievement Des did, Whatever or wherever he goes I wish him all the best and I hope he knows the Oxford faithful will always love and respect him for what he did to our club, BUT whoever comes in the pressure is on from the start they have to win or else it shows the board for what they are and what they know about football,
@OUFCFanView10 күн бұрын
Excellently put and thanks for the comment. Yes it's a real shock and a massive shame. Starting to come to terms that Gary Rowett will probably take over, but that does mean we will be a very different style. I know virtually nobody was calling for Des Out in my comments. Even if the board get those right it will still leave a sour taste.

Get over it. There were boos at Oxford on Saturday: not many, but they were there. It was a matter of time before minor rumblings would become an avalanche of calls for his sacking, especially if we didn’t win v Cardiff or Plymouth who we are “supposed to beat”. Good luck Des. Oxford fans are never happy. You’re better off out of the three-sided stink house that is the Kassam, and better off out of some dubious plan to relocate to Kidlington onto some spit of land that isn’t even square. Get ready League Two. We’ll be seeing you in August ‘26.

in many cases it is the players that need sacking they are on the pitch not the manager ,none the less he will join the manager merry go round of being hired, fail, and get handsomely rewarded for the failure ,the fans will foot the bill either way
@OUFCFanView10 күн бұрын
Unfortunately that is the way. Any new manager no matter how good or experienced is going to struggle to keep Oxford up. I feel we would have had just as good of a chance under Buckingham.

OXFORD PAID Wimbledon approximately nearly Half a million pound for Jack Currie early in last season Bristol City had offered £600,000 to Wimbledon but the deal fell through as Wimbledon wanted Currie back on loan back on until the end of the season Des Buckingham decided to leave him out of the Oxford team and Leyton Orient. have him him on loan from Oxford if this is how Des Buckingham logic works it is hard surprising that he has been dismissed

We are throwing a long term opportunity for true success for a short term throw of the dice. Des has shown he is a skilled, developing, progressive coach, and loved by the fans. The club doesn't even own its 3 f*ing stands. We were expecting a relegation dog fight and with all the injuries what did the board expect. We started the season brilliantly. We might bring in someone new and stay up, and maybe we'll all forget about this in a couple seasons. If we go down though, this will be a sour note we won't forget. Des deserved better and that press release is shocking. Thank you Des, I will never forget my night at Wembley
@OUFCFanView10 күн бұрын
I agree with all of that. We run the risk of now of changing managers every season at the first sign of trouble. We might stay up under Rowett (assume it will be him) but it will still feel hollow. Rowett is a good coach though, so the gamble may pay off.
