If you ever dive on jaluit atoll my dads Sb2c helldiver is on the sea side of one of those islands. He was the navigator and both him and the pilot were rescued by a PBM Mariner with marine F4U cover. Got to love the corsairs!!

A Co-workers' dad was a PBY pilot in WWII. He rescued several downed pilots.

It's a gull-wing, not a swept-wing... It's one of the defining features of this plane so may as well get the terms right.

Plane is actually pretty good condition after nearly 80 years in salt water. I don't think i will be able to scuba dive but would be bittersweet to find old wreckage from WW2.

My grandfathers cousin was shot down and killed off of rabul on December 19th 1943. A few days prior he was shot down November 28th off of Bougainville. I would really love to go try to find it. I have a hand drawn map of about where it went down by his wing man.

It's really cool and impressive that he found a nice preserved F4U, but I kinda did laugh when he said the F4U's wing is "swept wing". Because its not swept at all. And there are other wartime aircraft that has gull wings like the F4U, the Ju 87 Stuka.

As fascinating as this find may be, it’s unlike there’s any possible way of identifying its origin after being 75 years in salt water. The paint markings and slim production tags are probably corroed particles only.
