THE NORTH AMERICAN MONSOON
We know the deserts of the American southwest and northwestern Mexico as beautiful, mysterious and arid. But around June to mid September, large scale wind shifts can transport moist tropical air here. This is the North American Monsoon. Arizona and New Mexico receive up to half of their annual rainfall during the summer monsoon.
Afternoon’s often begin with storms developing over the mountains. These cells can be short lived, existing only 30-40 minutes so the window to capture the lightning can be narrow and challenging.
THREE STAGES of THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT
In the cell’s developing stage, updrafts can be explosive. This is a great opportunity to capture the first bolts in clear air. In the mature stage, fantastic displays of lightning flicker alongside curtains of rain and in the dissipating stage the storm collapses on itself in a burst of water and wind. A dying storm’s surging outflow boundary will often help initiate another cell updraft and the cycle is born again. Some of these storms venture down into the valleys. A once arid land can make a magical transition to green.

"Spanish Caravan" written by the Doors / performed by Pecos Hank
"La male'diction de la danse du poulet" Closing music by Pecos Hank

I never thought of that. I usually end up rewatching his videos about 3 times a day (which also just might be my enthusiasm and goal to become a storm chaser) and looking at his content to see if he has posted. If he made a movie I would buy it no matter what. That was an awesome idea, and I look forward to seeing it happen!

The fact that bigger TV studios or something like The Weather Channel hasn't hunted Hank down, blows me away. I wish my grandfather could’ve seen this. He would’ve absolutely enjoyed it. He passed a few months ago due to a sudden onset of lung cancer. Killed our plans for doing some camping and him taking pictures. He loved photography. He once took a trip to Alaska and got a shot of a bear charging him before hopping back on the boat. The sky, the desert, the plants. He enjoyed photographing all of it. I’ve got his equipment but not his talent. He truly would’ve enjoyed these shots. Thank you for these, something to brighten the day.

Living in south central New Mexico, the lightning storms here are absolutely phenomenal, especially seeing the lightning storms generate over the so-called Organ Mountains next to Las Cruces. The monsoon is definitely a beast maker and can definitely generate some of the most beautiful storms in the entire continental US.

Summer and Fall Thunderstorms here in New Mexico are a treat to witness. They happen every so often in the afternoon and just drastically bring down the temperature for the high 90s down to a comfortable mid 70s-60s. Plus one is not like the other. One will piss Hurricane levels of rain, some will drop insane amounts of hail, and one will dazzle you with insane lightning. Some will be terrifying and do serious damage, and some will be distant beauties. Plus the sunsets you get from them are just magic. Adding so much more color to an already colorful sunset. Or adding so much depth to a beautifully vast stary sky at night. It’s just awesome. There is just never a missed opportunity for a perfect shot.

Man, I've been watching your channel for many years now and the footage just keeps getting better, amazing. There's nothing quite like arriving at home from a week of hard work and getting a Pecos Hank notification on friday evening. Beautiful shots combined with beautiful music and chill narration, feels amazing to kick off my weekend with that :D Much love

I also love taking lightning pics. They are so fascinating to me. So powerful and masterful in their intensity. So wild and unfettered.

This brings back fond memories from my childhood, driving on Route 66 to go visit my uncle in Albuquerque. The Snake Pit, Grand Canyon, the lightning, etc... I was scared of lightning as a child, as we seldom saw it in California where I grew up. Moving to Virginia on the coast after getting married cured me of my phobia of lightning, and I learned to appreciate its beauty.

This was late last summer and it even came to El Paso where I live, and entire families were parked along highways, bathing in the temporary, miniature " seas" that formed after all that rain for weeks. Thank Pecos Hank Weather Guy! You really caught the mood of it!
