I believe Jack arranged Jani as his temporary replacement because he had health problems like sepsis to attend to. It was temporary.

At the time Russell was on his death bed in the hospital with a preferred bowl from all the drugs and alcohol he had been consuming since the Station fire. He needed it to sleep at night. He lost tons of strength and muscle while in the hospital. Jamie passed away and the band decided to take the name and move on from Jack without a single phone call.
