"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

I agree if anything. I want to expand the horizon in history books beyond just a tunneled United States slavery because it just gives the impression the United States only did slavery uniquely. I want people to be informed that slavery existed all with the Earth LONG before the 13 coloines were even founded from Africa to the Middle East, Asia, etc. Mostly because I know people won't do their own research.

@@bisurker I wouldn't say it was more brutal, because it was better for a percentage of black people, who at least could "freely" find there was to a new place and there were pockets of the U.S. where the racial tensions were relatively minimal. i think they would have developed their skills anyway even if they hadn’t been kidnapped, families torn apart and forced to work for rich white plantation owners. if they had been left alone in their own country, allowing them to go about their day to day activities in peace, i’m sure they would have developed the skills needed for their communities. i’m a retired elementary school teacher and i can not imagine having to teach that to my students. one year i was teaching a black history lesson about harriett tubman. i explained to them that she helped to get over 300 people to freedom because they wanted to get away from their mean masters. about that time, my teacher’s assistant stood up and started telling the students that there were good masters who treated their slaves decently. they were never beaten or punished. they made sure they had plenty to eat, clothes, a day off to rest, etc. i stood there in shock. i was speechless. i had never heard anything like that about slavery. as she was saying this stuff, the look on her face and the tone in her voice, showed how passionate she was about what she was saying. after school i asked her why she was saying that. she told me that she was tired of hearing only the bad things about slavery. she then went on a tirade basically repeating herself. when i moved down here, i was told that many people from the deep south tend to still be fighting the civil war when it comes to northerners. she and her family were from the deep south and i was from the north. my principal was the same way. after hearing desantis spew out how beneficial it was to be slaves, i’m sure my assistant would be on board with his thinking.

I recently was commenting somewhere about how slaves were not allowed to learn how to read or write. Someone who apparently learned an alternate history said that is a lie we're taught to believe and that the slaves were very educated and only pretended to not know how to read and write. Because that makes sense. Some maybe, but in that period of history the illiteracy rate was high across the board, but especially among slaves, who were born into slavery and/or sold at a young age and put to work. Not a whole lot of school time there.

@@IResonateWithUhow do you "silence" anyone through a textbook? Kyle is talking about a single line in a Florida textbook that mentions slavery negatively 190 times and in one single instance it mentions skills like metallurgy that benefited freed slaves. Of course the implication is that Kyle would prefer freed slaves to have no skills to feed themselves, in fact he would probably favour the know-nothing party line about returning slaves to their origin countries.

Ron's Asshole self, would then relay each person's worst fear (or whatever torture the individual hated MOST) To the commanding officers of Gitmo.. Then- He'd Watched it where the person who had truly trusted him, could see him SMILING LAUGHING ETC as they're being COMPLETELY stricken by then with the MOST horrifying (again, to themselves!🤢) Assault on them.. Talk about the cruelest extent that one could be able to do.. He's not human. He was actually recognized by a few different guys who'd literally been mistreated by him in that exact scenario. Just go into a middle school and get very specific....example " Tim the slave was taken from his home in Africa spent a month on a slave ship crammed in with three hundred other slaves, he was starved and had to live in the human waste in the slave pens, then when he got out and sold his master taught him how to pick cotton for 14+ hours a day and if he wasn't fast enough they beat, starved and whipped him teaching him to go faster. Then after working for decades and making his owner rich, his body couldn't do it anymore he was finally freed with a valuable skill....too bad he was too old and broken to use it to feed himself. But hey he got that skill."

The argument for Hiroshima and Nagasaki is that a ground war in japan would have mulched 15 million lives. Also, you could argue that those hundreds of thousands of lives saved billions because nukes got used ONCE on a populace and everyone agreed it was so obscenely evil that MAD happened instead of nuclear annihilation of the species. That one is actually extremely morally grey.

I'm glad you brought up the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That is the perfect comparison to how America (and the Western WWII era Allies, because we learn about it from the same perspective in Australia) view what we did as "moral" whereas, we view what enemy nations did as evil. The bombing of those two Japanese cities between 130,000 and 206,000 civilians were killed. Compared to only 20,000 soldiers. In Nagasaki which was the second city to be bombed, when the Allies knew the power of the Atomic bomb, only 150 soldiers were killed compared to between 60,000 and 80,000 civilians. We celebrate President Truman and the pilot of the Hiroshima bombing plane Paul Tibbets for ending the war against the Japanese, yet we rightfully condemn and put on trial for war crimes the Nazi leaders (including commander of the Luftwaffe Hermann Gőring), and sentenced to death for the systemic exterminating of Jewish people and other civilian enemies of the Nazi regime. How was the actions of the Allies, particularly the bombing of Nagasaki which was a targeted bombing of civilians, any better than the Nazi actions which were worthy of putting their leaders on trial and sentencing their leaders to death?
