The tip I would give to a new comer to the sport is simply to have fun. Go to a venue with mixed fish species and maggots and either fish off the top of a rod or top 3 or 4 on a pole or a 4 foot whip. The key to youngsters is to get a bite and get them hooked. For a newbie who's just started feeder fishing my tip would be never cast beyond your comfort zone. Anyone can cast 60 + meters but the further out you go the less accurate you'll be. Try to keep the feeder within a 3m area. Good luck 👍

Beginner Tip: When waggler fishing always use a float adaptor or swivel attachment so you can wrap Wagglers with ease when conditions change. very important if wind picks up and a heavier waggler is needed. Can change in seconds.

I am 15 and have been fishing for about 5 years and the single biggest thing that improved my fishing and catch rate was learning to cast too the clip. Being able to put a feeder accurately and gently tight against a far bank or an island or in the winter being able to cast repeatedly to the same pockets of fish will improve your catch rate i promise.

Beginner tip, never skip plummeting the depth of the swim you're fishing, you will save so much time later in the day, and have the confidence knowing you are on the bottom. Great vid by the way, a small break between left over mince pies and lager !!!

My tip would be to start in the margins. It gives you the basics of casting technique with very little punishment and can be as prolific as any other place, sometimes even more so. It’s a tip that helped me big time when I started about 18 months ago, and as you get more confident, you can start exploring feature finding and longer casts. On a lot of commercials, the bigger carp often patrol the edges, meaning you’ll still get the experience of catching a bit of everything, but from a much more comfortable place. My top tip, if you are not catching in these miserable conditions, never, never be tempted to feed in more bait as your swim could just go dead. The fish will feed on that small amount of ground bait you put in when they feel like it and it might take an hour or even two before you get the first bite. Tight lines all and a happy new year.

Top tip: Make sure you always keep a plummet with you! It’s a weight that you can attach to your hook so that when you’re float fishing you can see just how deep the water is and it will allow you to be able to present your bait on the bottom. Extra tip: Use the plummet to check other areas of your swim to find any deeper or shallower areas where fish could be hiding! It will help you understand the water a lot more!

My tip for a beginner is that you should always consider the length of you hooklength when feeder fishing. Longer hooklengths can sometimes help pick out big or shy fish, and shorter hooklengths can be very effective when there are a lot of fish that get onto the feeder quickly.

My no1 tip and new comers i have helped at Makins as i get approached a lot lol is, if your float fishing key is to plumb the depth to where you are fishing by pinching a swan shot on to your hook or buy a plummet. i see so many new comers just chucking it out either well over depth or way to shallow. The bait choices and casting will all come down to practice and watching other experienced anglers, and never be afraid to ask for advice most anglers will happily oblige. Merry Xmas all.

Tip for beginner: To start off buy a 3/4m whip and get used to plumbing, playing and landing fish. Then move on to either a pole or rod and line. It'll help you catch fish without all the tangles of a rod and line and it's great fun too 👍👍

My tip: You'll progress faster if you get advice rather than trying to figure it out yourself as a beginner. Other anglers, tackle shop staff and fishery owners will help you - but if you can't speak to these, or are nervous to then hook yourself up with Des, Lee, Joe from Preston and some of the other youTube anglers. I started again almost from scratch 2 years ago and very quickly found Des' videos. Upside is learnt loads really quickly, and made less mistakes on the bank and when spending money in the tackle shop. Downside is I spent a fortune on Preston gear !!

Fishing for the first time? Three basic rules..1 go with someone who not only knows how to catch fish, but knows the venue you are going to fish, so that they can give you the best chance of having a great day with lots of bites and lots of fish in the net. 2 keep it as simple as you can, it helps you to concentrate on the bites and not faff about with unfamiliar tackle and lots of birds nests. 3 most importantly fish on a nice dry warm day. Most bad first experiences of fishing are due to being cold, wet, biteless, and fishless. The first trips are crucial, get it right and you will fish all your life long. Begginers Tip. When you get to your peg, After setting up the float or pole line always plumb up all areas of your peg in front as far as you intend to fish and to either side which will let you know where your fishing area is either deeper or shallows up.

Best advice for a beginner I could give is to make sure you pick a marker on other side of the lake either a bench peg or a tree for when you are plumbing up and keeping your feeding area accurate and also make sure you enjoy it

My advice for a beginner is to pick a venue that holds a lot of small fish. Fish with maggots that will catch anything that swims, pick one line to fish, feed accurately and plumb the swim so you know where the bottom is and go in the summer when its easier to catch. Tip for the starting feeder angler, start with small amounts of groundbait, small feeders in winter. Let the fish tell you what to do. To positive feeding at the start means you can't take the the feed out of the water. Always feed more when the fish respond.

tip for beginner natural venue Northern Ireland focused: Don't be afraid to feed heavily. If the fish are there you will catch them, and if they aren't but they do arrive, you need something to hold them. Second tip, if you think fish are there but your not getting bites, contrary to what most people tell you, do try a finer hook length, smaller hook to try and get a bite, in some of the really clear water it can and does make a difference. Once you get a bite to can work your way back up to big hooks and thick hook lengths. But I've seen it where a fine hook length switches the fish on, they have been there feeding all the time, just avoiding your rope.

My tip is to take your time choosing your lines to fish. Plumbing up is super important. Dont rush this part. Plumb up all round you and take your time to set your depth to perfection. Skip this step and everything else you do will be wrong. Plumb up right and you are setting a good foundation for the day ahead.

Another tip is just enjoy yourself, it makes fishing so much more fun when you go out to enjoy yourself. My tip for someone new to pole fishing is to start out whith a cheap pole , i started out with a second hand Preston Zyrium, that way i could learn how to use a pole and get used to shipping back and get some pole craft and it didnt matter if i dinked it. My tip for a beginner angler would be to fish a smaller hook on a lighter line just to get bites and learn from your breakages what works and what doen't work for each type of fish and for the stamp you are catching . Slowly work your way up. I learned this as a kid when I asked the man next to me "excuse me Mr. Why are you catching and I'm not". :-( He quickly looked at my line and hook. Tooted , and gave me what I thought was a minute hook and very thin line to replase my grapling hook and rope and low and behold I started to catch. So thank you who ever you were but lesson was learned at a very young age to scale down and balance your tackle.

As someone who has only just started match fishing my tip would be don’t fish too long with the pole. I find fishing shorter at a more manageable length helps me present the bait better and keep feeding much more accurate. I started trying to fish the pole long to replicate what people around me were doing but just destroyed my swim. I have had much more success fishing shorter and neater.

Use the preston pre tied hook lengths gives you all the hooks you need for any kind of fishing . Once you learned how to tie the hooks you need you have the rig sticks to store your hooks .

My tip would be to make sure you have a selection of baits to give the option the get the fish to bite without complicating it to much. i.e. during Winter fishing on Pole i would always have some maggotts, a few casters and Worms with micro pellets. Finally an 18 hook size is a good starting point. Cheers for 2022.
