Desert Museum Palo Verde is a MUST HAVE (Cercidium 'Desert Museum')

I LOVE THIS TREE! The Desert Museum Palo Verde (Cercidium x 'Desert Museum') is honestly one of my all-time favorites. It's got such incredible characteristics...the trunk is a lime green color and has an amazing branching structure making this tree one of the more unique drought tolerant Southwestern natives. It has a long lasting bloom period from Spring to Summer and can go with many different design styles such as mid-century modern, Southwestern, Mediterranean, and California native. Use it has an accent tree, for shade, or in the parkway/median. It stays fairly small, only getting to about 25 feet tall and wide. It's got incredible low water requirements, AND!...this Palo Verdy is thornless! Please feel free to hit me with any questions or comments about this amazing tree. Always happy to help.

the green trunk of the paloverde actually photosynthesizes, the thin leave structure and the roundness of the of the trunks photosynthesizing reduces the impact of the sun on the tree, helping this tree grow in desert climates naturally, which is also why so much light goes through the tree because of its ability to stay out of the hot sun.

Thanks for the great video, quick question, I just got one of these from Home Depot as a gift, and would like to plant it in my backyard near a sidewall between my house and my neighbor. How far from the wall should it be planted and, when it grows, does it requires much maintenance? I want to keep a good relationship with my neighbors, but I've seen many people use it the same way I intend, and looks gorgeous. Thanks!

These are beautiful trees! I’d recommend to plant at at least 6’ from any wall or structure. This just allows the canopy to branch out and have a nice form. Ideally, it would be more like 10’ but if you have a smaller space you can get away with a little closer. If it’s next to hardscape you will have to blow/sweep off fallen blooms during the summer and give a selective pruning once a year. Other than that, maintenance isn’t bad. Happy planting :)

I ended up purchasing one of these trees and it looks awesome. There has been a lot of growth since planting. Four of the branches have shot up quite quickly compared to the rest of the tree and our thin and beginning to droop over. How do I go about trimming this young tree, without stunting growth? Many videos I have watched were about grooming full grown Palo verdes. Any tips are much appreciated.

Hi! Roots are very non invasive. Still I would not plant it too close to concrete...give it at least 4 to 5’ from surfaces. With that said, I have never seen these lift sidewalks :)

Thank you! Just to clarify, are you asking if the tree will be OK in a grass area? Typically, grass gets watered much more than planter areas, so there’s a chance that the tree would get overwatered being in the middle of a lawn. I would recommend having the tree in a planter area where it does not run the risk of getting overwatered.

Hi Lori! I'd probably go a little further from the path than 3'. You might be able to get away with that if they were single trunk, but the multi's will want to branch out and probably encroach too much on the pathway. However, you can keep them pruned more upright and tight, but ideally, they will want to have at least 7-8' away from hardscape. Hope I didn't burst your bubble...just want to make sure you get the right thing! If the Palo Verde won't work, try the Dodonaea. I do love these trees like you do. Thank you for the advice! I can't change trees now, as I expect delivery very soon. In my current design there's the house, 2' for shrubs, 3' dirt path, and 3 away is the Palo Verde D.M., then 4 1/2' is a fence. So the only thing I can think to do is to move it a little closer to the fence, hoping it won't bother my neighbor, and try to prune the tree to be very upright. Ugh !!! I hope I can make this work. For a beginner, I do know a little bit about how to prune watching many videos and I do enjoy the process. Thank you! It is a beautiful tree. Any other recommendations would be appreciated. The rest of my yard is slightly wider. They will be planted 15' apart. So perhaps I should plant them a little bit closer together so that I would have more room to work with. ???

Ok sweet! Yeah definitely sounds like your on the right track and did your research. I’d try to move the ones closer to the fence if possible. But yeah, totally try to trim them more upright and you’ll be fine. Hope it works for you...I’d love to hear a follow up! :))

Hmmm I haven’t heard of that personally… I would assume they might have said that to help it established, but not too sure. I’ve had my customers trim about six months to a year after planting and they seemed to do fine!

Hey! So it really depends on how the nursery trims them when they are young. In nature, the Palo Verde tends to grow in a multi trunk form, but some folks desire to have them as a single trunk. So often times, nurseries will have nothing available just as an option for the consumer. :)

These have pretty non-invasive roots, and are not known to tap pipes/sewer systems. However, it’s still not recommended to plant them near these systems if it can be avoided.

Palo Verdes are typically propagated from seed. However many nurseries will generally purchase liners or 1 gallon plants from growers and shift them up.

hello, just found your video and I have a few questions about my 5-6 year (plated) old Palo Verde. my tree has only bloomed 2 since planted - the first and second year. I'm familiar with the tree's aesthetic as I live I Palm Springs for some time. I am currently living in Long Beach and am having trouble figuring out my tree's water needs. Currently I water 3 x a week @ 5 mins each watering (I fear this may be too much). Over the years I have noticed that my tree does not have the signature upright branches as a lot of the branches droop downwards and do not have many leaves (and zero blooms). The tree did bloom this year after having it shaped and pruned this past winter, but the blooms are only on the top of the tree. I know this is a lot to address in one comment, I don't intend to overwhelm. I would love get your advice, especially on the watering. thanks much

Hi! Well it definitely sounds like the watering needs to be adjusted first off. Since it’s an established, I’d recommend just one deep watering every 9-12 days. This of course depends on weather, season, soil type etc. As for the blooms, it may be that that tree could need a bit of fertilizer. Get some organic all purpose time release fertilizer and water it in. Hope this helps!

Sure thing! So for deep watering, if you are using a standard garden hose, keep it on a lower flow for maybe an hour. If you have a drip irrigation, 1 GPH (gallons per hour) emitters are often used. For trees, one on each side is desirable. Therefore getting about 2 gallons per hour, run the system for about 5 hours. Keep in mind that other plants may be on the same zone in which case a 5 hour run time would most likely be too long. Hand watering would be fine in this case.

Yes it can typically be kept to maybe 10’ or so. It will definitely need regular pruning for that but can absolutely be done.

They both have awesome attributes. It ultimately depends on the design. The Palo Verde is a staple in Southwestern themed landscapes. Arbutus can go in a Southwestern landscape, but also lends itself to woodland, cottage, or traditional landscapes.

Yellowing can occur sometimes with overwatering. There are other reasons why it may be yellowing but overwatering is the most common. Check for powdery mildew on the underside of the leaf.

Powdery mildew can sometimes cause yellowing of the foliage. In that case, you can treat with neem oil. Several applications over a span of a few weeks should do the trick. But I would say the more common issue would be overwatering. If you want to let me know what the current watering schedule is I’d be happy to advise. Generally, a deep watering once every two weeks is enough for these trees.

Ok got it. Typically lots of water is welcomed right after planting. So the yellowing might be a sign of some kind of planting stress. Perhaps the root ball was disturbed at planting…there’s lots of factors involved. I’d cut back on watering a bit and keep an eye on the foliage. It may defoliate somewhat but my guess is it will recover.

There are no 5 gallon options within a 100 mile radius of where I live, the best price I could find on one was a 15 gallon for $135 and that IS too much for a single tree to be considered "budget" in my opinion. But this seems to be happening across the board with plants, there just aren't as many smaller options available. I used to be able to pick up a flat of 12 lavender plugs for around a buck each, now one plant is anywhere from $10-12

Zones 6 throughout 9 it’s a lie . Mine died here at zone 8 almost 8b after freezing temperatures. Maybe Zone 9 and higher .

It's a nice tree in someone else's yard. So messy with yellow blossoms that keeps dropping in spring & in later drops the green leaves. I'm constantly sweeping & everyday it looks like I did nothing! Too much maintenance for me! If you plant it, don't ever plant near your walkway unless you want to sweep every day! (You'll be tracking the blossoms into your house!)
