My infatuation with philosophy started with Descartes. There's something beautiful and pretty straightforward about the way he indagates: he starts with the subject (the self) and from there he tackles the question of knowledge. It's wonderfully naive by today's standards, but back in the day it was revolutionary and together with Galileo and Hobbes he puts the final nail in the coffin of scholasticism (and to Aristotelian dogma)

@@thotslayer9914 To be fair, his ontological argument is pretty naive even by theological standards
@Shreyaa813 жыл бұрын
@@thotslayer9914 How is it more about teleology? His argument for the existence of God relies more on assuming that God exists in order to prove that God exists, rather than an argument from intelligent design.

@@thotslayer9914 Oh right, I see. No, I'm not convinced of a transcendent, metaphysical being. Honestly, I don't quite know how to label myself. I'm still pretty new to philosophy so I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm metaphysically naturalist

I don't think Descartes is talking about Meditation in the same way a Buddhist means meditation. He's not talking about sitting cross legged and clearing the mind of all it's content. He's talking about using rationality to find axioms (first principles).

"We recognize that separating humanity from nature, from the whole of life, leads to humankind's own destruction ... This striving toward connectedness with the totality of life, with nature itself, a nature into which we are born, this is the deepest meaning and true essence of National Socialist thought." - Ernst Lehmann, 1934

how to embarrass yourself: creating a youtube channel about history, politics and philosophy without a single video dedicated to a female thinker. that is....... audacious, to put it euphemistically. would be interesting to hear how you want to explain, let alone justify that.
@codyvandal28604 жыл бұрын
How about this: It's his channel and he is under no obligation to you or anyone else to feature any particular philosophers or thinkers or to explain his reasons for doing so. He doesnt need to "justify" anything to you or anyone else.
@katharinastahlhofen89644 жыл бұрын
@@codyvandal2860 We're speaking about a public youtube channel that clearly followes an educational approach, so it's definitely not a private matter. Therefore it doesn't seem very reasonable to tell someone it's not their place to voice criticism when public platforms are quite literally supposed to be the site of discussion within a democracy. Besides, this is obviously not about "me" or any other individual, but a question of an accurate depiction of reality in a broader sense. When someone creates a channel about history, politics and philosophy without a single video dedicated to a female or non-white person, then this reveals not only a strong bias towards a male-centered and white-supremacist view of history, it is therefore also a severe deviation from reality.
