Extend Pauses Between Overdub Sentences in Descript

Descript creates overdub sentences close together, and by default, you cannot control the pause between them if you require the sentences to be further apart from each other. In this video, I show you how you can add arbitrary gaps between Descript Overdub sentences, and how to adjust their duration manually or automatically (in bulk).
We go over generating overdubs, separating the sentences, changing the pauses between them and then automatically shortening the gaps to the desired duration.
Descript generates a separate 'overdub sequence' for each sentence, so it's easy to target the pauses at the sentence level, rather than at word level.
Of course, if you need to also separate different words inside the sentences, you must convert your overdubs to waveforms, and then you can separate the words too, because Descript then behaves just like with any other piece of audio, as if you had recorded it yourself.

This was an awesome explainer on how to get those natural pauses into my clip. Thank you! Kinda off topic, but any idea on how to get inflections expressed in your generated Overdub? Descript says to use punctuation, but any time I inset an exclamation point or a question mark, I can never get my generated voice to accurately capture the inflection.

Interesting. Definitely a painful work-around, especially with 6 hrs of script. Maybe Descript can integrate an automatic work-around by assigning a 0.1 or 0.2 second pause to some keyboard character or character combination. This way, a user could have, say 30 of those characters for a 3 second pause. (hint, Hint, HINT!) Long-term, implementing the Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) tags would make Overdub an industry leader in realistic speech synthesis with pauses and emotions -- all automatically created by applying audio filters, varying the loudness, and varying the space between words. (hint, Hint, HINT!) (Yes, I know what I am talking about: there are universal changes to speech for aspects like questions and commands, and for emotions.)

I agree with you, things could be made much better if these things were implemented directly in the app, so the users wouldn't have to use workarounds or manually wasting time. If only we could influence their priorities more than simply a 'feature request form' somewhere. I have a long list of requests, some of them sent in as tickets. Nobody knows if/when they will be implemented.

Hey bro this really doesnt work for my ver of descript not sure but mine doesnt look like yours. And im confused should I make a new project with just the sentences I want paused and then drag them into the actual project or should I be able to drag the sentenses in the timeline to create the intial pause to then follow step 2? Just wont let me drag the words in the timeline

This is a video for the old version of Descript - Classic. In the new version - Storyboard - and after they redesigned the Overdub, it is now generating one overdub per paragraph, not per sentence. So if you want to break sentences like shown in this video, press enter and break your text into separate paragraphs. Then it will work.

For your kind of content? Probably not, since it looks repetitive and low value. Using this software would not inherently mean your content is not monetizable though, your content just has to provide KZbin’s definition of “value”. Just make it transformative

Hi Cristi! Do you know if it is possible to export a Descript timeline to use in Camtasia? I've been editing audio in Descript then publishing it to bring into my Camtasia projects as media. Saw the "export timeline" option in Descript, so I'm just curious. Thanks!

The Export Timeline function is only for a few programs - Premiere, Final Cut, etc. - not Camtasia, I'm afraid. It would be nice if they did that. So I'm afraid the only option you have is to export the video itself, if you want to go to Camtasia with it, but you'd be sacrificing quite a lot of quality. My usual workflow is the other way - I record my screen and edit most of what I need in Camtasia, including zooming in, out, etc. , since Camtasia is far more capable at animation at the moment - and then export from Camtasia (which also allows me to use much higher quality and compression) and then finish it off in Descript for captions, maybe sound cleaning, filler word removal, etc. Camtasia has Audiate for some of this, which has somewhat of a timeline integration and back and forth but it's quite clunky and overpriced for what it actually does, I'm afraid.

This is great. Thanks for uploading.🙏 I have a related Q: Introducing the gap you explained was great. But when I playback the text is read too fast. When I adjust the playback speed to 0.8, it sounds about right. However, when I go to export, it does it at the speed of 1, which is too fast. Is there a way to reduce the export speed? Thanks very much.

Changing the playback speed doesn’t affect the export speed, it’s just for you during editing. If you have to speed things up you have to apply clip speed to all clips. If they are overdubs, you needed to convert them to audio first. Then you add clip speed to them. There was a way to apply clip speed in bulk but I think Descript removed that possibility. It cannot be done automatically. You can drag the words apart and it will add gap clips between them.

You can don the same in the new version but now it doesn’t create an Overdub per sentence. It creates one per paragraph. Therefore, if you want to be able to control spacing between sentences like in this video, you have to press enter in your text to put that sentence on its own line. Then it will create one overdub just for that and you can then separate it.

Yes, you can switch to 'Write' mode and type your text freely. You can then overdub that text to turn it into text-to-speech if you want to.

It should work the same way in the new interface but you have to break the text into new paragraphs instead. Now Descript creates one overdub per paragraph, not per sentence like before. So if you still want to separate sentences as shown in this video, break them down in text first onto a new line and let Descript regenerate them. Then it will allow you to separate them. But I agree, time for an updated video on this feature.

With so many updates...I am having lots of issues with Descript. Not transcribing...getting error messages, Spanish NO BUENO, and rendering is taking for ever. Everything was good a couple of weeks ago...but with so many updates...I am beginning to wonder if its worth my money... Come on guys

Sometimes paste fails if it has other things in that copied text, and it doesn't know what to do with it. Try copying shorter chunks.
