"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Actually North Koreas official title is the *_Democratic People's Republic of Korea_* often abbreviated as the DPRK. They weren't the only dictatorship to do this during the cold war. East Germany was infamously the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR) or in English the German Democratic Republic (GDR). These are just labels people put on their causes. How many times have you heard a terrorist organisation calling themselves some sort of _"freedom front."_ Its more notable among the Left than the Right. Look at how the left hijacked the word "woke" in recent years. For decades it was used to specifically apply to the *economic plight of African Americans.* Now it means anything the social justice warriors want on the day. The Right don't do it as often but when they are given the opportunity by the Left like they have with "woke" they will scream and rant about it every chance they get.

nope, that is not enough, we want to confiscate the firearms of every law-abiding citizen and take away their god-given rights including in red states. you really thought that you were untouchable because some little target or whatever decided to virtue signal by putting up a little rainbow flag, and because some company decided to make the white character colorful.. spent a decade plus being smug and going around attacking and silencing and crushing and censoring people and smearing them and accusing them of being evil white supremacist deplorable and all of these nasty things and even going up to their houses to vandalize their property and terrorize their families and calling their employer to attempt to get them fired from their jobs and destroy their lives.. well guess what, the silent majority is tired of your little theatrical circus show performances. your attempts to groom and mutilate their children was the last straw. just look at bud light and target. you are now going to experience the biggest backlash and people will be using the fattest and widest brush that you have seen in your life to paint everyone that is even remotely associated with your crap. the gays and colorful people and women and everyone that you claim to worry about are going to have to be on their best behavior and walk on eggshells from now on, because nobody has any patience left. but what do you care since you're white elitist dipshits from san francisco or whatever, you can just get rid of the purple hair and remove the bovine cow ring from your nose and go back to blending in among the rest of us, right? you're not the ones that are going to suffer from this and have their lives being made miserable and actually experience real genuine discrimination and people not giving you the benefit of the doubt.. that will be the people that you claim to care about but that you actually look down upon and infantilize in the most profoundly racist way possible. they're the ones that will be going through a nightmare moving forward. you managed to take the most kind and generous and open-minded and welcoming population on this planet that would have given you the shirt off their backs and that would have even entertained your delusions and used your little pronouns and everything to be nice towards a stranger if you didn't attempt to get all of this stuff by shoving it down people's throats and trying to force it upon them, and you managed to turn those people into no nonsense radicals that will never give you anything ever again or give you the benefit of the doubt for even a split second ever again. because people are tired of your bullshit, and this is what happens when that occurs. you are now going to have a massive over-correction in the other direction, and everyone is going to lose rights. well, good job. you did great setting the country back and wiping away fifty plus years of rights and progress. you managed to take all of those things that people much smarter than the current retarded tick tock millennials had fought for and managed to get decades ago, and you flushed them down the toilet because you have absolutely no limit or concept of when you should stop. so now you are going to end up with nothing at all. no affirmative action, no abortions, laws that crush the groomers, people immediately assuming that women are lying when they claim that something bad happened to them, laws that make it easier to acquire firearms, etc. don't worry though, it's a good life lesson for you. i learned that a long long time ago when my parents were willing to buy me something that was like 100 dollars or whatever but i was stubborn and wanted the thing that was like 120 dollars even though it was the same thing with the same quality and features but just a different look and design, so i said "nuh huh! if you don't get me the 120 dollar one then i don't want anything!" and predictably i ended up empty-handed. the only issue is that usually you learn this at like eight year old, not when you're a grown ass twenty or thirty something year old manchild like the purple-haired leftist marxist antifa black lives matter me too alphabet soup groomer activists currently are. better late than never though, i guess..

That was so insulting how they portrayed Frederick Douglass. William Lloyd Garrison was a radical abolitionist and Christian anarchist arguably. But Douglass didn’t compromise, he worked for radical abolition in the system and without, convinced in using radical libertarian Lysander Spooner’s arguments as to why slavery was Unconstitutional. That’s why he argued a Constitutional legal point against slavery. It spoke to more moderate and traditionalists, but also transformed the very legal framework. Spooner actually wanted the abolition of the Constitution. Douglass would take any available avenues, and supported John Browns crusade.

Racism won't end until we all breed the white out of white people and the black out of black people and end up one nice perfectly even shade of brown, without any differences in eye color and hair color and hair type. But if that ever did occur capitalism would need another thing to divide us with, to keep us distracted, they would find another thing to divide us with so that we don't unite to make the world a better place for the masses. Capitalism always concentrates political power and wealth into the hands of the few and works to divide and distract the masses so they can't change that.

RE the slavery video claiming the founding fathers being against slavery and America leading the way on it: slavery was banned in England in 1772 and the US revolution was at least in part a backlash against it. Essentially, slave owners saw the writing on the wall if they remained part of the British empire, which also banned slavery before the US This isn't too say the British empire was good obviously since its slave trade had facilitated American slavery up to that point. But it does fly in the face of the claim being made

I’m slowly becoming less and less confident in the principle of free speech. I’m starting to believe that our degree of free speech in America doesn’t work as intended in the modern social media era. Highly destructive misinformation has simply become too easy to mass propagate. It’s a huge problem, because as worrying as this is; most people aren’t demonstrating the basic intellectual rigor they need in order to resist the brain rot. I know the “internet brain rot” term is often used lightly but it honestly encapsulates my feelings about the issue. Countless Americans are losing their tether to reality. Increasing numbers are living in a fictional world of their side’s creation. They’re losing, or have already lost all of their true identity. Instead, they become an amalgam of whatever they’re told. They’re losing their ability to even come to their own conclusions because they never exercise their own thought process anymore. They always have some social media figure(s) telling them what to believe. The most dangerous part, our government isn’t immune to this. If anything, they’re more susceptible because of their incentive to grift for their base. This human propensity to listen to a respected social authority has always existed and there’s always been some problems that arise from that instinct, however; the internet and especially social media has made it so bad that I think we may actually be better off accepting the negatives of restricting speech. It crushes me to say this; but I truly think we’ve hit the point that the negatives of free speech absolutism outweigh the positives. This is something that seriously needs to be addressed because it’s on track to create a very ugly future. For the first time in my adult life, I’m truly worried about what may happen our social landscape and thus; our government. Like I said, on track for a very bad future. Genuinely bad.

Fast track to Fascism! The only unobjectionable truth is mathematical in nature, once you start deciding free speech needs to be restricted it will only result in a skewed narrative. Wether that skew is left or right wing, won’t change much besides who is at the top controlling everything. Left wing will result in a 1950s style socialist government that kills its citizens through “good of the people” actions like government farms such as in the Stalin and Mao governments of the past. A right wing skew will lead to a new white nationalist nazi party which will commit atrocities in its own right. It would be naive to think that either side would be better then free and open democracy. Either learn from history or be doomed to repeat the same mistakes

I'm _slightly_ more optimistic than you about the pros and cons of free speech. I think where we've gone wrong is allowing a few companies and entities to monopolize it. And those companies have a definite incentive to drown out our own capacity for self-reflection, making us doubt ourselves by plunging us into a never-ending echo chamber of nonsense and propaganda. Even on the Internet, which should be a temple of free speech, there are just a handful of companies that control more than 90% of what we see on a daily basis. I think this is the main reason for the big push behind banning TikTok. It's too much of a wild card - a place where you can see literally anything and be exposed to ideas you might not otherwise encounter, for better or worse. We need to democratize free speech better, not throw in the towel on it.

Slavery was not just about free labor. That was just a perk. Slavery was about keeping an entire race of people subservient and dependent.

I recently went to Prager U’s channel… on purpose 😮. Unsurprisingly, they were trying to make the case that European colonization of the Americas was not that bad. They said America must remain the “city on the hill” and a more balanced point needs to be presented. Native Americans were just too homogenous of a population to survive the disease brought by explorers and it’s not their fault folks got sick. *Cough cough* no mention of intentionally giving infected blankets to natives to kill them off of course.

If they actually cared about slavery, they would have not made a country in which it’s legal. Hell, they could have even made legal protections for slaves to not be treated as badly if there’s such an issue with making it illegal for southern states. For instance: making it illegal to beat and s**ually assault slaves. But they didn’t. People were legally able to do whatever they wanted to their slaves, even the children. The worst possible thing that could’ve happened to slaves did, and it was completely legal. If they really cared, they would’ve done something, but they did jack shit for the slaves.

Who is “they”? You do know that the Republican Party ended slavery correct? And you know that slavery was 200 years ago?

When I was in grade school in rural Virginia, every teacher always made sure to emphasize how evil John Brown was, without any dissent. I'm sure that wasn't due to any top-down dictation. During High School in Ohio, my History teacher showed us a bunch of WWII Japanese atrocities (which were evil) to then later justify in the lesson why bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki was morally OK. At the end, she polled the entire class (of about 20-25) if they thought nuking Japan was a justified action. Only me and 2 or 3 people said 'No.'

Also, in his exceptional book "The 10 Biggest Civil War Blunders" (2018), historian Edward Bonekemper III in examining the Confederacy's decision to not recruit slaves into its military with the incentive of their freedom being given after time in service, highlighted how Richard S. Ewell, Thomas Hindman, and Patrick R. Cleburne each broached the subject of recruiting African Americans into the military with the caveat that they would be freed. For example, Ewell approached Jefferson C. Davis after the Battle of First Bull Run/Manassas with the proposal to recruit such a brigade of troops, which he was willing to personally command, on the grounds that such a move would cut off one of the Union's potential legs from which it could stand on in its diplomatic overtures to European powers to keep them from recognizing the South. Davis rejected it as impossible, as Bonekemper would point out, in that it would shake the very foundational myth of White Supremacy that slave owners and supporters used to rationalize their so-called "peculiar institution." In 1863 Hindman sent an anonymous letter which received similar criticisms from the Southern population and his best friend Patrick Cleburne would also send the most thoughtful and rational arguments on paper to his superior Joseph E. Johnston, papers that would, through spiteful motives on the part of a colleague, would reach Davis and would be viewed with great contempt and derision and result in Cleburne being denied any chance at promotion even though he was considered one of the South's greatest generals. One such staunch critic of Cleburne's brilliant summation was Robert E. Lee himself, who would only support recruitment of Black troops near the end of the Civil War when any chance of using this source of manpower was already gone.
