Descript Resize or Reframe Videos in a Composition

Descript makes it a little awkward to resize video clips in composition, particularly after you've made edits to the transcript, made lots of cuts and placed other elements on the screen.
In this video, I show you how you can select the clips on the timeline (the script track) in Descript, how to change the size of the video on-screen, how to change the aspect ratio and orientation of an entire composition, and how to modify the placement and framing of a video, in bulk, using the inspector panel, at the same time, making sure that you resize everything, all the video segments, not just the particular chunk you've selected.
I show you how you can reframe a video when you have more than one speaker on-screen and want to swap the placement of the video, depending on the speaker, so that they are showing on the screen at appropriate times.
This is a good use of Descript when you want to take an interview or a video or a podcast episode and reuse it for social media clips, with animated fancy captions, but show the speaker full screen, where the orientation of the video is different from the original episode.

Exactly what I was looking for Christi @Graphicious 😀I'm glad that Descript made it easier to choose full screen by adding the option on the canvas but I had been manually resizing each scene and caption as well 😅 At least I found your video and ended my slow editing of Shorts ❤

Great time-saving suggestion, thank you! I have a small suggestion - I'm having a hard time seeing your cursor in the tutorials. I have to stop, rewind, over and over, zoom in to try and find the little cursor to see what you're clicking on and where on the page it is. wish there was a way for you to highlight your cursor it with a large-ish neon color circle or something :-)

Sorry about that. This is an old video, for the previous version of Descript. I now use the new Descript and the new Camtasia which scales the cursor quite a bit.

I understand the concept but can't seem to select different clips like you did. When I slide to show one guest, it slides for all. How can I select a single clip and adjust? I'm not seeing those black lines around the select when I click on a section in the timeline.

Not at the moment, I'm afraid. Even in the new Storyboard version, you can't flip images or videos yet.

I am having issues with my screen is recording is shoving me in, and i am out of the box on the vertical camera. i can not figure out what i am doing wrong? Can someone help? I record my screen, it looks far enough away, but when i go to edit my clip, you can barely see me outside of my shoulders.

Are you cropping too close? Is it shot in vertical mode?

Is it possible to set preset video settings for a speaker and have it used every time they speak?

Not at the moment, however the Storyboard version has 'Scenes'. You can separate each speaker's dialogue into a scene and then you copy that layout to all the scenes they talk. Auto-speaker switching is gone for the moment in the Storyboard version but it's going to be brought back. Soon I hope.

What about cropping a clip and adding two video to one canvas? Struggling with this

The current 'classic' version of Descript does not allow cropping. If you have the videos as separate files (one for each speaker), you can assemble them in a sequence and resize them. But cropping is only possible in the storyboard version for now ... and so far, even that's weird and buggy, so hopefully it gets better. When I need to crop video, I use a different workflow and I export the video, crop it somewhere else and bring it back in. I have a video on exactly that coming out shortly.
