Have you heard stories of nomads who lost their way in the desert because they saw an oasis or a lake which ended up being a mirage. This phenomenon is called an inferior mirage. Sand in the desert holds on to heat and warms up the air directly above it. Our brain then mistakenly perceives an inferior mirage of the sky as water on the ground reflecting light. A similar thing happened when this person tried to cycle towards what looked like a lake, but ended up being just wet sand. Which are the other places where you have spotted mirages or illusions?

I couldn’t imagine how infuriating it would be, to be lost, and seeing that after a couple days. Especially, back before illusions were commonly understood. It’s really no surprise why so many religions were inspired out in such places.
