MAl became jealous of Evie just looking at her and the other kids down the balcony...Although we discover that it wasn't Evie's fault that Mal wasn't invited to the party but it was actually the Evil Queen's fault that Mal wasn't invited... And all that happened because tha Evil Queen and Maleficent had an argument over who gets to be the leader of the Isle and also over who is the best villain...So when Maleficent won the bet... The Evil Queen was still mad at Maleficent... so she didn't invite neither Maleficent nor Mal...

The prequel book helped me understand why Evie would be so catty to Mal in the first movie, when they're supposed to be like sisters. It's possible that she still feels less than positive about Mal from before Aurodon. And in the second book, it's revealed that she still feels insecure about her friendships with Carlos, Jay, and especially Mal, after Mal and Maddie reunite and reminisce about old pranks. I would be less than forgiving, even if only subconsciously, if I was nearly cursed into a 1,000-year sleep by the girl who would later call herself my friend. I don't know if I would have been able to trust her after that...
