"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

This is right. What man in Texas, where public transportation is scarce and income like him has 1 car. I’m sure it’s a hybrid/crossover mini suv. That’s besides the point. He’s controlling his wife. He probably leaves her at home all the time. He goes to the gym, he goes to work( spout hate ), he sees his friends, and his parents. While she’s at home and can’t do shit without him knowing. Kyle, the car thing... it's a very common thing in abusive and controlling relationships that the abusive partner tries their very best to control their victim. This usually involves invading their privacy, isolating them from friends and family as much as possible, controlling their finances and controlling their movements. Which the car thing is obviously about. And Steven's not "looking for a fight" or "looking for drama." He just wants to control her. He wants to dominate her and put her down because that's how he feels like a man. It's utterly pathetic and textbook.

Being a one-car household in suburban Texas is a massive red flag. We have no public transportation anywhere near houses by design, with a minimum walk time of 30 minutes to the nearest bus or train stop. Leaving your spouse at home with no vehicle, especially during COVID when Uber was severely limited, is extremely isolating as they have virtually no way to leave. In my neighborhood, most families earning 5 figures stretch their budget for 2 cars because it's a necessity. The fact that a millionaire would have one car is insane.

I am 95% sure the thing about telling her to get an uber instead of having a friend pick her up is so he can track her on the uber app, using the track friends and family feature. If a friend comes to get her, she has a form of autonomy. If she gets an uber, she is just going for a walk on a leash. It is the same reason they have one car... because crowder wants to make sure that he stays in control by effectively trapping her in suburbia... and then gaslighting her by claiming she is the one trapping him in suburbia when she wants to take the car.

People get so lost in these categorical “roles” that they forget about the reality and indiscriminate nature of virtue. Just be a good person. Uphold sound values. Forget about “I am man, provider,” and “I am woman, nurturer” and what you have left is what is really there: two human beings co-operating for a (ideally) common goal. Figure out how to make it work according to each of your individual strengths, which may not neatly fit in these traditional categories exactly as they’re supposed to. Read "Why Does he Do That" by Lundy Bancroft. He is a counsellor who has worked with abusive men for decades. Abusive men usually witness their fathers abusing their mothers and unconsciously learn to model the behaviour. I would also say, in SC's case, that his cultural upbringing largely contributed to his attitudes as well in being extra patriarchal compared with mainstream culture. There's an entire chapter in the book about types of male abusers and he sounds like the 'dictator' archetype Bancroft detailed. It's a very informative book but very disturbing.

I grew up with these kinds of men. Hearing him whine about being boxed in without realizing he sounds more like a baby than a grown man pretty much sums up how these men are. Regardless of what men like Crowder claim, these women are not the happiest wives out there, far from it. They're either broken down so much that they've become empty shells, have mental breakdowns in response to abuse and trauma that are then used against them (as Crowder plans to do here), or they punch down on others too (other women, their kids, etc.). Ladies, don't buy into this subservient woman culture, it's a trap that my mother and too many others are victims of. Have a career. Have your own finances. Have a way to escape if necessary. I have a friend that tries to abide by this subservient lifestyle and STILL, she has cash hidden away so that she can escape if necessary. It's not safe. It's not healthy. Be wary. Protect yourself.

Everyone should make a significant other or potential spouse meet with their friends and family first to get the verdict on potential partners and do the best to weed out the bad ones. I feel bad for the wife because SHE CHOSE Steven and willingly dated, married, and had marital relations with him that resulted in her now being 8 months pregnant. Pregnancy is difficult enough, but now she has to deal with the added stress of being a single-mother of twins in the future (once she gives birth). Trying to figure out how she will provide not only for herself, but also for those babies going forward. Ladies make better choices because once you give birth you are officially tied to the guy that impregnated you FOREVER. I have noticed with many men on "The Right," they hate women, but they also know they cannot have a live-in housekeeper, incubator, and (for SOME) punching bag without women. Thus, you get these types of toxic relationships where the women are brainwashed and abused with no recourse to escape. Obviously, Hilary (ironic I know) can because Steven is rich, but for all those women with men that control the purse strings and they are dirt poor those women are TRAPPED.

Abusive men don't value any contribution made by their wife. They don't care about the stress of bearing a child (partly why they oppose abortion rights), and they don't value any of the chores they offload onto the wife, while they earn the family income. Things like cooking, cleaning, looking after the kids, etc, aren't looked at by the abuser as real work.....because they're not the ones doing it.

I have been married for almost 20 years. It’s not a perfect marriage, we have our better and worse moments. But…, but… neither my husband nor I ever spoke to eache other like he did to his wife. Being married aside, but a simple respect for another human being. Even if we had a fight, and sometimes not speak, we would still look out for each other. If my husband ever spoke to me like this, I would not only do everything to record it, I would leave his ass right away. And I would want him to do the same to me. Fight - sure, but clean fight, not repressed anger, passive agressive, „I will f… you up” kind of fight.

Getting off a plane yesterday, I had a "Crowder" style encounter. We are a elderly couple. Hubs had surgery and we were flying home from the heart specialist. They only brought my wheelchair, not his. When I insisted he take mine A man commented on my consideration for my hubs and shared he divorced chips wife of 30 years because she never showed him such consideration. This is straight up Narcissistic abuse. If she's put up with this for years I've no doubt she has problems. Okay if it turns out she has severe depression and anxiety, even if it's not related to Crowder, the WORST thing you can do in that situation is be psychologically abusive and controlling. I've been in that situation myself, it took me to a very very very dark place. So if it turns out she's unstable, that just makes it MORE damning.
