"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

He killed his campaign when he signed that bill the other day ending permanent alimony. Older Floridian women who now stand to lose everything are banding together and vowing to get revenge, by mobilizing against him in all their numbers. They're scared and they're pissed, to put it mildly. I don't think we need to worry about him ever becoming President now, not with the massive backlash from this group that we've only begun to hear about. Stay tuned for this one.

@@brantleyerikI think the difference with Trump’s rich net worth for the right wing voters who tolerate Trump (for those thinking Biden’s worse) is: at least Trump’s large net worth, inheritance and real estate scams means Trump didn’t begin making his money by being a corrupt politician who already made certain policy decisions that greatly harmed the citizens he affected the lives of before making his first run for President
@CraigMcGuinn
@CraigMcGuinn Жыл бұрын
@@c.m.cordero1772the establishment GOP politicians are worse than Trump for this reason: At least Trump didn’t have to get the money he had made by the time he began his first campaign for President by being a corrupt establishment politician who sold out the working class voters he was supposed to represent to a degree for the best interests of the top 1% of income earners. this is one of two reasons the Trump tax returns leak from 2016 didn’t derail Trump’s campaign. the other reason is Hillary Clinton and the corporate media focusing on the Trump not paying income taxes from 1995-2008 after his casino businesses collapsed part instead of the reason why Trump actually should not have had to pay income taxes from April 1995-April 2008 (despite this meaning the money Donald Trump got from his one-third share of his Dad’s wealth when his Dad died in the fall of 1995 minus the $2 million Donald Trump owed to his brother John Trump as collateral for a previous loan agreement being tax free for Donald) : The reason Donald Trump should not have had to pay income taxes for income made from tax day 1995 to tax day 2008 is because Donald Trump’s 1994 casino business failings meant he lost over $900 million between April 1994-April 1995, making Donald Trump one of the worst businessmen in American history who began their careers post-1900! Even most other businessmen who began their careers rich for their time and could usually only gain large amounts of profits from scams would have been able to keep their own casino business from losing money! It’s why the casino saying “the house always wins” exists. If a person loses $900 million in the one year period between any 2 April income tax days, that person should not have to pay income taxes for 13 years

The DeSantis win was about a uninspiring, weak Democratic candidate rather than anything to do with gerrymandering. What is the case with North Carolina that you referenced? Everything I'm familiar with had to do with gerrymandering to disproportionately skew in favor of increased Republican congressional representation.

The issue with trump is I dont think he walks the walk. He uses all the dog whistles and pretends to he doing all the "right" stuff. However, he's just a (kinda bad) businessman, so it's all just a grift. He's constantly walking a tightrope for his fanbase to find out he isn't actually as crazy as them. He's just dumb and greedy but good at social manipulation.

I can only imagine why anyone would vote for the guy who has taken rights away from citizens. I guess that they want their own rights taken away. I also think that every Senator and Congressmen and women who voted no on the infrastructure bill should get nothing from it! Give it to the states that supported it. Maybe then they would reconsider voting against everything that Democrats propose.

The very essence of Republican success is to get voters to vote against their interests. So a state like Florida, with a sizable population of elderly retired, vote for Republicans who want to drain their Medicare and Social Security. And a sizable Latino population will vote for a candidate who demonizes them as rapists and murderers. Astonishing Masochism unmatched this side of the galaxy.

Kyle, have you discussed DeSantis bill where now Florida can take kids away from their parents only for the suspicion of possibly being exposed to gender affirming care? That applies to anyone who gets accused of this and the parents can face child abuse charges, which now also carry the death penalty. The bill affects families from other States, because FL in the bill gave themselves authority to go over the possible arrangements of child custody from other states. This puts people who are fleeing abusive relationships in danger to lose their kids, even if they find support from court in other States. DeSantis needs to be crushed in a way that he never gets any other position in government, no matter how small. He is down in the polls, but if Trump can’t run, isn’t DeSantis still in second place? He is still a danger to the USA

You're making the classic mistake of thinking that any talking point that Trump rambles on and on about has the capability of being seen as negative in the "minds" of his supporters. Literally anything that he says is "good" to them as long as Trump says it. Whether it's criticizing a POW for getting captured, criticizing gold star parents for not supporting him, clamoring to defund the federal police, etc., it's all positive for him. Literally Trump could say that the FBI should be defunded and his cultists will start chanting three word slogans about getting them dissolved. If you have DeSantis, Pence, Haley, etc. say literally the same exact speech, they'll be disowned as "communist Marxist groomers" or whatever the current maga buzz words of the month are.
