Join George and John as they discuss and debate different Philosophical ideas. Today they are continuing with Descartes Meditations on First Philosophy and looking into Meditation III.
Is it possible to prove the existence of God through the Rationalist method? Is it fair to say we have a clear and distinct idea of God, and is this enough to prove His existence. Watch as the two debate.

couldnt you also could also argue that as beings that die/finite beings we can easily understand the opposite of that which is that there might be an undying thing...and that our experience of death is actually what confirms that there is finite and that our experience of at least deductively undying things (rocks, the earth, the universe) so why not a being of the same 'timing' within the world view that we live in.

@puppetmaskerr

It's not that bad. Recently started getting into Phil and descartes is a concise writer. I think the reason this meditation was so long winded was because he was trying to not get his book shelved and banned by the church. His obsequiousness during the start was annoying and he tried to insert a (maybe deliberate) *flawed* yet ostensibly passionate argument of god's existence to buy the church's favour.

I totally get his reasoning but I just don't agree? That we have an idea of God means He exists, seems like a huge leap to me. For starters, whereas Descartes who lived in a Christian society was introduced to the idea of God via culture, what about cultures where there is no God, or at least no infinite God? Well, maybe during the 18th? century most people weren't aware of such cultures. Still, the argument seems flawed.

I believe we are infinite beings because God made us that way, but we live in a fallen world because of sin. Once we pass this lesson-learning life, we will be in our mean-to-be infinite state with God (if we followed him on this world ofc)

8:25 i understand that Descartes didn't have an understanding of evolution or abiogenesis but, taking into consideration that the natural world is all that can be reasonable. I think if you define god into existence then of course God exists but, using the external world as a baseline I see a far more likely explanation for God is the evolution of religion itself.

Facts, it's paradoxical for believers to claim that a) infinite regress is impossible, and b) an infinite being exists. Theodicies from infinite regress essentially read: we cannot have an infinite regress of causation, as things cannot cause themselves, so it must be the case that something can cause itself. Either things can or cannot cause themselves- get a grip and pick one.

Youre presupposing an idea of the infinite in "forever". Its innate. Youre also strawmanning descartes by presupposing that the idea of god is a facticious one like a unicorn, Descartes entire point is that we could not come up with an idea of the infinite through sensory experience alone it cannot be a facticious idea compounded from various finite experiences. Youve then taken the idea of god and compounded it with a unicorn to get "omnipotent unicorn" to try and perform a reductio ad absurdum but you arent actually disproving any of what descartes says.

While I do understand the idea of a god being innate, to me proven by the fact that every (or at least that I can think of) have some form of a god, I disagree with the properties listed being inherent and therefore true. Greek and Roman gods for example, they could be killed, could be hidden from, and all sorts of other stuff PS. I really hate Descartes Also, his idea of only an infinite being being able to give an idea of an infinite being, has he considered that he has that idea because a different finite being taught him? If you don’t teach a child about a god they don’t believe in a god because that idea is not innate
