Overall, Descendants 3 wraps up (maybe?) a wildly-popular franchise that has spanned upwards of 4+ years. Many of the movie’s songs stand out as some of the best of the franchise, and this film’s music composition is top-notch. Similarly, the sets and costumes of Descendants 3 are gorgeous, creating a breathtaking visual display for viewers. Yet there aren’t many new elements to be discovered in this third installment, and I often find myself asking, “Why?” throughout the film’s chaotic twists-and-turns. The movie’s “serious” moments are shrouded under a cloud of blatant disbelief, and the storyline of Descendants 3 creates an odd disconnect between the idea that “it’s good to be bad”. Altogether, while Descendants 3 seems caught in a storytelling rut that its show-stopping musicality can’t even fix, the film provides enough plot twists to keep young viewers entertained, and it successfully completes the story arcs of many of our favorite characters in a way that is, in the end, gratifying.
